Come to channel teamliquid in social and play. See how quickly you can get to 9k. It's a lot of fun getting better with other tl people too. In one week I've gone from 16k to 7p.

Oh don't worry it'll come right back. I was away for a year and it took me a few games to restore myself :D

I happened to be watching your stream when you started playing. I know you had a few haters on your chat but I really enjoyed it! I knew nothing about Go before I watched you play but I learned quite a bit just from your commentary. I think it's good to take a break from Laddering occasionally and Go seems like a slower paced strategic alternative. I definitely wouldn't mind seeing more Go.

Love the stream Darkforce!

nice. dan-level go players impress me more than sc2 pro players tbh, maybe because I couldn't get past the ~12kyu level. xD

do you think there are similarities between the games? maybe some Go knowledge and wisdom could be applied to sc2. I even remember an interview with Flash where it was stated that he started studying Go (and improving very quickly).

found it: http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=129095

Saw this too late

I don't think there are any significant overlaps between go and SC. The only thing that can be similar are the mindset of a competitive player and their studying habits. If you set your mind on improving, finding and eliminating your mistakes,... you'll improve much faster than somebody who only plays for fun.
Improvement speed in the double digit kyus is largely meaningless. Almost anybody should be able to get into weak SDK ranks with the correct studying habits.

I think SC is a lot like GO. They're both games of territory, and TvT is practically real-time Go in terms of overall strategy. I played a few games of Go with a friend when we were both new to it. My friend had been playing Chess for years at a fairly adequate level. I don't play Chess at all. I play SC with some level of understanding, and I found that by apply concepts I'm familiar with from SC, I was able to beat my friend very easily. You would think pattern recognition, reading into the board... skills you build with Chess, would be very important, but in this completely unscientific anecdote, the evidence is that StarCraft has more related skills. SC basically applies to everything though.

One of our ace players in BW, zchen, is a 6-8dan Go player (I'm not entirely sure which number, I think it differs depending on America or Europe--either way, he smashes faces in Go). I believe he's never really played SC before, but once he picked it up he's gotten to C+/B- in a few months. Even though he plays with like...100apm, he just knows what to do and when to do it, and he always knows what his opponent is up to. Game sense? o.o

zchen is 7-8d on KGS. Which is top amateur level. Didn't know he's playing SC.

It's only frustrating if your opponents are too far from your level. Thanks to the internet you can easily find opponents of your level, even when you're a beginner.

Perhaps someone should rejuvenate a Go thread in sports and games. Maybe get some new players into Go and old players back into it. I'll be hiding in a corner till then.

That's really cool but I also think it's very expected. The thing most D-C players struggle with is that they can't think out of the box. They memorise a build order and they get good at micro/macro (not all high APM D-C players are spamming), but they just don't think of the game as a strategy game. They get too focused on microing like the progamers. At most regarding the overall strategy, they know a few basic concepts like 'Toss with one more expansion than Terran is even.' But in terms of choosing where to expand, where to put one's army... I think that is where your friend's Go mastery must have come in handy. It's not just about having an army, or killing your opponents army with yours... It's about putting your army into a favourable position, recognizing key locations on an ever evolving map. This is one thing that doesn't really translate from Chess. Chess is really like the memorise build orders, have good micro etc kind of thing. 8/8 is so small a surface to play on with all your pieces on top of each other, you don't really need the aforementioned skills. 19/19 on the other hand, with the slow build up of stones that gradually becomes massive and complicated, that's very much like a StarCraft map.

I'd be very interested in see some of your friend's BW replays, or Go kifus if you have some
