So I woke up yesterday morning with a shitty cough and a fever of 39, my whole body hurts, and my entire chest is filled with phlegm. JUST WONDERFUL.
It's somewhat amusing considering how I could be quoted saying the odds of getting swine flu are astronomically low, but hey, I guess there is still a 93% chance its not H1N1 according to the rates of actual cases vs reported cases. I was planning on getting vaccinated tomorrow... thats Murphy's law for you.
I would honestly suggest anyone who isn't planning to get the vaccine to get it, if you look at the numbers on the CDC website relating to confirmed cases of swine flu and compare them to vaccine studies from independents, you will find that you are much more likely to die from swine flu than get a side effect. The amount of apathy and paranoia regarding these vaccines is just truly amazing, and while I admit the odds of me dieing from this shit (if its even H1N1) are extremely small, boy is it no fun. It's pretty much sitting on the bench of life for 3-5 days. If you are unlucky, unhealthy, or a child you also can get pneumonia and become hospitalized.
Sure the hype is massively overinflated, sure you are about 15 times more likely to die in a car accident this year than get the swine flu, but hey, the odds of a vaccine side effect are roughly 1 in 800000, and even this number is said to be inflated considering that people who get vaccines often have other coinciding health problems. Fun fact: Your lifetime odds of dieing from hot water are roughly the same as the 1 time odds of getting vaccine side effects.
If possible, go out and get the shot, honestly, this shit is not fun at all, and by sitting idle, you are just allowing to it spread even more. If you aren't convinced by some random kid ranting on TL.net (as you shouldn't be) go do some research. You will find that the hard evidence supporting vaccinations is massively more abundant than the nay-sayers. I implore you to read carefully and critically, think about who wrote the article you are reading, why they are qualified, and where they got their information. Just because you read an article that said some kid died from the vaccine doesn't mean the vaccine is bad, ask questions like: "Did he have other health problems?" "What was his cause of death as determined by autopsy?" etc. Do the same for my side of the argument as well, because there is just as much shitty journalism pumping the H1N1 fear.
Most of all, remember to eat healthy and drive carefully, because it is far more important.

Saying something like "then why would the US government set up roadblock drills?" or "but why do we see articles about people dieing or being paralyzed after getting the vaccines" ARE PERFECTLY FINE. What I don't want to see is "the vaccine is more of a risk than the flu" or "the flu vaccine is a secret conspiracy to weaken those its given to in order to reduce the global population" or "aerial contrails are a form of soft-biological weapon". If you plan to make claims like these without supporting information from reliable, reasonable sources, do not bother posting.

while i do agree with the effectiveness of vaccines and condemn the conspiracy theorists that the gov. is trying to kill us all, i think it would be more convincing if your provided sources were non-governmental academic journals instead of reports from official government/government supported websites.

You should look up the death rates by age group. Sure you may have an immaculate health record like myself, and only get sick maybe once a year, but look at these numbers: http://www.cdc.gov/h1n1flu/qa.htm . Ultimately with proper medical care your chances of dieing are pretty much 0, but I want to ask you this: What if H1N1 were to infect 30% of the population over the next 6 months. Do you really think everyone will have access to the proper treatment of severe pneumonia? Also, how does your personal choice to not get the vaccine influence others with respect to carrying the virus on? and how will that effect not only the health of those around you, but their productivity and happiness?

In anycase I'm better now, my head hurts less, my throat hurts less, and I can think straight.
No flu shot for me, my immune system is gunna take care of this shit

I totally agree, thats why I tried to bring some perspective with the NSC odds of dieing report. 1/5 die from heart disease... seems like a much bigger threat if you ask me  .

Yup, the overwhelming majority of the time this is the case. One thing Id like to mention, is that since 93% of the reported cases of H1N1 are other sicknesses including seasonal flu you might want to consider still getting vaccinated once you are healthy.

If you don't get the vaccine, at least get plenty of Vitamin D. There hasn't been a large-scale study on it yet, but it looks promising. Even if it turns out to be wrong, 5000IU per day won't hurt you unless you have one of a handful of pre-existing conditions (or you're already getting more than enough from the sun, which isn't possible in most of the US this time of year, and definitely not in our icy hat).

I agree, the problem is that access to scholarly articles that provide relevant information to the discussion isn't exactly abundant. If I could remember my login for my online library from university I would totally check it out. Personally I trust the CDC, and ECDC, but I see where you are coming from. Often governments will introduce some bias, possibly over-hyping the situation, but hey, at least its not fox news.

Ye olde documentary on the 1976 swine flu 'pandemic' and government's vaccination program. Now I'd like to believe that in today's world, there's more checks and balances but I can't shake that nagging feeling that there's another bunch of crooks behind the wheels.
The least government can do is spread scientific information. What do they do? They take bucketloads of money to convince people with fancy ads and carefully formulated sentences, as sheep are deemed dumb.
