Hey so I just got a PS3 for Christmas, and I was wondering what games I should get. I've never owned a Playstation (1,2,or 3), but I've played some of the Final Fantasy series on an emulator and enjoyed them. Does anyone have any suggestions for good RPG's on the PS3 or PS2?

Depends, do you like strategy (grid based), RPG titles too?

If so, get Disgaea 3. Story line, in this game (I loved the first Disgaea), I can do without, but it has a decent brand of humor to it. There's a lot of craziness going on in the game, with the 9999 level cap, geocubes, team attacks and all. If you've enjoyed games like Final Fantasy Tactics, or even Fire Emblem to an extent, you should like Disgaea.

I just got a PS3 myself, so I've only played a few games, but a must have is definitely Valkyria Chronicles. Seriously, the game is great, and you can get it new for $20.

Also, Final Fantasy XIII is due early next year. It looks amazing, of course.

Do you have a good computer? Most of the big recent western RPGs (Dragon Age:Origins, Fallout 3, etc.) are better played on PC, but there are some good console Japanese RPGs.

-Tales of Vesperia

A very fun game, I played it on the Xbox360, but apparently the PS3 version is adding a whole bunch of new stuff, I'm jealous.

-Valkyria Chronicles

Everyone I've talked to who has played it has loved it. The only complaint I've heard is that the story is cheesy...but hey, it's a Japanese RPG, the stories are always cheesy.

Some other titles I've heard good things about:
Demon Souls
Disgaea 3

Fallout 3 and Oblivion have a ton of PC-only mods, I wouldn't get them for PS3 unless your computer is really bad.

Valkyria Chronicles definitely. Demon Souls if you enjoy somewhat challenging and unforgiving action-platformers.

On PS2 games, three games I would recommend are Tales of the Abyss, Suikoden V, and Star Ocean: Till the End of Time. SMT (Shin Megami Tensei) games are pretty good, but I find them rather grind-heavy. Didn't stop me from spending dozens of hours on Persona 4 though.

As others have cited, many well known PS3 games are better and can be modded on the PC. Excellent PS3 exclusives are limited.

I'm looking forward to playing Tales of Vesperia, but currently only a Japanese one is out for the PS3, and I'm not hardcore enough to pay for imports. FFXIII also looks very nice but the English one is due for March next year.

Why PS3? Just grab ZSNES and a Chrono Trigger ROM and play away!

I guess Fallout 3 is a must, but I don't know what it's like on PS3

Borderlands and fallout 3 weren't that great imo. FFXIII is coming in March i believe. FFX was badass! If anyone here likes rpg's and hasn't played Xenogears(PS1) then id recommend you go out and play it soon. But i don't think new PS3 can run PS1 or PS2 games... what a bummer huh...

Persona 3 and 4 on ps2 are really great under appreciated rpgs that do a lot of things differently than standard rpgs.

Oh, I had totally missed the part about you getting a PS2 as well (unless you got one of the few BC PS3s), but yeah, if you have one too, get Persona 4 and 3 for sure. Play 3 first, because if you're like me, if you play 4 first, you'll find it a bit hard going back and playing 3. Get Disgaea 1, for cheaper than 3, and if you lose a ton of hours into it, pick up the other 2.

I don't have a PS3 (have Xbox360), but most of the current crop of RPGs have not been that good. The only real standout is Valkyria Chronicles.

PS2 is a whole different story, and it has a huge game library including many RPGs of course. Rather than just name games I'll describe some characteristics of each in case you have some preference as to the type of RPG you want to play.

Looking for:
  • Grandiose plot-based RPG with lots of story sequences: Xenosaga series
  • Dungeon crawler mixed with heavy dose of social interaction: Persona 3, 4
  • Colorful anime-styled fantasy action RPG: "Tales of" series (e.g. Tales of Vesperia, which is the most recent installment IIRC)
  • Challenging, deep action RPG with not many other good traits: Star Ocean 3
  • Fun action RPG with about 175 unique recruitable characters (all usable in battle): Radiata Stories
  • Well-rounded turn-based RPG with tactical battles and dungeon exploration, but not long: Breath of Fire: Dragon Quarter
  • Hardcore turn-based action RPG with precise combo string timing: Valkyrie Profile 2: Silmeria

Fallout 3 was just a dull game. I couldn't play it if you payed me too.

Valkyria Chronicles and Demon Souls are the top ones right now from what I hear.

RPGs this gen have been sparse and few have been very impressive. It's been all about shooters and cover systems.

I'm playing through Dragon Age right now and it's alright. However, I find it hard to give a shit about any of the characters let a lone my own (considering all I am is just a puppet who says the lines the game presents me with).

Waiting on FFXIII, hoping to be blown away. I recommend The Witcher if you have a good PC though.

List of PS2 RPGs that people enjoyed - I'll leave a comment if I actually played it:

Dark Cloud - Level 5
Dark Chronicle - Level 5
Dragon Quest VIII - Level 5 (Really an enjoyable experience.. the art is quite different from most RPGs but somehow I made myself play this when I couldn't stomach Wind Waker - I enjoyed it)
Rogue Galaxy - Level 5

Monster Hunter - Capcom

Shadow Hearts/Covenant - Sacnoth

Deus Ex - Ion Storm (One of the best games of all time, albeit I played on the PC)

Kingdom Hearts/KH2 - Square (Really fun - probably horribly dated and hard to play these days)
FFX/FFX-2 - Square (FFX is actually a great game, but you have to stomach a constant nausea for the dialogue between the women main characters as the series goes along)

Suikoden III/IV/V - Konami (Quite good, Suikoden is a series you really need to play.. not certain which I would pick, though.)

Xenosaga/II - Monolith (Entertaining scenes - too many, too long.. eventually bored and quit)

Arc the Lad - Cattle Call

Disgaea - Nippon Ichi (Can't stand the art style and system in this game.. its a love/hate thing)
La Pucelle - Nippon Ichi
Phantom Brave - Nippon Ichi

Shin Megami Tensei (I-IV) - Atlus (I played the latest one and some of three, I imagine if I had played these when they came out I'd have enjoyed them a lot more. They're cute and different.. I'd recommend giving one of these a shot at least... get 4).

Star Ocean: Till the End of Time - Tri Ace (Fun games when cliched stories and endless characters, sometimes hard to dive into but always a strong series)
Radiata Stories - Tri Ace

******************************

Most of the RPGs I enjoyed were on the PS1 and SNES to be honest. I didn't play too many that I loved on the PS2.

If you are interested -

FF4,5,6,7,9,Tactics
Lunar,Silver Star Story, 2, Eternal Blue
Suikoden II
Chrono Trigger, Cross (If you haven't played Chrono Trigger.. kill yourself)
Grandia, II
Lufia, II
Illusion of Gaia
Legend of Dragoon
LTTP
Star Ocean, II
Xenogears
Breathe of Fire, II, III
Secret of Mana
Lost Vikings

Other consoles:
Shining Force Series (Probably my favorite games, or close to it)
Fire Emblems
Skies of Arcadia
Pokemons (yes, lol good rpgs)
Zeldas
Marios
Blizzard Games

Never give up on something that you can't go a day without thinking about.

Wait just to clarify are most PS2 games backwards compatible on the PS3? The PS3 that I got for Christmas is currently still in the mail and should arrive in 2 days, so I was going to go out and purchase some games before it arrives. Thanks everyone for all the suggestions! The last real console I owned was an SNES and I loved Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy 3. My computer doesn't have the specs to run modern RPGS really well like fallout3, so I'm anxious to try some new RPGs out on the PS3.

Released:
Demon Souls (Holy shit, it has a good learning curve but once you get into it its awesome)
Valkyria Chronicles (Fun chess-like turn-based battles)
Eternal Sonata (Maybe)
Enchanted Arms (Ehh)

Near Future Releases:
FF13 (Maybe)
White Knight Chronicles (Online fun)
Tales of Vesperia

Personally I would rather get Fallout 3 and Dragon Age for PC instead.

Assuming you didn't get the original 60 gig PS3 -- no, you cannot play any PS2 games on your PS3.

Only if it was the original PS3 phat, you probably got the slim model. Which backwards compatibility is phased out.

It's somewhat of a pity that Valkyria Chronicles and Demon Souls are the only viable recommendations for good, English, PS3-exclusive RPGs. They are definitely good though. I love how half this thread is about PS2 games (which you likely won't be able to play) or other older classics.

If you're interested in PS2 titles you might want to look into PS2 emulation, which is fairly mature right now. If your PC can run games like Fallout 3 or Dragon Age well, it can probably run many PS2 games.

Fuck yeah.
It's the perfect cross genre game and you should definitely get this game, doesn't matter if you played Metal Gear, Metal Gear 2, Metal Gear Solid, Metal Gear Solid: Twin Snakes, or Metal Gear: Naked Snake.

It wasn't bad, but Oblivion was heaps better than it, and Morrowind was heaps better than Oblivion.

Valkyria Chronicles is an amazing new take on the SRPG genre. It's loads of fun.

Demon's Souls is sort of like Oblivion, but with a huge learning curve. You will likely die many many times before you finally get the game, but it's worth it in the end.

For the PS2, I recommend Okami, Persona 3 and Persona 4.

I despise Fallout 3 and know many others that do. It's a terrible game and the mutilation of a beloved franchise.

Fallout 1 & 2 forever. Bethesda can go to hell with their horrible cookie cutter, no personality RPGs. All they do is scatter a bunch of crappy items around, come up with a mediocre first person graphics engine and shovel bland, uninteresting settings onto a map. Then they hire some hobo off the street to write their crappy dialogues that only branch 2 ways.
