I got a WRT160N v3 a few weeks ago after deciding to do away with WRT54G v9 (it had some conflict issues with me losing connectivity whenever my sister turns on her comp and stuff). It was perfectly fine until a few days ago.

After I had done the following (not sure if it's related though):
Removed AVG
Installed NOD (another anti-virus software)

I started losing connectivity like MAD. I spent 3 hours trying to get my connection up today morning (almost 14 hours ago) before giving up and going on to do my photoshoot at a cosplay event (hence having to miss today's WL games). I'll upload the photos later if my connection gets more stable.

Anyway, the main problem is that even though it says i'm connected at the taskbar (it says, 'Currently connected to: Home Network - Local and Internet), I couldn't access any sites and it just said that I failed to connect to the DNS or something. I had to do a system restore thrice + go through a lot of procedures on the websites (which I was able to load after refreshing like 30 times in an hour) before it got somewhat stable. Right now it's a bit fine, and the errors are appearing less frequently. Maybe once every 30 minutes to an hour. Is there any way to fix this?

I'm using Vista 64-bit.

Another thing to add is that my sister and my dad (who are connected to the same router, wired) have no problem with this. My sis is using Vista 32-bit, Dad's using XP.

First, don't use Vista - everyone knows that's the shittiest OS ever created.

Now, ask for DNS errors, it has to be a conflict in one of two areas. 1) Your ISP provides you the DNS, so if something is wrong on their end concerning that, there's nothing you can do. However, that brings me to the second area of possible conflict: that same DNS has to be 'routed' throught your router (for lack of better words), and if it's not feeding through correctly, that's a possible reason for your intermittent connection as I understand it. To fix this, I would suggest the update to the lates firmware of your router.

Besides those two things which I would assume are the main issues, you can try some of these things as well:
1) Power cycle your cable modem (or do you have DSL?), at any rate, power cycle the modem.
2) When you power cycle it, you must unplug the router as well. During the power cycling process you should turn your computer off, too.
3) Since you're receiving an intermittent connection, I'm interested to know the "status" of your connectivity, for instance: Go to your local area network, right click, and go to Status. What IP address are you receiving?

It's a network problem, there could be so many things going wrong; not to mention, vista just sucks anyways. However, unable to retrieve a DNS sounds like a problem from your ISP's end but the things I suggested could help as well. There's other things you could do, but I feel like you should try these out for now.

Oh, BUT, I forgot to mention possibly the most important thing:

We need to know if it ACTUALLY is your router. So, what you need to do is do a direct connect (don't use the router) and see if the internet works. If it does, then it IS the router. If it still doesn't work and you have the DNS problem, then it's obviously your ISP.

If I had to guess your DHCP isn't working on the new router, or there's something wrong with your gateway/DNS server setup on your pc.

Find out what the local IP is for your router, then setup your own IP (v4) address as follows:

(if router is 10.0.0.1)

IP: 10.0.0.X (router IP except for X = something between 2-255)
Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
Gateway: 10.0.0.1 (router IP)
DNS: 10.0.0.1 (router IP)

If other people can successfully connect to the internet, then it's most likely a problem on your computer, and this seems like the most obvious cause. If this fixes your internet, but you'd prefer to keep your IP on autodetect, then you'll have to set up a DHCP server on the router.

EDIT: Also, obviously change the IP address of the adapter you're using. If you're connecting through wireless, make the changes there.

Also, the fact that you don't stay disconnected seems weird. Maybe if you are using wireless you get disconnect issues along with bad dhcp?

@ammeL:
I can't upgrade to 7 because of the lack of $$$, or downgrade to XP because there are some stuff I like to keep.

I did power cycling numerous amount of times, but that didn't seem to really help at all. After I did a system restore, my IP is now back to self-implemented IP (because I had to port-forward). Before the system restore, I tried both automatic-DNS/IP and self-implemented ones, both which failed miserably (although the automatic one did seem to work a bit better). I'll do a direct connect if this problem happens again though (so far, connected for two hours and working fine).

Thanks for the lengthy help and advice! Will try to upgrade to 7 ASAP >_>

@Daigomi:
As I mentioned in my above post, I tried connecting with both IP v4 set up personally and automatically set. Both didn't really help.

When I returned home, I did a system restore (and hence, back to personally-set-up IP v4 address), as well as power cycling + re-pluging all the cables. Now it seems to work fine so far (although in the beginning it still happened for like 30 minutes).

Edit: Also, I use a wired connection, not wireless.

kona, I thought this all got fixed, have you tried uninstalling NOD yet... also try setting your DNS to OpenDNS instead of your router. The primary/secondary DNS servers are: 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220 -- I have been using these for a year and they are very reliable

Not sure why you're not getting a DNS from your router (while the rest of your family is), but you can enter in one of your own choice.

Pick one with the shortest TTL (sorry they're all American):

Well not sure if its been mentioned, but I think I had the same problem as you when my mother turns on her computer for some reason. I turned off ipv6 and set up a static ipv4 address, I still get disconnect when she turns it on, but it comes back after a few minutes.

I have Netgear WNR834Bv2 and I often suffer from network problems.

Using XP pro 32 on my desktop and on my girlfriends laptop, my laptop runs windows 7 pro 64. When a laptop is turned on the desktop sometimes loses connection for 5-10 minutes.

My point basically being that this feels like a common problem

Why are you doing system restores? O_O

First thing to do is to plug your computer straight into your modem. If your computer is still screwed in terms of internet, then it's an ISP problem, and you should call them. Otherwise, report back

You mean you're not set to automatically obtaining an IP address/DNS?

That could be problematic, especially if you set it to the IP/DNS of your previous router.

Try changing it back to "automatically obtain IP/DNS" and see if it works.
