People used to say to me when I was young that you shouldn't fear High school. It is supposed to be one of the best times you will have in your life (after reading some threads relating to this topic, people tell me you have more fun in college but w/e). Well, I am not finding the fun part of it. In fact, I find high school to be very stressful. I have to juggle so many things all at once (Crazy assignments teachers give you in addition, the extra curricular stuff) and people (including me) in my age group deal with new emotions and feelings they have never felt before in their lives (Ideas and thoughts towards girls, money, values, life itself, etc,). As time in high school goes by, the tasks and commitments I am responsible for grows out of control... Normally I should be able to handle all this but... puberty is one tough cookie. And on top of all this, if you are an Asian like me, you would understand the pressure you would have to deal with from your parents (marks, university...).
I understand that the average age in TL is just above college(?). I want to hear people's stories about their high school lives, the kind of pressure they have faced, their goals and if they have achieved it or not, etc. I hope they will motivate a high school noob like me.
Man, stress thats supposed to be ez is getting to me these days. .___.

Well that's your problem right there.
By the way, highschool assignments are not stressful, at least not in the way college ones are. If you're stressed about them now you're pretty much shit up a creek in uni.

get a gf, girls ur age are probably more mature than u anyhow and will wisen you up pretty quickly
for example, my first gf cheated on me and then dumped me, saying I was her "boy toy".
join debate or Model UN, something where you'll learn be forced to read philosophy, you need to form your worldview.
do sports, or something where people get into a team and do shit with each other, because that's literally what life is about, getting together with your colleagues and doing deals or making the sale
just realize that 99% of the people are just as awkward as you, and you're nothing special, just another insignificant flea on this hairball of a planet

I thought that high school was the WORST time of your life and that university is kickass.
Which is true btw.

I had a horrible time in High School. I made no friends and every day was a depressing bore.

highschool sucks cause you have less control than in college, and most of the people around you dont mostly dont give a f.... about whats going on.. so dont worry so much highschool for me was more stress full than college hang on and try to go with it once you are doing what you really want (in college) it will be better.
it is obious that college is harder but it has a different pace and meaning... some things are "hader" as they take a lot of effort to do but they are much more usefull and gratifiing to do than highshcool shit...
and highschool is not the best time of your life.. college is a million times better.. dispite it is harder.
highschool is just a step for college nothing more.. grades arent THAT hard to get...

I knew someone was going to say "you think that's tough, try university!" and it only took the first reply
I can't say much about the pressures except to try your best. If you break all the tasks down individually it's nothing you can't handle. In social situations the best is to put yourself out them more than you think you can, act confident even if you don't feel it, and pretend nothing bothers you. Basic, generic stuff but maybe it can help.

I went to a High school with a fairly weak academics, so you can take what I say with a grain of salt.
I am currently in university and find university to be much more stressful than high school. I think the main reason for this is because university is so much more difficult than high school.
When compared to my first year of university, I would say that I was more busy in high school. I juggled a full course load and 5+ extra curriculars, easy. This kept me busy most days into the evenings. However, I wasn't as stressed out because although there was a lot to do (which is mostly my fault with all of the extra curriculars), it wasn't crazy difficult.
When compared to my second year of university, I would say I was more busy in university. Full course load + 1 extra curricular. 1 assignment can easily take up the entire day, and into the night, and still be unfinished.
Fortunately, though I am Chinese, my parents never pressured me to be a hardcore student in order to pursue... medicine? However, I still adopt the mindset of, "what I do is never good enough and I should always strive to do better."
Again, this isn't as impressive due to the nature of my school and its students, but I graduated top of my class and am now studying Engineering. Maybe my parents used reverse psychology!
You may have to learn to embrace pressure, or not commit to so many extra-curriculars. Depend on how your life progresses, high school may be the one of the more relaxing times in your life so you should enjoy it!

My best years was 13-16, then high school and everything started to suck

High school was a blast i don't know what you guys are talking about.. You get everything served to you on a plate and if you try at all you can pass into college. If you are somewhat intelligent which I am sure most people posting here are.
Think about it. You live at home rent free, if you have a job it's part time and that money is just for buying food or weed or a new skateboard or whatever else. Your classes are pretty basic and if you study a little every day you can pass no problem. There are hundreds of people to hang out with at your finger tips, tons of hot girls and cool guys to potentially chill with. You get to meet tons of people while having everything paid for, what could be better than that? During the summer you probably work alot but that's all you need to worry about and if you don;t get alot of hours who cares?
When you get to college you have to deal with bills, IMPOSSIBLE classes, what you want to do with your life, super independent girls, extreme douchebags (much worse than highschool douches), finding a place to live, car problems, not dropping out, registering on time, paying your TUITION, doing well, not hating your life, doing dishes, making all your own meals, buying your own food, remembering to pick up extra shisha, running out of engineering paper, turing in that 25 page essay due next monday...
the list goes on and on.
Enjoy highschool it's a fuckin breeze.

My first couple of years in high school kind of sucked because I was in some accelerated classes with kids older than me and when you're already trying to get used to meeting a whole new crowd of people that doesn't help matters. I also was a puny kid who didn't hit his growth spurt till the summer between Freshman/Sophomore year so for that reason I didn't really enjoy any athletic success until my last few years of high school.
But by the time I was an Junior I was participating in Varsity sports (no longer a short, shy little kid), I knew most all the kids in my class pretty well and in general it was a ton of fun. I was a good enough student that I never had to deal with a ton of pressure from my parents about grades (by no means does that mean I got a 4.0 but getting mostly A's wasn't that difficult in high school so I was fine).
In the end once I got past the initial shock of a whole new experience and a ton of new faces it was a big positive. In retrospect, my senior year of high school was probably the most carefree time of my life - almost no responsibilities, school was still easy enough to where I didn't really have to exert myself to get by, and there was plenty of fun to be had. Once college started and it was on me to pay for my own education while I was getting it, as well as juggling other responsibilities it was WAY more stressful, although not necessary any less fun.
I guess it should also be mentioned that I went to an all-guy high school (there was an all-girls HS across the street though ), so a lot of the headaches that could arise during the school day didn't come up, although there were all the benefits after class got out.
|
Eh, high school was stressful at some parts but it always passes.
Just bite the bullet and keep trudging on. No biggie.
(I understand your situation well btw lol)

Dont underestimate the importance of sports/social activities. Oh and dont talk too much (any) starcraft.
|
Kids stress too much about dumb crap. Assignments and workloads will be a constant throughout your life so no point killing yourself over it. The secret to growing up is becoming comfortable in your own skin. Be secure with who you are and you'll naturally gravitate towards people you can get along with / become happy.

high school for me consisted of starcraft, drugs, cigarettes, and alcohol. I slept in class (If I went of course), copied my friends homework, cheated on almost all my tests, and made it to graduation and college with a 2.8 GPA. was easy shit.
College is hard as fuckkkkkkkkkkk
|
My high school was pretty strong in academics so I actually found it pretty challenging. Contrary to what seems to happen in most high schools, it was actually legitimately cool to be smart and high performing. Well, at least among the crowd that took AP classes, which I guess goes without saying.
It was a nice bonus, but really I didn't stress much in high school since I didn't really give a shit. I slept through a ton of classes while acing them. Though I performed well (I ended up transferring over a sixth of the necessary credits for graduation to William and Mary), due to my lackluster attitude I never once posted straight As, which slightly bothered my Asian parents. They loved comparing me to their friends' kids, and I loved continuing to not give a shit and just play video games.
I didn't join any extracurricular activities, and I breezed past my coursework, so outside of gaming I spent my time making music or writing. I started a poetry contest in my school and composed an album of piano/new age/electronica, though I never released it and quit music altogether later in college.
I made a few close friends in high school and still hang out with them now in my last year of college. I honestly made more close friends in high school than in college because I hate going out and I break out in hives whenever I drink alcohol.
If you find yourself distracted by bullshit like girls and careers and sophistries, I'd recommend what pro-gamers call Mind Control (read some interviews). See, you take two Dark Templar, and-
Seriously, just focus on what's in front of you. You have an entire lifetime for everything else.

high school was awesome (although not as fun as college, at least so far). there's no magical answer to getting rid of stress but it essentially comes down to trying your best and acquiring the best possible results. try to find two or three extracurricular activities that you actually enjoy. i know what you mean by parental pressure but as time went on parents (hopefully) learn to trust you.
high school friends are definitely special. nothing like coming back from college and hanging out with buddies from back then
your parents will probably want you to do rigorous academic courseload and heavy extracurricular activities but trust me, every weekend can be a fun one. (maybe except senior first semester, i had too much shit to do)
so yeah, find a group of friends, find shit you like to do, do your best in academics, and you will have a good time
|
I hated high school. If you find high school hard (or stressful), you may or may not find college easier. The one major difference is that you have a lot more time on your hands in college, since you're not in class all the time. Whether or not your assignments are hard depends on the classes you're taking, your teachers, your school, etc, whether it is high school or college.
Personally I found college required a lot more thinking and less memorization, but that's probably due to my major than anything else.
I know when I was in high school my mom put a ton of pressure on me to do well, so when I got an A- it was like the end of the world to me... and she just kind of shrugged her shoulders hahaha. First year of college, she stopped caring as much, because she knew at that point I was doing my best. My gpa dropped from high school to college, but it wasn't a huge deal really.
|
My advice to you would to soak up your experiences because you only go to high school once. College on the other hand is different, people go to college when they are young, middle aged, or even older. Just try to have as much fun as you can in high school because once it ends, its over and no going back.
|
High school sucked. It was full of ambitious assholes. College was slightly more fun. The end.
|
Ah, gotta love the influence of perspective. You will look back on this and laugh one day.
|
in college you have much more freedom than high school but sometimes I find it kind of stressful to make decisions as there are many things to think about, planning your courses so you don't screw up anything and still have a good social life even though I don't really socialize much lol and also time for extracurricular activities,...
|
i somewhat understand where you are coming from (assuming you go to an advanced high school) hell i have 12 pages in (separate) papers due next monday and a few other annoying things to do like exams in 2 weeks to study for...not really that hard but annoying as hell
|
high school was jokes but i'm liking the freedom of university.
|
I question the quality of life of someone who says high school was the best time of their life.
|
High school was fucking fun. Think about it. When else will you be able to screw round with your mates all day long, have all expenses paid and have a relatively easy workload? If you think the workload is tough then either: a) your more suited to a trade. b) you just haven't learnt how to study well. c) give a shit way too much.
|
High school was a joke, there are so many students that just easily pass the regents or exams here with 90s when they rarely attend class. All you needed to know were the basics, high school education is like a total robot, its strictly to the textbooks. On the other hand.... College you actually have to do work and STUDY, yes STUDY I have never tried such a thing. As in self-isolated studying.
And the stereotypical Asian parents stuff did apply for me but after awhile they sorta gave-in, well that was only during my last year of high school where I cut class a lot.
edit: Having plenty of your elementary school friends go to the same high school and classes is the best :D
|
Because you'll get so many different responses (high school was easy/awesome, stressful/depressing/boring), you won't gain any reliable idea of what your future as a high school student will be like. Although it may be nice to read about other peoples' experiences and take their advice into consideration, your experience as a high school student and later on as a university student will depend on too many factors for someone else to tell you accurately what to expect. One really lame-sounding but true thing to remember is that although your circumstances may be completely different from or very similar to those of others, happiness mostly comes from within.
|
lol High School SUCKS. Got it right now at a vocational high school nonetheless, where i have information technology every other week. Picked it hoping it would rock, turns out my teachers a dick, but the juniors in there are pretty cool.
|
never felt much pressure because I didn't give two shits about my grades. Until now, 12th grade, kinda panic mode set on with the realization of my future. Though honestly, the only thing fundamentally different from hs and my experience with life in general was that I was more emotionally erratic. Donno why, maybe its a thing that runs in my family- but I often get extremely depressed, then I feel really confident and energized, laughy. Back to normal, suddenly angry, etc. Mom is pretty emotionally erratic as well and sees a therapist. Who the hell knows, but I honestly felt no extreme difference between hs life and before, outside of that.
|
wait what high school was soooo chill
since you're asian and talking about marks and posting on a starcraft forum i'm going to assume you're sufficiently intelligent enough to just coast through high school's bs easy and/or totally useless assignments and maintain a good average with minimal effort
in which case, you can safely do absolutely jack all up to grade 10, work in gr11 (take APs so you can slack more in gr12) and then woo school is tha shit in gr12, one of the better times of my life
edit: the work in gr11 part assumes you're in honours shit and thus are completing gr12 reqs early
that way in grade 12 your course schedule is like spare spare film studies lunch go home lolololol
of course if your asian parents remain uptight and, well, asian all the way through HS and you have no way of convincing them otherwise then you probably need to work harder than that to get into ivy league or w/e
edit 2: oh yea and i went to a very strong academics private school and i'm like barely above average in terms of intellect but i got into uni with a 97 avg while slacking off 98% of the time
|
high school is so fun man no worries just parties on weekends and mad luls with friends. funny teachers, dickin off haha thinkin of highschool just makes me laugh.
uni is fun and all but, you have to work way more, grades are more important, costs money, gotta cook meals... shit hs was easy. not sayin this is hard but haaaa man quit stressin out and enjoy hs, don't worry so much just a waste of mental energy.
|
It seems like there's a whole lot of work in high school. In reality, you just have to stop wasting your time screwing around, and it really is *no* issue. If you are determined enough, you should be able to land a 4.0 no problem. But keep in mind, it's not going to come without effort, unless you're one of those people... i.e. I'm saying, manage your time, and it will be just fine. Not necessarily easy, but you will be able to handle it without stressing yourself out.
|
High school years are the prime growing years of many people. You look at who you are coming out compared to going in and you see a world of difference. I highly enjoyed those four years and the person they turned me into.
I went to a private high school with one of the most competitive marching bands in the country. I am not naturally gifted with academics and find learning to be hard. I graduated with a 3.8 on a weighted grading scale, so I'm not an idiot, but it was stressful getting there. Persistent assignments were daily tasks. My senior year I passed my limit and decided nightly which classes I would do well in the next day and which classes would get the short end of the study stick. I couldn't afford to attend this school, so I worked part time as a janitor during breaks. Grades and my huge involvements in band made life very stressful at times.
At the same time, I made some true friends that I still see five years later (graduated in '05). Despite my better efforts I didn't date anyone until college, but that came at just the right itme in my life too. Friends and extracurriculars help kill the stress. Lower maturity causes a lot of stupid drama, but with the right group of friends it is manageable.I'm sorry your parents are giving you a lot of extra pressure. Just as long as you are studying to the best of your abilities you have nothing to worry about.

Yea you are doing high school wrong, don't do any work and start smoking weed and drinking.
I did the first but not the latter two unfortunately, would have made high school awesome.

Seriously I'm taking AP Physics AP CompSci AP English Lang and Comp and with all my other classes it's a fucking nightmare... every week I'll probably have 2-3 days where I get less than 4 hours of sleep.
Yes, my school is really hardcore academically and it doesn't help that our student-body is like 53.5% Asian. The average GPA among all of my friends is around 4.3 weighted and most of my friends have gotten 2300+ on the SAT (40 points short of that myself, retaking on the 23rd of this month D: )
The problem is I wish I could attend a high school that isn't as hardcore and has lower standards for giving out As...
High school sucks

This is so funny about high school to me. I went to my (college) orientation, and saw a poster somewhere about the average gpa of the college's incoming students being like 4.2. Yet I never really felt like I was around a lot of smart people up to the day I graduated. So meaningless.........

Man, high school was pretty ezpz for me. I slept during class, didn't do homework, and played poker with buddies at night. Managed like 96% average too, and multiple math/physics awards. But my school was lax as fuck, and my parents didn't really give a shit cause they didn't really expect me to do that well until I did well, and then they just rolled with it. I go to a pretty academically demanding high school and am entering my final year this year. Year 8 and 9 were kind of awkward, but once I made some good mates in the end of year 9 and start of year 10 and 11 high school is awesommeeee. I've found the one most critical thing is STOP PROCRASTINATION and everything is super easy. However nobody ever does, so just keep a cool head and you do have time to do everything, it's just how much procrastination you do that decides when you go to sleep :D
Man TL has fucked me up hardcore with procrastination in high school and probably will this year too lol, but I will try to resist

I liked high school, but then again I was a cool kid.

Perhaps I could give you some insight from a familiar source, I'm also living in Canada, but probably unlike you I'm doing my last year of high school. I certainly don't think the last 5 years have been the best of my life, in fact, I hope not!
If anything, I would suggest trying to keep everything in perspective. It can be easy to get caught up in the seemingly endless assignments, extra curricular activities and the expectations of others, but taking a step back and focusing on whats important can really help. Organizing your life is really helpful. You know those 5 dollar agendas the school supplies for each student? They have a purpose. Truly organizing your life really does help. Juggling all the things that are important to you is just part of life. I play drums in 3 different bands and sing in one other, am learning guitar, play video games often, and draw. It's part of growing up! Just focus on one thing at a time, and everything usually falls into place.
Also party. Partying helps. I discovered partying in tenth grade, and high school suddenly seemed a lot easier. Getting drunk with friends and hamhandedly flirting with girls way out of your league really does take a lot of the pressure off. If you can avoid a hangover, you'll feel great for the next few days, and (in my experience) generally be much more productive. If your parents wont let you go to parties, just try to find a good group of guys who live near by who you can hang out with. Human contact really helps. Like a lot.

Okay, well, high school is not a breeze, by any means. It is meant to teach you more than just academics. If you don't understand what I mean right now, you will in a few years.
College/University is the same. Sure, you get an education, but what you learn outside of class is far more important than what you learn in class.
I dropped out of high school for a year. I went back, and ended up doing lots of volunteering, playing Football and Rugby, I was the undisputed leader of the chess club, and I still found time to go and hit the bong once or twice a day, among other things. High School wasn't stressful for me, because I realized how dumb it was getting stressed over that kind of thing.
Think about it this way - what is stressing you? If you looked back it a year from now, would you still be stressing over it? Then why the fuck are you stressing over it now?
It's not like someone's life is in danger, is it? So don't stress it. I had a huge change in mind set when I dropped out.
Now, I'm in University studying to become an Engineer. I've been getting decent grades, yet still finding time to do the things I enjoy. Now I have to deal with other types of stress. (Engineers might get this, everyone else will think I'm nuts).
|
The average IB score of my highschool was above 40 points, leading a lot of people to stress. In Asia, people are ingrained with the idea that high grades will somehow give you a good life, and thus people stress over exams that really won't matter that much.
I never felt too pressured, knowing that so long as I could get into a decent University, the exact figure of my grades wouldn't matter. You just miss out on too much if you focus your life around the academics during high school.
|
I'm finding college easier than high school. I was a maniac in high school, though.

Highschool sucked, man. I did fuck all up until grade 12 and realized I didn't want to flip burgers my whole life, so I tried hard and got a good GPA and am now in college, transferring to prestigous Uni soon.
|
I wish I had thought to ask questions like this when i was in HS. Man HS sucked, I went in with high social and academic goals, just for the sake of it. It resulted in me just feeling like complete crap everyday because i wanted what i didn't have. I looked at marks as the ultimate goal and so I overlooked the content of the classes!
My advice would be to find ways to enjoy whats there for you, instead of wishing to enjoy other things you know? My biggest mistake was that i wanted the result and not the journey, so more thought went into the "what ifs" of marks than into seeing how applicable and cool some of the shit they will teach you is! For instance trying to apply certain things you learn to starcraft yo! Like the perseverence of the protagonists in an English class's novel, how they went about it, how can you use their method to benefit u in star? Use math and shit to figure out different economic theories, be interested in war generals and stuff.
A lot of highschool girls are like, pretty faggy from what i've seen too so like i dunno if its even worth that much thought. Substance abuse... yeah man its unbelievable how helpful an alternate mindset can be, things look different from every perspective.

Highschool is like the retarded runty downs syndrome little brother of university. Don't take it too seriously and you'll be fine.
Oh, don't take university too seriously either. It's not worth it unless you're shooting for med school.

Highschool sucked, man. I did fuck all up until grade 12 and realized I didn't want to flip burgers my whole life, so I tried hard and got a good GPA and am now in college, transferring to prestigous Uni soon. High school was great. I fucked around all throughout high school, even flipping burgers, and still got a good GPA. Now I'm at a prestigious uni.

Chinese people are cool. Our parents are just mean. They give us no freedom, and we're like slaves for life. =( They're so mean. It's unfair. I can't believe my asian parents. All they want me to do is study study study study unfairly. It's UNFAIR.
