On Friday afternoon, for the first time in 4 days, I left my room. My hair tangled, my body odor wafting out into the open air, my WeMadeFox Jersey looking ridiculous paired with my purple shorts, I took a trek into uncharted territory. The shower.
I had to leave that evening with my mother, she could not see me like this!
With all the fury your typical hikkikomori could muster I groomed. I showered, combed my hair, washed my face, and all that jazz (even use exfoliator!)
By the time my mother had arrived home I looked more like her son and less like a cave troll. She expressed gratitude that I was a visible presence in the home and we made out on our way to Los Angeles. What was there? My grandmother, now frail and mentally unable to care for herself we have decided that the home we purchase in Oceanside will now have to have just one more occupant.
So we were organizing a garage sale to sell her stuff.
Her stuff.
I had forgotten how much stuff she had even though I last visited 7 months ago.I had forgotten a lot of things.
Such as how much I liked my mother, conversation, and people. Over the summer I became reclusive, depressed, and dependent on hydrocodone just to tolerate the crippling loneliness that seems to be like a chronic illness. Fading out and in, hitting you hard when you least expect it.
We discussed HMO's, religion, loud people, vocational school, my Uncle Eddy (an upstanding fellow), and my own aspirations. At 8:00 pm we took an exist about 1/4th of the way to L.A to get some food; we mutually agreed to McDonalds.
The young lady (probably still in High School) at the counter was cute but she had that blank expression on her face where you were positive she didn't know dick about anything worth discussing. In fact she didn't know dick about McDonald's food.
Excuse me, what condiments exactly come on the Big n Tasty?
It comes with fries and a drink
Uhm, I mean to say what items are on the sandwich itself?
Uh...I think there is mayonaisse and uhhhh bacon?
I looked at the photo of the Big N Tasty. Mayonaisse? Conceivable. Bacon? Not a fat chance.
Ok...I'll have a large combo with just mayonaisse, ketchup, cheese, and tomato. Ok?
My mother ordered a chicken salad and received a chicken sandwich. After finally getting our order down we sat to discuss the absurdity of the McDonald's monopoly game and I urged her to purchase a cheap phone and an iPod touch instead of an iPhone, which she wanted and I felt she could not use to its full advantage (at least not to justify the price)
We set off on the freeway again (I forgot how good McDonald's fries are) and we didn't talk much. My mother turned onto the wrong freeways THREE TIMES delaying our trip by a solid hour and at the crack of 11 pm, we arrived safe and sound.
Introductions were quick as we were all tired, my Grandma looked fine and really just a little crazy. I walked past mountains of stamps and into the garage where I could get a cold drink.
I stopped dead in my tracks. MOUNTAINS of boxes for the garage sale. She had literally (and she did inventory) over 2,000 elementary school level educational books. AN entire patio filled with over 20,000 dollars worth of art supplies (seriously enough to open up a shop)
I grabbed an Arnold Palmer from the fridge (half-lemonade, half-tea, all delicious) and retreated to the guest room to watch The Office until I dozed off...

She has 10 shelves in the garage and 4 in the hallway filled with books. The garage is all elementary, the ones in the hallway vary, but probably easily over 500 in the hallway.
She has over 2600 individual ink stamps. Organized into boxes based on category.

It was an incredible transformation. My skin was green, my hair worse than Cosmo Kramers, and i had giant purple bags under my eyes. I really should not let myself go again.
