I've been using Stardock's Fences to keep them organized. (I run Vista, btw)
Practically speaking, this has been working just fine. My main complaints, however, is that it comes packaged with some other weird program that acts kind of like a Steam for smaller apps. In addition, it seems to have started running in some kind of reduced functionality mode, and I can no longer add shortcuts into old fences -_-;;.
Beyond that, it's just not very pretty.
What do you guys use to organize your desktop? I have a 22" LCD monitor, so I figured I might as well nerd it up like everyone else and make it pretty. (:
EDIT Oh, and I might as well ask as well...what other add-ons and nifty little apps do you use? This is more out of curiosity than anything else.
Thanks.

just lots of garbage on it, i don't really use the desktop too much

I dont have any exe on my desktop at all save for some documents and folders, and even most of those are just temps. I use launchy to just run everything.
|
Windows 7 quick launch integration into the task bar is pretty nice. (I keep mine on the left). My desktop is empty.
|
empty desktop besides for my folders. like school stuff, music, and games.
|
Anything I use I put on the desktop, and I only use the start bar when I have too many windows open and I don't feel like right click-> show desktop. Mostly programs, folders, games and notepad memos/lists.
|
If you hit the windows key + m, it will minimize all windows as well (:

really useful to have different sets of icons on different desktops (and I can now choose whatever BG suits my mood!)
I don't use any program icons anymore. They've all been replaced by launchy (awesome program).
Good luck!

Cool, I'll check out despot and launchy, thanks, triangle.
I don't really get the whole empty desktop all the time thing, tbh. It's nice for it to look all clean and everything, but I'm too lazy to go into the start menu or even a second folder to access my most commonly used programs, haha.
Launchy might change that, though. (:

Exactly. I only have a 4 apps in my quick launch (Trillian, Opera, Foobar, Steam) and the rest is organized nicely in my start menu. I only have my recycling bin on my desktop which I also use to run Ccleaner.
Edit: How many applications do you use all the time? I only need four.

Launchy might change that, though. (: Vista's indexing has changed that really, more often than not you can get things by hitting windows key and typing a bit, for most people that's extremely fast. The difference between that and launchy is minimal I think. Though launchy is useful for when you have things that just don't index well.
<-- Also a fan of empty desktops
I keep a ton of playlists, organized folders and such though. Empty desktop is more of an aesthetic thing than anything else =/

my desktop (i run XP) is mostly empty, i run everything via windowsKey+R and custom shortcuts in C:\Windows (it's like Launchy but doesn't suck)
edit: i guess now that i look at it, i really just have txt files on my desktop, they change quite often.. i am slowly transferring to OneNote though, man that program is absolutely brilliant.. if only it booted up as fast as notepad :S
|
Yeah, I run XP which is why launchy is so useful. If Vista already implemented it, not really going to make a difference.
Edit- and yeah, empty desktops ftw.

The best way to organise desktop icons is right click the desktop -> view -> show desktop icons. That should disable your icons.
You'll never have a desktop more organised than that.
