A guy I've known almost my whole life recently robbed a Walgreen's with a fake gun and stole $4,000 worth of OxyContin. I was in Cub Scouts with him, I went to grade school, middle school, and high school with him, and he was my roommate. It blows my fucking mind that he could do this. I haven't talked to him for six months or so, and I knew he was having some drug problems, but "armed" robbery is just not something I thought he was capable of.

He turned himself in after his parents saw him on the news and he's in jail right now, waiting for his court date. If he's real unlucky, he'll probably get prison for 5 years and 7 months. He's the kind of guy that prison would fuck. If he's lucky, I guess maybe he'll get rehab.

It won't stop blowing my mind that he did this. It's totally unbeleivable.

I don't even know if it was because he was addicted (though I'm sure that was a factor) -- I think it was more so he could sell it. His parents had just kicked him out and he had no where to go and no money. I hope they feel fucking terrible. Send your kid to rehab before you kick him out.

And yeah, oxycodone and heroin are basically interchangeable.

Oh my bad then. That's crazy

I took some painkillers for a while, a little bit longer than my pain, but it was hydrocodone, I don't know if that's strong. I felt a little sick after I stopped (ran out) but never felt "addicted"

OxyContin must be some pretty strong shit then

You feel euphoric, like super weed or something. One of the worst parts about this is that I was doing drugs with him for more than a year... I was there the first time he smoked weed, did coke, did opiates.

I foresee someone making a thread on how to get it solely by this comment.

In regards to your friend thou, kinda of sucks. People's morals and beliefs do change as they mature thou (especially under his condition). Good luck to him in court. Do you plan on showing up to his court appearance?

Hard core opioid drugs like oxycodone are really really dangerous. They are so addictive... and so hard to stop. Withdrawal is like hell. I feel really bad for your friend.

Painkillers suck. Nausea and itchy noses for the loss.

OC is garbage. My buddy plugged like 3 pills once and tried to kill his mom. I hate that stuff.

Oxy is not low on the addiction scale. It is second to Heroin only pretty much, as someone said an Oxy 80 will go for as much as 80 dollars on the street. A lot of Heroin users rob small convenience stores to feed their habit, it's not uncommon in the world of opioid addiction. Hopefully he can get on Suboxone and get his life straightened out. I got on Suboxone after 2 years of an awful dope habit and it has saved my life.

Anyone wondering what Oxycontin/Heroin feels like, if you have taken Vicodin (Hydrocodone) or any other opiate painkillers, it's a strong version of that. A basic Percocet is 5 or 10 mg of Oxycodone. Oxycontin is basically an extended release form of Oxycodone, available in 40mg or 80mg doses. The "Oxy" stands for Oxycodone, the "Contin" is short for "Continuous", as in continuous release. The outside of the pill dissolves slowly to continuously release the Oxycodone for people with chronic pain, but addicts crush the pill up and snort it, circumventing the continuous release and getting the entire dose in one go. It really does feel like snorting Heroin, although nothing is close to shooting Heroin. The pills go for a ridiculously high price on the street; Oxycodone is generally between .50 and 1 dollar per mg, so a single 80mg OC pill can fetch 80 dollars, although not always that much. A person with a bad Heroin habit will sell the pill though, and buy 4 20 bags of dope, getting 4 times the high. A single 20 bag of raw dope can get you the same high as an Oxy 80, probably more, for 1/4 the price.

a single 80 mg oxy is like $35-40 here. That should give you an idea on how much people are willing to put up for it. It's like an expensive version of heroin that white collar people use because heroin has a much worse stigma about it, but it's no more or less dangerous than heroin. I've seen people do some pretty vile things for less just enough to get high. Robbing a place for enough to last the average addict a couple weeks isn't that crazy... well it's crazy, but for an addict it's pretty understandable.

LOL, hydrocodone is also a semi-synthetic opiate derived from codeine and thebaine. Wow, I am surprised when people will just put drugs in their body without doing some research on them first. I dont think I have put a legal or illegal drug in my body since I was 13 without researching it first.

I didnt say it was illegal or stupid. I am just surprised that people will put something in their body without wanting to know what it is they are putting in their body. It may just be that I am a much different person then you, but I am very interesting in knowing that sort of thing. Sorry if I offended you.

edit: and just because it is a legal drug doesnt make it any safer than illegal ones. I know we have been told to trust doctors, but I just like to be aware of what it is that I am putting in my body.

edit2: You had no concern that you might of been prescribed an addictive or harmful drug? Many people are prescribed pain medications by their doctor and become addicted. I would just think you would want to know what chance of addiction that drug presents so you can take the necessary steps to ensure you dont become addicted yourself.

I admire your dedication to do research on any drug before you take it. But in a lot of circumstances, the best research is just asking doctors. On the internet you have to wade through a lot of conspiracy theories and other crap. Doctors spend half their life learning these things, and a good doctor will watch over you carefully if you're taking something potentially addictive. The drugs are also studied and approved by FDA (however fallible they may be, it's still far better than taking an unapproved/illegal drug). So it's probably safe for DoctorHelvetica* to trust his doctor.

If someone is addicted to their prescribed pain meds, it's possible that their doctor is stupid, but more likely it's just the best option they have, they would rather need a drug than to suffer constant pain.

A few years after highschool, through the grapevines and chattering of friends, I heard about a large scale drug operation in my home town that had been busted by an extensive police sting. The ringleaders of the scheme had essentially taken over a mom and pop pharmacy. The couple who'd run the place were getting too old to take care of the business, and so they'd left the trusted, albeit young, employees in charge. They, in turn, transformed the business into a massive pill trafficking machine, all the while maintaining the appearance of legitimate business.

The operation eventually grew so large that it collapsed in on itself, a grim supernova that sent many local teens to rehab if they were lucky, to jail if they weren't. It was while reading articles about this case that I came across a list of those initial conspirators whose simultaneous ingenuity and greed had spawned this corporation, a board of directors who aged as young as 17 years old. Among the names was one I recognized immediately. The younger brother of one of my childhood friends, I couldn't help but remember him standing there, 5 years old, as we played Nintendo or basketball or action figures, content to watch in awe of us and our prowess at all those things. Now he was headed to jail for up to five years for selling pain medications to other teenagers.

Sometimes it's surreal to consider the divergent paths life can take, sending others down roads we might find inconceivable, never quite knowing how close we could have come to taking them.

*not a real doctor, but he is a real worm??

Off the top of my head I can probably name three or four illegal/unapproved drugs that are vastly safer than any prescription pill (with great medicinal value). Most doctors I have met actually don't know anything about the scientific workings/effects of the pills they prescribe. They reference the prescription label or booklet as much as most people do, and prescribe off simply knowing what pills generally counter other things, and usually make sure you won't have an allergic reaction to it. I'm sorry, but you realllly should not base your standards of what you put into your body based off the government/FDA. Tragically enough, they are not for self-sovereignty, so therefore cannot have an unbiased say in these matters.

man. that's a huge bummer. i'm currently taking psychopathology (i'm a psych major) and it's definitely possible for people to change significantly (and develop psychological disorders) after adolescence.

I'm really sorry to hear about your friend-- I'm sure it's also negatively affecting you as well. feel better!

Oh my bad then. That's crazy

I took some painkillers for a while, a little bit longer than my pain, but it was hydrocodone, I don't know if that's strong. I felt a little sick after I stopped (ran out) but never felt "addicted"

OxyContin must be some pretty strong shit then

LOL, hydrocodone is also a semi-synthetic opiate derived from codeine and thebaine. Wow, I am surprised when people will just put drugs in their body without doing some research on them first. I dont think I have put a legal or illegal drug in my body since I was 13 without researching it first.

I doubt you know of illegal drugs that are safer than ANY prescription drug, since I doubt you have studied all approved drugs ever. For the most part, legal drugs are legal since they serve some medicinal benefit that makes any side effects worth suffering, and illegal drugs are illegal because they don't have a demonstrated medical benefit or they have terrible side effects. The FDA is absolutely not a perfect judge of which drugs are okay to take and which are not, but they are better than nothing. If a drug is approved by the FDA it's because it went through several studies that showed it had some medical benefit and didn't kill people. Even though these studies can be flawed, it's still safer in general than taking an illegal drug that didn't pass FDA requirements.

You are right that some doctors really don't know anything about what they're prescribing. I trusted a doctor like this when I was younger, and she pretty much made my life hell for a while T_T OTOH, it's unfair to describe doctors in general in this way. Some are very knowledgeable and have studied in depth the effects of the drugs they prescribe. Personally, I'm pretty big into researching the drugs I take and how/why they were approved by FDA, ever since I got screwed by the "doctor" I just mentioned. T_T But I'm not about to look down on people who trust their doctors, since I don't know any better sources to tell those people they should trust.

You can't be serious... It's a synthetic opiate. It's addiction potential is equivalent to that of heroin.

Though not as bad as an addiction, my brother knew a friend that he went to high school with that robbed a internet cafe.

Addiction is terrible as I have seen it ruin lives.
