My cheap gaming computer, which I stupidly bought from best buy has been working fine until recently. Now whenever I do anything mildly stressful like opening chessmaster, my CPU usage in Task manager spikes and my comp freezes up and makes that beep that you get when you turn it on. After a short time it unfreezes but it's getting worrying.
My specs are
OS:WINDOWS 2.5.1.2600 (SP 3) CPU:AMD PHENOM(TM) 9150E QUAD-CORE 1.83 GHz MEMORY (GB):3.249 GPU:NVIDIA GEFORCE 9800 GTX+ DRIVER:NV4_DISP.DLLDESKTOP RESOLUTION:1360X768
What do you think is up? It started after I got SC2 and I'm wondering, could starcraft 2 have deep fried my CPU?
If it fried your CPU, your CPU wouldn't be functioning at the moment :p
How are the temperatures on your CPU?
My CPU is floating around 33-36 degrees C. My GPU is about 49 degrees C.
That seems perfectly normal, even better if you werent idle.
Hmm, okay, what do you think is wrong then?
If I had to take another guess, it could be a hard drive issue. Do you hear any clicks coming from the hard drive when it happens?
Nope, nothing at all. I've got zip in terms of clicks. I had a macbook from school that had what might have been Hard drive failure, and the symptoms were much more severe,
Maybe the heatsink is not seated properly and has moved?
You can't always trust the temperature reported from these programs. You don't know exactly where it is taking the measurements from. So, IMO, it is worth cheaking the heatsink and maybe even worth reapplying thermal past between the heatsink and CPU.
Or it may be a BIOS issue. When I first built my current comp it was rediculously unstable and it was the BIOS at fault. May be worth updating that too.
I didn't build this though, I'd think gateway, being a large scale manufacturer could do a decent job. Keep in mind, I'm approximately as tech skilled as your average four year old. How would I go about doing these things?
I'm no expert in the field, but a good way to start is to download superpi or prime95, or any other stress tests to stress your CPU.
I would suspect your CPU is overheating and this will confirm whether or not your CPU overheats under heavy load.
Best option would be to get technical assistance from trained pros though.
