For me =D
Like anyone else, I have my favorite games. And it just so happens that 2010 hosts new iterations of my favorite franchises or new IPs from my favorite developers, more so then any other year has. And it's not even a question of whether these games are going to end up being good or not -- because I know they are going to be great. No question.
Anyways, my personal 4 big picks:
I.+ Show Spoiler +Final Fantasy XIIII've gamed all my life so it's hard for me to consistently find games that blow my mind. So when I say this is the best game I've ever played, I really mean it. A lot of people's favorite games are always ones from their childhood or some really classic title and mine was too. So you can imagine how special this game had to be for me to put it above all else. This game is just majestic -- not everyone's cup of tea, but I definitely feel like someone at Square knows my personal tastes more then I do.
II.+ Show Spoiler +Starcraft IIYeah, do I really need to say anything? III.+ Show Spoiler + The Last GuardianTeam ICO is responsible for both ICO and Shadow of the Colossus on the PS2, which really are two of the most powerful gaming experiences I've ever had. They send really powerful messages with their brilliant art direction and atmosphere as opposed to loads of dialogue. Greatest action/adventure games ever IMO. Get a PS3 for this if not for anything else.
IV+ Show Spoiler +. Super Street Fighter 4I've only gotten into 2D fighters recently but they captivated me almost immediately. I put nearly 200 hours into SFIV and I still suck but I don't even care. This next iteration looks to be 100x better and is honestly going to compete with the time I can devote to Starcaft II.
And of course, those are only 4 games for me, and wouldn't cut it for the "best" year of gaming.
So, I'm looking forward to trying out a lot of the following titles as well, and I put some on there that other people might be looking at to:
+ Show Spoiler +Already released:
Battlefield Bad Company 2 Mass Effect 2 Bayonetta God of War III S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Call of Pripyat Bioshock 2
Upcoming:
Super Mario Galaxy 2 Metroid: Other M Gran Turismo 5 Final Fantasy XIV Halo Reach CoD 7: ? Civilization 5 Fable 3 PoP:Forgotten Sands MGS: Peace Walker KH:Birth by Sleep Medal of Honor Ghost Recon 4 BlazBlue: Continuum Shift World of Warcraft: Cataclysm Witcher II etc.. (Ok I even surprised myself here, there's actually quite a bit more to list but I'm sure you all know what's out there =D ) And let's not forget the new motion technology for the 360 and PS3 coming this fall (although not sure what to expect, exactly).
Let the good times roll

Got about a total of about 70 hours into BC2 already since its release + beta. I really wish COD and MoH revert back to WW2, CODUO and MoHAA was the best of the series. The infantry combat in original COD was the best during its glory, though not saying Modern Warfare wasnt good.
And the motion technology is a joke, just to hype it up for the casuals. I prefer my gamepad or mouse/keyboard. Metro2033 should be similar to STALKER, if you would like to try it and GT5 should be worth it(Think they were adding NASCAR and WCR in too?)

but I totally agree with you
When people called 2007 the 'best gaming year' I was pissed off (I loved 1998)
But this year just seems to explode with amazing games

SNES and N64 for memorable moments.

Totally agree, especially for the PC. It's gonna be a PC renaissance.
My standouts so far/anticipating greatness:
Mass Effect 2 STALKER: Call of Pripyat Bad Company 2 Starcraft 2 Deus Ex 3 (!!!!!) Syberia 3 Gray Matter Beyond Good and Evil 2

can't possibly imagine any year beating this. Tribes + SC...that alone takes it. Everything else is gravy

FFXIII God of War 3 Starcraft 2 Bioshock 2
Time to finally go pick up a PS3. :D Best year for gaming in a long time IMO.

1998 was great. I'd also throw in Banjo Kazooie, Ocarina of Time, and Pokemon Red and Blue. I was 12 and that may have been the golden year of my gaming!
Additionally, Super Mario Galaxy 2 will be undoubtedly be amazingly good.
|
SC2 FFXIV those are the two i want
|
Nothing beats the NINTENDO SIXTY FOURRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!
Thought SC does come close.

I didn't know about the last guardian.
I just spent an hour watching trailers and reading about it, as well as fantasizing, Fumito Ueda is possibly the most baller game designer ever.
SotC was so much damn fun, I was literally screaming and wildly rocking back and forth according to the way I wanted to climb during every level.
Haven't played Ico yet, I'll try and download it.
I might have to buy a PS3 for The Last Guardian.
|
I am really looking forward to The Last Guardian. Shadow of the Colossus is probably one of the greatest games ever created in terms of single player experience.
I am also looking forward to the official MGS 5 W on the psp.
I will also get a new super desktop computer to play SC2.
|
Man 2007 was the best year (for 360). Halo 3, Mass Effect, Bioshock, Cod4.
|
It's settled, tomorrow I replay Shadow of the Colossus.

I think I have warped the shape of my thumb by playing SF4 so much with my buddies. Such damn intense matches

sorry, 1998 will ever be the best year in gaming

Completely agree with the OP
My copy of sf4 is pushing 500 hours at this point. And it's only that low because I started spending most my ps3 fighter time on marvel vs capcom 2 once it was released.
I'm gonna laugh when sc2 gets pushed back to 2011 just to spite your list though =P

Looooool 1998 best year ever. Rainbow Six Unreal BG Fifa 98 Sc Half life
Oh and World Cup
Since 2000-2001 i think that all the years have been meh at best.

It always intrigued me how people can want to play so many games at once... I guess I'm the simplest person, All I can ever dream of playing is SC and Chess (Not a video game, but I play correspondence). Anyway, good luck with playing all of those
|
1999 would be my pick, though I'm probably biased because System Shock 2 and Planescape: Torment were both released that year. It also saw the birth of some of my all-time favorite PC games, notably HoMM3 and Freespace 2.
Then 2000 came in right after with ridiculously awesome titles like Baldur's Gate 2, The Longest Journey, and Deus Ex. No doubt about it, the late 90s and early 2000s were some of the best years to be a gamer alive.

I don't have any new consoles but the new Metroid and Golden Sun are tempting me to get a Wii and DS.
And holy crap I never realized how awesome '98 was.

Fixed, seeing as 3 of these 4 games didn't live up for the more devoted fans of their predecessors (Halo 3 disappointed the competitive Halo 1/2 crowd, Bioshock was a System Shock rehash with shiny graphics and EZ mode features, and from what I've head, CoD4 was not up to snuff for some CoD 1/2 players).
OP is also missing Alpha Protocol.

single player games take like 10-60 hours to play through
multiplayer sc/chess takes a lifetime to play through

I played Spyro recently and was amazed how good it was. The gameplay was pretty basic but the levels were better than any of the more recent Spyro's and there was some beautiful dark humour that I didn't appreciate until I was older. You don't know how good those games are until you replay them. Also the pokemon games owned.

if some crazy prof invents a tool with which certain parts of your memory can be deleted i'll be the first person to replay half of the games in this thread........
