~$400-$450 per person for rent in a shithole with three housemates. This is from city to city, but in Kingston it's not possible to get nice student housing. ~$25 for phone, cable and internet <$5 for water Power fluctuated between $5 and $100 as we had electric heating. We split food between three housemates. You will eat better if you share food but of course it introduces more problems, but I would advise you to try if you can. I almost never ate out in university actually now that I think about it.

Anyway, you're not gonna know unless you do it yourself. I suggest the newspaper for local housing.

Right now I'm paying $540 with everything included and historically I've spent approx. $200-250 per month on food.

10 of us in a really nice 8 bedroom house pay $4400 a month (I pay $367 because I'm one of the ones sharing), electric not included which runs us another $100 a month or so. It's a better value than some places that are closer to campus - we're about 10 minutes by bike - but the distance isn't generally a problem. We got a small business internet plan from Comcast which costs us $10 each a month but lets us draw 3-4 Mb/s when we're not all downloading something. I don't keep track of my food expenses as well. I generally spend ~$150 at the grocery store each month and probably another $60 eating out / month. I don't buy myself alcohol other than for parties so I save money there. I est fairly well though; the occasional mac&cheese or McDouble, but I don't skimp when it comes to the food budget. I agree with Chill about community meals, especially if multiple people can cook. Cooking generally results in cheaper, tastier meals, but can be a hassle when you've just gotten home from a long day of classes. If you and your roommates/housemates can take turns cooking, that's probably ideal.

$250 a month + $50ish for utilities Prefer cooking to eating out, usually cook for 2-3 days so I don't have to cook everyday. No cable. Heating is available, but also have electric heating unit. (split gas 2 ways and electricity 5 ways so have to pay less if I use the electric heater) Love my walk in closet, room is spacious, kitchen have a hatred of it. Food $150ish per month usually absolute max depending on what I eat. $9 for internet split 4 ways (decent speed run torrents for time to time lol)

I spend easily $50 a week on food and I live on campus in a dorm. Late night pizza/sandwich deliveries, Sheetz food, McDonalds, iHop, etc... shit gets expensive.

In TN, rent is usually around $500-800/month for 2/3 Bedroom place. If you split it with roomates, that's about $200-300/month each. In NY, you'd be pretty lucky to get a single bedroom for under $1000, unless it was roach/rat infested and asbestos-filled. Utilities, is highly dependent on where you are from. In NY, my dad pays about $500/month on water/electricity. In TN, I pay about $80 total. Split between roomates, this is actually not bad, so long as you're somewhat conservative. In TN, can get away with $100 on groceries per month. This is, of course, the most basic of groceries, but the good thing is it's pretty healthy. I still eat out whenever I want, so I usually spend another $300+ on food. But I'm just saying, if you're pretty frugal, you can get away with $100/month for groceries in TN. In NY, that wouldn't last a week. In most places in the US, cable companies offer a $99 triple-play package including phone, internet, and tv. You can get away with less if you look around and willing to negotiate. I subscribed to Comcast $99 triple-play for a couple of months, and then called to "cancel" because I didn't use the phone service and Comcast doesn't have cheap prices for internet alone. The lady offered tv and internet for only $40/month. You also need to look into traveling to and from school. For example, if you have to drive 10 miles to school, and another 10 miles back, that's about 1 gallon of gas per day. This can add up to significant costs. It gets even worse, depending on your schedule. If you have an 8am class and 2pm class, do you want to sit around waiting for hours for your next class or go home? I drive a Honda Accord, which obviously sips gas, but I used to still drive in excess of 2000 miles per month, just because of my crazy class and work schedule.
