So with my First Semester on Campus at Kent State and not at home with someone staring over my back to tell me to do my homework, I pulled a 2.27 GPA, not my proudest moment but I'll admit I was distracted with the campus and parties.

B's in Russian Recitation, Civ2, and Astronomy, a C+ in US History and a D in Russian. I missed classes at the end of the semester due to Bronchitis and a Respitory infection but managed to pass the final Exam with a D without know what out final chapter was about. My next semester is a bit easier and if I can't pull a 3.2 I think I may stop StarCraft for awhile. I really need a 3.0 for insurance but with all my classes being history and Political based it should be a bit easier to handle without Russian >.>(bad idea on my part with no background in the language at all).

Congrats to anyone else who passed this past semester and good luck to you all in your future semesters.

This was my first semester in college and for lack of a better word... it raped me. It's nothing like high school, which I dominated. I lived in fear most of the semester of failing both my chemistry classes, but somehow I managed to not fail any of my classes which took me by surprise. I got a C+ in Chem lab, C+ in Calc II, B- in Gen Chem, and a B in Accelerated Intro to Programming.

Anything less then a C is considered failing at my university. You can probably share my anger toward the people that are on the brink of shitting there pants at the thought of an A-. I never really cared about grades in high school even though I did fairly well (like a 3.7 GPA). I wasn't really one of those people worrying about anything less then an A, I was more concerned with standardized tests then anything because that puts everyone on an even scale.

P.S. I also hate the people coming out of finals like "oh man I failed that so hard"... *3 days later*... "I got a B+".

P.P.S Oh yeah I also forgot to mention I feel you on the being sick part. About 1 month into the semester I found out I had mono. So to my joy I find out I can be looking forward to being tired 24/7 for the next 3-6 months, which pretty much killed me because honestly who can rest that much in college? The doctor recommended 12 hours of sleep daily and I got probably around 6-7 a night.

Thats great guys, the first semester can bre a bitch (my first was ok but my second was LOL 1.2 or something). After you fail a class or get a few Ds you realize you need to REALLY study alot and put a shitload of time into it.

Also i have noticed that if you get to know the professors well they will do amazing things with your grades. In my physics lab i had an 89.1 which is a B on the scale but i emailed my teacher and he gave me 3 extra questions to bump it up to an A (an A, not an A- lol wtf?) and my physics 2 teacher also turned my D into a miraculous solid C. In English i had a B- which somehow became a B+ and in calc 2 i managed to get an 85, which I am more than happy about. So get to know your teachers!

Has anyone else had a retarded physics final? Mine was only five questions worth TWENTY POINTS each. The test is 30% of your whole grade! Bullshit

D in russian, dude, if u didnt cheat, props to u thats actually really good. i got a b+ in russian 1 but i had to cheat every single test, and i had to flirt with a super tall kazhakstanian (wait, what do you call people from kazhakstan? im gettin dumber by the hour) girl in the class to get help from her. had i not done those, i would have most certainly failed even tho i ABSOLUTELY LOVED RUSSIAN!! and now i forgot all of it. BUT I LOVED IT.

I have most of my exams in January and i will probably fail or get terrible grades in some classes ( especially macro lol ).

So far i think i did decent in Social Law ( ~ 15/20 ) and did quite well in Socio ( 18 / 20 but i still have another exam ).

Goals:
6+/20 in macro ( i hate that crap so much that i didn't and won't study. This so called "science" is pompous, useless and completly unrelated with the real word. A fucking math ersatz made by people who were too bad to get a math degree ). That's suck because i love eco history.
10+/20 in micro. Not really interesting but eh it is less non sense.
10+/20 Econometrics
10+/20 Introduction to Finance
12+/20 For the second socio exam.
10+/20 Applied economics. That's like micro.

Bare minimum yO.

I guess that 10/20 is ~ C / C- ?

I wish i had realized how soon i was applying for business school...didn't try at all first semester and got a 3.1 (dropped a lot in the last month...fucking fallout 3). Realized i needed to try a lot harder. So next semester of course i dont try at all and get a 2.9, and a 2.5 for my 2 business classes. Then over the summer i fucking really realized i needed to do shit and finally pulled out a 3.8. Funny how that happens when you study. Where last year i would have lot a let of things go and settled for less i did the extra work to get three 4.0s and a 3.0 in accounting (awoiejfa fuck accounting ). Now i have to get 3.5s in both accounting 202 and econ 202 next semester or i probably won't get into the business school :-/ time to buckle down even more...

moral of the story is the sooner you realize you actually need to work hard in college because it matters unlike high school the better.

My impressions of college thus far are:

You have a lot more free time, since you only have a few classes a week, but you better damn well spend at least double the time studying/doing work. It still works out to less time spent than going to school for 7 hours a day, 5 days a week.

Then again, I just completed my first semester, and I'm only going to community college, and I only had three classes, so my course load wasn't all that bad.

yeah my final was 6 questions for a total of 135 points, with the exam being 30% of my final grade.

it sucks but what can you do?

oh and my 1st semester at college was rough. A in international relations, B in freshman writing, C+ in general chemistry and i had to drop my bio class. fml.

That gpa is very low, but it's not like you don't have time to pull it up. I didn't do so well in my first semester, but this semester, I studied hard and got almost all As.

It's all about the mindset, you should give yourself time to get used to the extra freedom and learn how to manage your time well. Also, you should prioritize. Studying for a final is probably better than getting wasted at a party the night before, since you will have plenty of other opportunities to party and missing a party or two in exchange for a better gpa will be better for your job opportunities in the future.

I had a 77 average or so in physics, which was good for a b+, but I got like a 50 on my final and ended up with a b- and a c+ in the lab t.T

lol this is so standard man. it's usually 5-8 questions 30-40% of your whole grade. unless your school is UCSD in which you get like 25 multiple choice problems that are all from some physics book (the physics book ucb uses)

But yeah I got my first 4.0 this semester and it's my second year. I'm done with all the English and GE bullshit so I didn't have that stuff to worry about.

High school does not adequately prepare students for college these days, even if you did really really well.
They keep lowering the bar for the morons and it affects people who do want to go to college and succeed.
Before I started college I had to learn all HS Algebra over the summer, because the College Prep Interactive math I was taking, WOOPS only taught us Trig/Statistics/etc. It was great in some ways but screwed me in others.
I can be naive and hope they will upgrade HighSchool courses in this country but that would be dreaming.

Don't worry too much about it. A lot of people get poor marks in their first year of college.. especially if you go to a public school. Grad schools notice if you make gradual improvement in your grades from freshmen year, they don't just look at your cumulative GPA as a whole.

I lolled at the UCSD comment.

I would be utterly shocked if any of my physics finals were anything under 30%. The norm is 40-50%. My EM exam was 4 hours, 4 questions, 40% of my grade (possibly 45%?). All my other physics exams were 3 hours, 4-5 questions.

lol, we have the final being 100% of your grade on almost every course, and then it is usually 5-10 questions.

But then the tests looks like this:
http://courses.theophys.kth.se/SI2380/tentamen-20091217.pdf

Anyway, I don't really understand why they would give grades for handins. When I TA courses I notice a huge disparage between what they can do on the handins and what they can do on the much easier tests. Every student who tries to do the handins passes it, while roughly half the students fails on the small quizzes so most of those are done by groups and not individuals or they are just copying other solutions from examples in the book or something like that.

What's for sure is that what they hand in is not a good representation of what they know though.

Most classes the final is supposed to be an overwhelming factor of the grade, which does make sense. As the guy earlier said, people can just copy/group work on the homework, doesn't mean they know the stuff :s

I just finished my first semester, only grade I know so far is an A- in the required writing class. Shitty class ftl, I'm satisfied with the A-, just glad I don't need to deal with it anymore...

That's true by itself but you have to take everything else into consideration. Most schools require at least two grades so the midterm/final is a huge chunk of the grade. Other professors require attendance, pop quizzes, or essays. As a history major (I rarely take any tests, all essays for me!), I only had to take three science courses and a math course. None of the courses had any handins but were all tests with a ten page essay for one of them.

GL in college to you all.

My AP classes were perfect as preparation :/

took plenty of ap's (14) and uni courses, still wasnt prepared and got boned for much of first semester.
a lot of it is attitude...

Alas, that is how life happens sometimes. For one of my econ exams this semester, I would have done pretty well had I not missed studying one part of what we learned (because the notes I had were in the VERY back of one of my folders, and thus forgot it existed), and of course at least 10-15% of that exam was based on it (and of course I won't get anywhere near 100% on the rest of the stuff). Sigh. Exams are annoying.
Oh well.

My GPA improved significantly since my first year of college, so don't get down on yourself.

After getting a 40% on a memorable Calculus midterm freshman year, I told myself I was going to dick around anymore.

As such, I believe the keys to at least a 3.0 gpa for people with poor study habits like me are as follows:

- go to class
- don't skip class
- be in class
- don't sleep in class
- don't doodle in class
- go to class
- go to class
- ask the professor for help during his office hours (they're never as "evil" as you think)
----(note: I've noticed that the more you talk with your professor, the more likely they'll bump up your final grade, maybe a little more partial credit on an exam here and there )
- go to class

I haven't improved my free-time study habits, so what I do is I stay on campus before, between, and after classes, and bust out as much work as I can stand, because I know as soon as I get home, I'll say, "Eh, I'll do it later... Hey computer!... Okay, time to get serious... Hey, I'll text a friend and see what they're doing tonight!... Holy crap, it's almost midnight... What? The OSL Ro8 is tonight? Awesome!"

It's the only way for me to survive... and it's working great this year (fourth year)!

Actually, the best way to do it is to figure out which classes are worth paying attention in. I had an anatomy class in which I never paid any attention in class, but before a test, I would read the relevant chapters and make sure that I understood the material. This wouldn't fly for my Analytical Chemistry class though, since the teacher went beyond the scope of the textbook and I had to pay attention.

But yeah, the best thing to do is to go to class, pay attention, take good notes and then reread them at the end of the day to make sure you absorbed the information. Then as the semester goes along, if you know that you're forgetting something, go back in your notes and refresh your memory. It will take a lot of time, but it's worth it when finals week comes around.

yea a lot of the reasoning behind my grade in Russian was the fact I missed so many days and just couldn't catch myself up. Like history and Astronomy it's simple Reading and writing to catch up but the comprehension and learning the sounds and also memorization is what makes foreign languages so difficult.
