This is a quick retelling of the Butterfly Lovers. I did this in about 15 minutes....so the quality of the summary is rather poor.
Start:
Zhu (surname) Yingtai is hot.
YT Zhu: Daddy! I don't want to grow up to be a bimbo!
Old Zhu: No, daughter, that is what chinese parents dream of for their daughters. Go play with your makeup.
YT's brother is sick.
YX Zhu: I am sick! I die.
Old Zhu: I guess I should make use of the tuition I paid. YT! Go study classics!
YT Zhu: Yay!
===
At school, YT Zhu meets her brother's best friend, Shanbo Liang.
Shanbo Liang (we'll call him SB Liang for short) is a pale, thin student.
SB Liang: Yingxian! You look so different! How was your summer?
YT/YX Zhu: It was great.... I had a lot of fun and--
SB Liang: Hey, remember when we composed poetry together?
(time passes)
(three years pass)
YT/YX: I have to go home! Oh noes.
SB Liang: Let me send you off.
YT/YX: Hints that I'm a girl.
SB Liang: Hahahah? What a funny joke you have just made!
YT/YX: Hints that I'm a girl.
SB Liang: Hahahah? What a funny joke you have just made!
YT/YX: Hints that I'm a girl.
SB Liang: Hahahah? What a funny joke you have just made!
YT/YX: So when I get back, I need to intro you to my sister. She is smokin hot.
SB Liang: Yeah of course man! See ya later.
(time passes)
SB Liang comes to visit YT.
YT: I am actually a girl.
SB Liang: What? Holy shit. (Thinks for a moment) Hey I have an awesome Confucius book at my place, but I actually can't understand what he's trying to say. You're more of a nerd than I am, so want to come over and check it out?
YT: What are you trying to say?
SB Liang: I love you.
YT: I love you too.
Old Zhu: Uh oh! Too late for you YT. Sorry you have to marry Ma Wencai (we will call him WC Ma).
YT: No!!!
SB Liang: I am going to go off and become a banking analyst and make a lot of money, and save you!
WC Ma: Hahaha have fun doing that, I will probably be one of ur clients! AHAHAHA
(Wedding night)
YT: sob sob sob
WC Ma: AHAHAHAHA
(meanwhile)
SB Liang: Fucking excel! Crashed and wiped out half of the model... again.
(five hours later)
SB Liang falls out of his chair and has a seizure. Dies.
(meanwhile)
Wedding procession: yay yay yay! cheer for wedding
WC Ma: What? Whirlwinds? Hey look it's my banking analyst's grave!
YT Zhu: Oh noooo!!!! SB Liang has died! My poor SB!
Thunder: And now I boom.
YT Zhu: I through myself into the grave and join you!
WC Ma: Get back here you dumb bitch!
YT Zhu: SB! I love you! (Dies)
Grave opens up and we have the sequel.

lol Romeo + Juliet
The question is which ripped off what? Shakespeare or the chinese legend? I think the chinese probably did the ripping off part
|
Does Romeo and Juliet predate the Tang Dynasty (according to wiki)? If not, then I don't think the Chinese did the ripping off.

you underestimate the power of transferring of memes and urban legends and the change of history, religion is a good example of that, heck just go on snopes.com and youll see the speed of urban legends passing and being accepted as reality in this day and age, the problem is you can never really know which came first with that problem
|
I'm not quite sure what you're getting at. Are we still talking about the Chinese legend and Romeo and Juliet? I never said any of it was real or not, just that Wiki states that the earliest record of the legend dates back to the Tang Dynasty.
|
I don't know if this was supposed to be funny, but it wasn't.
|
Edit: Better left unsaid.
|
how the hell is this and romeo and juliet in any way similar.
this is about a girl who dresses up like a boy so that she can go to an all boys school.
if anything, this is more similar to a lot of modern jdramas like host club or hana kimi.
|
heh, i always knew it was something like romeo and juliet, but i never knew the details. thanks for enlightening me. i enjoyed the read. why does SB Liang die though?

Butterfly Lovers would then be ripping off Metamorphoses if any, with no need to rip off another literary work written centuries into the future.

You're right! It's like Twelth Night!
The chinese story ripped off Shakespeare twice!

|
Wikipedia can be edited by anyone though.
|
The United States is also infamous for harbouring a lot of idiots.
|
lololololol I actually enjoyed it ...
|
I like how people are talking about ripping of Shakespeare without any apparent knowledge that ripping off of other people's stories was pretty much all Shakespeare did
|
i like how when someone mentions anything chinese they automatically assume that it was ripped off of something western, even going so far as to say "but wikipedia can be edited by anyone!" when someone points out that the entire dynasty predates shakespeare.
|
hey guys im chinese and i like shakespeare
btw we invented pasta
|
Lol at the people who think Chinese people ripped it off Shakespeare. Lol at people who think wikipedia isn't reliable. Also, many types of stories just follow almost the same exact plotlines just by chance because of how human's enjoy stories. That's why there's the hero's journey monomyth out there. And use wikipedia to see what it is o.o http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monomyth

Wikipedia isn't always right.
In fact, in this case I'm sure its wrong.

|
The Tang Dynasty didn't even invent Tang.
This is horseshit.
|
This is just terrible. Take an old-fashioned story and add the internet + teen speak = the OP. And then there's a guy who's trying to argue when a well-documented dynasty existed.
/facepalm

Hahaha made me crack up a few times, nice job. : ]
|
|
Tang Dynasty - 618-907 AD (Dark Ages in Europe) Shakespeare - died 1616 (after the Dark Ages obviously).
After the Tang Dynasty there are still like 9 or 10 other Chinese dynasties to go and if the Tang was after Shakespeare then we can't have gotten through all them in time for the Boxer Rebellion and whatever in the early 1900s.
Right there. Some people are really dumb.

Add in some random flames and not so subtle solicitations for cybering, and this thread could serve as a representation of discourse over the internet in general.
