With the countless talented writers in TL, I was hoping if any of you would give me some tips on how to start the opening sentence and introduction of a Comparison Essay. Recently my papers and probably finals too will consist of these types of essays.
However, I always seem to have a MASSIVE PROBLEM with coming up a solid introduction, I usually spend HOURS thinking of a good intro and thesis(Fortunately, at the end my intro/thesis comes out great). When I get my intro and thesis I could just scribble forever in the body-paragraphs.
Ive been told to start with a quote relating to the subjects, but, usually I just begin with a term. For example, before I had a paper on Cultural Assimilation, in this case comparing my country (China) to the American culture, I started this essay with a brief explanation of the term "melting pot".
edit: Right now Im stumbling to create a good opening sentence for Women in Culture, comparing Gloria Anzaldua and Sotomayor. Is this considered a homework topic? I just want some input

right now I'm working on a sociology paper, but to address your question i think you should at least try to focus on your whole paper and fill in the parts that you can first and then go back to write the intro. Sometimes it's more efficient if you don't do it linearly but construct each piece together and develop the paper as a whole.

I like to start out comparison papers with a statement about what I believe the prevailing majority viewpoint to be and why it is or isn't correct. E.g. While many people believe blah blah, in reality blah blah. A deeper look into blah blah reveals that this superficial viewpoint is blah blah.
I can't really go much deeper than that. I don't know anything about the subject you suggested and without a subject I know something about it's kind of hard to suggest a good opening statement for a comparison paper. There's not really any sort of formula, I write a different kind of opener for different things.

if you're writing to compare two women, i think what's more important is your ideas behind the comparison, and not the introduction. the bulk of your grade should rest on your analysis and thoughts on how these women are alike and different, and their impact on culture, not a flashy intro. focus on the body, the intro and conclusion will come naturally later.
