Hey I wanted to get your guy's take on senses and stimulation's bringing back old memories.
Personally for me, smell/sound is the most memory binding experience. If I hear a song from a specific time in my life, I can almost relive that experience just through that song. Or perhaps when you walk outside and a smell goes through the air that reminds you of another time in life (hopefully not the biggest dump you have ever taken) but maybe a hike you went on? For me the smell outside after rain does this a lot.
I figured I'd ask what sense brings back old memories for you most and why do you think? Thanks for letting me know guys.

There are a few scents that immediately bring up memories... usually of SC, which is weird because the smells are distinct and completely detached from SC. Maybe I just spent too much time in middle school daydreaming of SC while smelling these aromas? XD

Yup, smell is the most memory binding for me. Everytime, certain scents definitely bring up my old childhood memories in Korea.

Music for sure.
I associate music with certain periods of life. For example, hearing "Fly Away" by Lenny Kravitz or "Stellar" by Incubus reminds me of a girl I dated back in May. Hearing anything off of the Donkey Kong Country 2 soundtrack reminds me of me playing the game in my basement as a child. Hearing "I Was Made For You" by Rivers Cuomo reminds me of a girl that has caused a lot of drama right now.
The cool thing about it is as you expose yourself to new music, it's new potential songs that you can associate memories with down the road.

Sometimes music triggers my memory really powerfully
For example, "Shout me Out" by TV on the Radio not only makes me think of San Francisco, but also triggers other memories from when I was spending a lot of time there (emotions, sights, sounds, smells etc)

Every girl gets a song... or a few. Sometimes they get a TV show or a movie. Once in awhile a book.
I spend so much time thinking about my past that I generally don't need a trigger. Just things I've associated with people will make the feeling extra strong, and make me actually miss the person rather than just thinking about them.

I never did the girl->song thing... I love reading notes and looking at pictures I took years ago... its brings me right back into the moment

whenever i hear slide by googoo dolls i remember me and my mom driving through the cornfields to go out of town; good memories.

For me it's feelings...weirdly enough. If I feel a certain type of happiness, I get a rush of all the memories with the exact same feeling. It also comes with an accompanying smell that I can suddenly smell, be it almonds or cut grass or smoke. Always fascinates me (:

There is this smell of some candy which, i still dont know what it is, some sort of fruity taffy stuff that reminds me of the house my grandparents used to live in
I believe i remember learning that smell can be the strongest link to memories because of some connection between the structure responsible for registering smells (not your nose, something deeper inside your head that i cant remember the name of) and your limbic system which has to do with memories.

it's always been words for me, as weird as that is. But of course they have to be in a certain context or tone. Soon as i remember a specific word from a memory it all comes back

it's because the olfactory bulb is closely linked to the hippocampus (memories) and the amygdala (emotions)

Very neat dudes...so from what I'm gathering smell seems to be the most defining memory producer..however sounds we usually hold dear and close to us and can bring back more specific memories.
As for Rekrul, WTF happend last night usually can take him back as far as 12 hours. Very impressive

Definitely music for me, hearing certain things reminds me of playing certain games or of different times in my life etc.
