The rules state that "any cards in the chosen pile that you can't play or you choose not to play remain exiled." Does this mean I can't play them later on - If the pile I choose has a counterspell in it, can I wait and use it later?

Does this mean I can't play them later on - If the pile I choose has a counterspell in it, can I wait and use it later? All the cards have to get played immediately. The act of playing the cards is part of the resolution of the spell. This is of course, what makes Brilliant Ultimatum terrible (it's bad in every constructed format, and an extremely late pick in limited) -- the opponent can look at the context of the game, and split a bunch of dead cards into both piles.

And the deck 'Magical Xmasland' is seen to be pretty hit or miss. Violent, Titanic, and Cruel are all game-winning bombs in limited, so while Titanic and Violent may not be as good in constructed, they're still noteworthy. Clarion and Brilliant are just awful in every format, though.

http://wizards.com/Magic/Magazine/Article.aspx?x=mtg/daily/eventcoverage/worlds09/video4 Here's the magic christmasland deck that played 4 violent ultimatums, with 4 cruel ultimatums in the sideboard. Takes guts to bring this to the world championships =D The other 3 ultimatums are pretty trash though. Maybe some allies deck could break clarion ultimatum?

"Magic 2010" Which is actually the 11th. Once they got to ten, it seemed like a good idea to stop naming sets increasingly larger numbers. As a side note, I also quit after ice age. But I came back for Mirrodin (3 years ago now?)...trust me, Magic is a LOT better now than it was. Also, popularity and attendance at tournaments have been skyrocketing.
