Today I was walking down the street, when a random guy comes up to me and says "Hi, can you help me? I'm a student from Mongolia and I need to raise money so i'm selling socks". I thought that was kinda interesting, and I did actually need some new socks, so I agreed to buy a pair. He got excited and said "you can get a discount! $10 for 3 pairs!" I said no, I only need 1 pair, and he was like "oh, 1 pair is $3."

I guess they don't teach math in Mongolia

Or maybe you just got tricked into buying a cheap $1 pair of socks for $3 from some guy who's not even from Mongolia and speaks English very well.

That is an interesting discount.

Yes, nice job, except you got the country wrong. This guy is clearly an American trying to hustle money out of you, because we all know only American math can be that bad. As an American, I know first hand. 4/3 people at my school failed math!

Wwell, in this case it's more mere logic than proper math. But I laughed at your reasonement.

If you read carefully he's not actually making fun of Mongolia, just that one particular person, who happens to be from Mongolia.

It's true, the title is a sweeping generalization and I for one am deeply offended. The Mongol Empire was the most racially diverse empire to ever conquer half the known world, and you can be sure if a man improperly calculated a discount when selling socks to Genghis Khan he would not be making a blog on the internet with the implication that his entire people were bad at simple arithmetic.

You guys are getting offended for nothing. If you replaced 'Mongol' with 'American' I know none of you would be offended. It's not like he's saying "all mongols are fucking retarded we should kill them all like the nazis did with the jews!" He's satirical and sarcastic. There's a thread in the pictures section that has a fishing pole with a bucket of chicken as bait and a bunch of black basketball players jumping up to get it, why don't you guys go be emo pussies in that thread too?

Maybe he was just on-the-fly price adjusting. Since the OP was not interested in three pairs for $10, one pair for $3 was a safer sell?

Maybe this guy is actually involved in a statistics research. I heard about this kind of stuff before, around half of the test persons actually fell for this kind of decoy offer. They were told something like 1 piece of gum is 0.13$ but if they buy 14 at once they get them for "only" 2$. A lot of people thought they have made a good deal. The prices have to be more complicated than 3 and 10$ though.

People who get offended by the slightest hint of racism, especially in jokes, should gtfo the internet. You clearly will not last here.

But I really think he hussled you good. I'm pretty sure he realized the math is wrong if he was an international student and all.

Well there was a generalization, "I guess they don't teach math in Mongolia."
Also the title clearly says "lol mongolians" which is pretty much generalizing the entire population.

Just saying, don't defend the fact that you didn't make a generalization, defend why you did it and give good reason. I'm a neutral party.

actually, some supermarkets do that too. I've seen some articles on consumerist where they have a "deal" in which they sell bulk items for more than they would cost individually.
