Also, as people have mentioned, this virus does rape your host file. Unless you do some weird networking in your house, or you happen to get this virus on a work PC, I would just erase everything in the file and you should be good to go. Or, you can always just copy in the following from notepad: # Copyright (c) 1993-1999 Microsoft Corp. # # This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows. # # This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each # entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should # be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name. # The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one # space. # # Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual # lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol. # # For example: # # 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server # 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host 127.0.0.1 localhost Where is the host file? I dunno. Google it I guess.

In all seriousness merach's tip worked great. I just had to go into the icon properties (Right-click, properties) And uncheck Read-Only before I could save the new file.

When you open your browser and try to connect to "www.teamliquid.net", your computer won't automagically know what that is, and it'll need an IP address to communicate, so the following things will happen: Checks the host file for teamliquid.net's IP address. Checks DNS cache (cmd -> ipconfig /displayDNS) for teamliquid.net's IP address. Checks browser cache for teamliquid.net's IP address. Didn't find it? Forward to next DNS server, out on the intertubes. So it's basically just a redirection. It won't continue through the list of checks if it finds the IP in the hosts file. Obviously this is used to send you to malware sites instead of google.com, and whatnot. The hosts file is no longer in use, and it's just hanging around from the days before the DNS system, so that if you wanted to add your neighbour you could just type in "13.13.13.13 neighbour" to make your life easier, so that you wouldn't have to remember IP addresses to everywhere. tl;dr: Making it read-only won't affect anything at all.
