I believe many of those who use Comcast may be unaware of the fact that they have implemented a 250GB bandwidth to every residential users last year in October (2008) and they'll cut you off for a year. But they really haven't been enforcing this to every customer and only to few that uses Terabytes and those who "congest" their nodes. Can ETT shed some light on this if possible?
So I checked my comcast email today and this is what I found.
+ Show Spoiler [This is what it looks like.] + ^ I'm not home so the usage may look quite low but I go home today. ^ + Show Spoiler [My Typical usage] +
So as many of you know, I'm a huge fan of Kpop. I watch the performances and I download them afterwards in 1080p. And that adds up fast over the weekend alone. (Approximately 40- 50G during the weekends) So even if I don't watch promatches, I'm already at 200Gb per month.
What I don't understand is, Why Portland? I'm sure there's better place with more subscribers. Comcast is the only ISP in Portland that has decent DL/UL speeds. Fios is not an option as the closest proximity it is being offered is 5miles away from where I am.
So if you're like me that watches Pro-matches (and Kpop) nightly it is best to switch to a better alternative if you can and away from this mess.

So basically they are giving you more BW? a terabyte is pretty damn big but i think in the end it doesnt even matter cus a lower amount would probably cost less and be just as good

I don't think that pro matches make up that much. If we assume that you watch 5 times a week for 3 hours (which is quite a lot) and the quality being ~500kbit/s (i don't really know, but the way it looks i doubt it is higher) then you would end up with ~13,5gb per month, which is only a smal portion of your overall available traffic.

I find my ISP's policies to be more in line with my needs:

Forgive me but maybe you don't need 1080p kpop?

On December 12 2009 11:40 writer22816 wrote: Forgive me but maybe you don't need 1080p kpop? Not grabbing 1080 cuts will totally defeat the purpose of watching Kpop in the first place.

Since i somehow feel like being between wanting to go to bed and staying up for starcraft and just wasting time, I took the last week of november and calculated how much it would be if you would have watched every available pro match in that week. As my basis for calculation I took the sizes of the files at the tl.net tracker. I think the vods on the tracker are higher quality than the streams though. I ended up with ~11GB. So ~44GB for a month if you watch everything. So if you are at 200GB a month and add the pro matches you would be very close to the limit but still fine.
|
Be happy, 250gb is something we can only dream of here. Mostly it's like 30 gb/month, which fucking sucks hardcore balls if you 've got a 20Mbit connection.

Although 250GB would be more than enough for me, time like this make me glad to live just outside NY. Two awesome ISP with unlimited bandwidth, even if one does totally try and rip you off the service was still good.

Wow I hate when companies do caps like this, and without letting you know about it when you sign with them. Some wait and do this shit as a new plan. That said, 250 should be enough?

On the one hand you have companies that are struggling to maintain profit in the current model of fixed pay per month that must cope with the exponentially growing bandwidth rates of the userbase.
On the other hand you have the users who feel entitled to what they pay for - unlimited (or what was unlimited) bandwidth for a fixed fee.
The only compromise I see, is for companies to offer multiple packages, some being 10gb/month, 100gb/month, and unlimited. Unlimited would be anywhere from 3-10x the rate of what you're paying right now for internet (so like 100-300 month?). The companies on the other hand would have to ensure that every "unlimited" user get at least (for example) 500kb/s DL and 200kb/s UL.
If I were in charge of the business, this is probably what I'd launch (though I obviously dont know the inner workings)

comcast just bought a controlling interest in NBC for 14 billion dollars i don't think they're struggling

Im using Optimum Online, want to switch to Fios but they wouldnt transfer my old phone number over. Anyway the biggest problem with cable is the damn sharing nodes shit, at peak times my speeds go down drastically. And of course OOL takes forever to fix it and probably will have to do it a few times. Hoping to switch to Fios and get the 30/10 or whatever is close to $60 range.
OOL $50 Regular = 15d/2u
OOL Peak Node Sharing BS = 1d/1u (Sometimes it dips below the 1Mbit range, WTF?)
edit: They dont seem to enforce any bandwidth limits but who will with these slow copper wire speeds.
|
I'm with Cox, and my limit is apparently either 60 GB a month, or 150GB a month (I know I'm Preferred something or other, but I'm not sure if I'm Preferred Plus). I've definitely gone over the limit, either way, more than once, and I've never received a notice for bandwidth usage. With Cox, while it's a much lower limit than other ISPs, I think it's just more of a safety, in case they have a dispute with a customer, they can be like "well, okay, you've gone over your cap this many times in the last few months..."

Is the cap 250GB or 250Gb? I'm on Tier 1 Cox Internet and I have a ~60GB Cap? = 480Gb/491,520Mb per month

I ,unfortunately, also am on Comcast. In the area I live you can pretty much only get comcast for broadband internet. When I first got it I actually coaxed them into giving us a buisness line thinking that it would be alright if it was a dedicated business line. Boy was I wrong, I am stuck on the most unstable internet connection I have ever had to deal with it. Random drops, random lags, everything imaginable to make the most frustrating internet ever. I recently also received a similar message.. and thankfully I really have no other broadband options and am on contract for several years anyways. yeah FML

Dear god I dunno how I missed a Comcast thread -_-;;
You pretty much hit the nail on the head... tbh, we don't really care if people are using up a lot of of the bandwidth, so long as it does not disrupt the the experience for others. Despite what a lot of doomsdayers will say, the amount of people that this actually affects, and that we actually contact about, is PAINFULLY small.
And, despite the strong wording, we will never cut someone off without making several attempts to warn them, and, of course, try to convince them to upgrade to business class services if the residential class limits are not meeting their needs.
It's not like one day, out of the blue, your internet will cut off... you WILL know well ahead of time if that's the path you're traveling down.
Anyways, yeah... I had an update about the pilot launch of the usage meter a few days ago. It is actually in response to customers requesting a tool to monitor their usage after the 250GB announcement (which ironically was put in place by customers requesting a 'hard cap' after the vague policies beforehand weren't really doing it for some people [which is ironic in itself, because again we were even LESS strict before, basically going with my original comment about only going after people who are in such an insane amount of excess, it is impacting others]).
But I digress...
The usage meter isn't being piloted in my areas. Usually, whenever we have a new product we want to trial it in 'safe' test markets... usually smaller areas that don't have a huge host of other problems going on that make it harder to tell if whatever we are testing is having an impact. If anything, you should actually be proud that you're in a test area - these tend to be areas with the most reliable service.

Actually, your reaction is exactly why I hate those kind've announcements... they make people think a situation is one way, when it is really something completely different. -_-
Investment money in something that is intended for long term revenue generation (ie, company survival) is completely seperate from the money that runs the day-to-day operations. We've had our fair share of cutbacks... quite a bit actually that I'd rather not get into. We are fortunate enough to be RELATIVELY unaffected by the recession, but are definitely running into some struggles.

Sorry - When I see stuff like this, the ignorance actually gets me a little riled up, but by the same token, I don't doubt that you're having genuine service issues, and just probably haven't talked to anyone yet who has really addressed them. That said, tbh, what you describe is something that can absolutely be fixed. You're a bit outside of the area that I support looking at your registration IP to TL.net, but I should still be able to pull up your equipment and take a look if you'd like. You can feel free to PM me your account number (found on your bill of course) or your modem's CM Mac address if you want me to look into this for you when I get back to the office.

250 is hard to use. Really. Not to mention the amount of entertainment per dollar for the internet is pretty damn high any way you slice it...

I'd be so pissed if I found out that my internet (and neighborhood net) was being slowed down because some fag was dling tons of kpop.

I'm afraid I might be one of those painfully small people that would in fact get contacted by Comcast. I'm just hoping that I don't because my neighborhood is quite small and I wouldn't slow anybody down at 2 - 6 in the morning. ='(

Well, worst case, use it like you normally would, and if you surpass the limit and they (our abuse department) feel compelled enough to make a big deal out of it, we'll send you a notification, or even try to call you. You won't get kicked off for the first offense. And TBH if you have been downloading like that and we had a problem with it, you would have been contacted a LONG time ago.
