So Im buying a new stereo system for my car, because my speakers arent good at all, and I dont have a CD player. But the CD player isnt really a problem because I have the tape that plugs into my ipod, and now since I put all my music on my Ipod id actualy rather have the tape player. But my speakers are weak and i need some better ones, but i dont know how to go about buying them. Im not really looking for anything fancy, like a screen, bluetooth, or whatever could be added. Anyone got any advice? I wont have any problems setting it up because i got a buddy who works with cars and he said he can do it. I would much prefer to buy them from a store rather than the internet.....so can someone point me in the right direction?

In my opinion it's best to actually to a shop automotive audio specialist for at least some recommendations, if not the whole process. My friend has been installing his new sound system for a long time because he got speakers that weren't compatible with his stereo(some wattage problem I believe), which was brand new, then he found out his new speakers didn't fit in the slots of his old speakers, and after he finally got the proper ones a friend of ours who claimed to know his shit said he could do the wiring and then he fucked up on that. My friend eventually went to an audio shop to get it done professionally and the labour of fixing the mistakes and re-doing it properly was around 100$.
edit: or are you just getting a new stereo and keeping the old speakers? if you can read instructions properly it's not hard to actually swap in a new stereo yourself, but if you are completely upgrading the sound system it can be difficult.

Im upgrading the speakers. So my best bet would be to find an audio shop and they can take a look in my car and tell me what i can get for it? Annnd you said they fixed your friends problem, so does that mean they can also install it for a price? I guess now all i gotta do is find an audio place.... do i have to find a place thats car specific?

You can avoid all those problems Grobyc listed by reading. Your owner's manual will tell you what slot size your speakers are and I have no idea what wattage problem he's referring to. But, none the less, going to somewhere like Best Buy they'll advise you free of charge. So, if you live close to one no harm in doing so. Keep in mind if you get your speakers/system installed there (it is expensive) you get a life time warranty on the work.

Don't spend too much on high end stuff if you are using the tape/ipod adapter, as it degrades the sound to pretty low quality.

mmmmm i dunno if its because my manual is too old (2001 carolla) butttt the slot size speakers are not there. but i guess the people at best buy can tell me what size they are.

there was some incompatibility due to wattage differences between my friends stereo and the speakers he had, so there would always be a static noise in the background. when he paid 100$ to get it fixed that included them installing the new speakers as well. I believe he went to Andre's Audiotronics, which specializes in automotive audio. but yeah, with your owners manual and reading instructions properly it shouldn't really be an issue.

Check out shipsound.com , they have great deals. Do NOT buy anything at Best Buy. Go to an actual care audio store and ask them your questions, then buy your shit online and pay that store to install it.
I just bought 2 sets of audiophile quality 6.5" component sets (which include crossovers + dome tweeters) that retailed for $250 per pair for $100 on shipsound.

Just replace the 4-6 speakers that came with the car and a CD-Deck (headunit) with IPOD inputs, you get what you pay for with the speakers.
You will not lose audio quality due to the tape deck conversion and the new headunit will compliment the new speakers nicely as they push more power than OEM, plus you will have the option to play CDs. It'll be about $200 if your friend installs, and worth every penny
