Hey TL.

My band has a new song and we'd appreciate your opinion of it.

In my last blog I posted one of our songs and it was quite well received.

Its ok. What software are you using, because the mastering is really bad. It sounds like you are using some kind of eq or compression that is killing the volume whenever the kick comes in. The vocals could also use more treble and high mids, currently they blend in and are quite hard to hear specifically.

We're using Reason for the music and Garageband for the vocals... Hmmmm

Maybe there's too much on the low

Yea it even sounds like theres some side chaining on the kick cutting every other sound. Try to work on the mixing and mastering. I think there is way too much going on in the low / mid frequencies.
The song is ok, I don't really like the synth at 1:20.

That synth is a bit strange I guess. Hmmm. We're trying to decide how we can best improve.

Lol that bass cuts away all the rest indeed. Normally you have to do quite some tricks to get that effect, hehe. Probably some compressor indeed.

I certainly found it interesting, not bad at all! Reminded me of some early TV On The Radio songs. I like it that the kicks are not too obtrusive. I think you should concentrate more on the vocals, let it carry the song more, and it could use some more effects, which could go great with some noisy effected synth transitions. Like what comes in at 4:16, maybe make it more dynamic, let the effects get the vocals closer to the instrumentals, or at least thats how i like it

I'm looking forward to your next song.

i have to agree, i think your vocals are muffled out man. The tone isn't bad or anything, i think it goes with the music, but you should make the vocals louder so we can hear what he's saying over the rest of the music.

its fairly catchy

as for the music vid, i think you should just get a piece of cover art and stick with it. let your no doubt huge number of fans make their own slideshows etc.; i think that letting expressive cover art speak for itself is good enough, and makes the listener/viewer focus on the music rather than the vid.

Yeah, we'll just figure out how to record better.
We do need to raise the volume of the vocals, yeah.

That'll make the videos far easier too so no complaints there.

We'll start recording our next song in the next few weeks and try out a few different things.

Yea nice tune man.

It does, however, sound like it's been mixed in headphones rather than over monitors. Most of the issues here seem to be due to the mix, more than the mastering as such.

Just give yourself a bit more headroom in the mix, so that your not driving your compressor/limiter too hard and getting that 'pumping' effect and see how that affects the overall sound. You'll then be able to have more control over the individual elements of the song.

But yeah, nice tune, nice atmosphere.

I do production and engineering work myself and do some of my work in reason, so I'd be happy to do a mixdown for you if you wanted. Just PM me if you're interested.

Nice to see more musicians here on TL.
