As the title says, a friend that I knew online committed suicide a few months ago. I only found out recently. I am somewhat devastated. However, at the same time, I do not know how to respond. How I found out about his death is quite simple. I had two screennames and he basically liked one of them, and as a result, I gave it to him. Like myself, he was always on all the time. Because I have been very busy with my life and school, I did not notice his inactivity on AIM or MSN. I decide to log in AIM and see a message saying "Cody...?" (which was his name) and I say "No."

I then proceed to find out that he committed suicide. He had fallen off his uncle's apartment's roof or something of the sort. This is confirmed because I searched his name and remember where he lived.

I don't really consider online friends "friends," but this guy was an exception. I met him on a Battle.Net UMS clan. This was when he was in 8th grade and I was in 7th grade. He told me a lot about himself: He was poor and his stepfather always abused his mother. He then moved to boarding school, got great grades and went on to Carnegie Mellon.

He quit Starcraft, but we would always talk. He was INCREDIBLY intelligent. I always got a lot of good homework advice and help. We shared similar interests - anime and games. Really, he was just an awesome person to talk to.

I never knew what he looked like, but I am incredibly sad. He did not seem depressed and his future seemed really bright. I even talked to some of his friends (on my secondary screenname) and they had no clue as well. Rest in Peace Cody.

Has this kind of experience (death of online friend) ever happened to anybody?

A person I used to play WoW with disappeared on day. He was a really cool guy, but I never knew what happened to him. We used to talk daily so either he died (I really hope not :[ ) or he quit all computer related things. Perhaps he had just had enough of me?

I'm truly sorry it is a strange feeling I bet.

I'm truly sorry to hear about that. That's tough, mate. I've never experienced anything quite like this, but there are a few people online that I've lost touch with and I'm still not entirely sure what's become of them.

Anyway, hang in there. Online friends like that are one in a million, and I'm sure he'd be glad to know he is remembered.

There was a period of time where I thought my friend died (not online)

His phone was off, he closed his Youtube acc, he was never on AIM (which he always was) it was weird. But then he signed on one day and we were like :O

Wow that is awful, if it did happen to me then I am unaware of it since I have not heard, read or seen anything about their deaths. One guy in particular was probably the coolest person I have ever played online with in my life but haven't spoken to in a year or so, i do know he is alive because he is a big halo3 player and i see him posting videos on youtube once in a while, he is getting quite good and i hope to join his team in about 3-4 months. But sorry to hear about cody

I had a pen pal email assignment back in 10th grade of high school and I talked to someone from the heart of China. Even after 10th grade ended, we would always email and talk about how our lives were and try to find common grounds on which we could play games together (I play SC, he plays DotA ). Anyway I replied to one of his emails and haven't heard from him in a year or so. Of course it doesn't mean he died or anything but I sure miss the good conversation.

About 6-7 years ago I was in a team on UsEast called cc_ (Colossal Chaos) and became friends with a few of the other members, we talked on Ventrillo almost every day and Yahoo messenger. Then one day the only girl in our group didn't log on for a few days until her brother eventually told us she killed herself at her grandparents house.

aw I'm sorry

I always have a big fear that if something were to happen to me or my online friends that the other party would never find out.

I feel your pain man. Just recently one of my online friends was hit by a car and killed. Even worse, i had to spend 30 minutes on vent dumbstruck trying to find something to say to his dad. It was the worst experience i have ever had online.

It is really strange feeling so sad about someone who you really didn't know and yet care so much about. Something that really cant be explained to people who haven't been there. I am really sorry you about your friend.

It really doesn't matter if online it's an online friend or not. A friend is a friend who'll make you smile with his/her stories or help you in times of need, if you share the same bond online it will be the same when you meet each other IRL.. RIP Cody
I don't think I've ever wished my opponent good luck prior to a game. When I play, I play to win. I hope every opponent I ever have is cursed with fucking terrible luck. I hope they're stuck playing underneath a stepladder with a black cat in attendance a

I remember being part of an online forum back a while ago. There was this member that always made intelligent and funny posts. Some people even got to know him in real life. It came as a shock to the forum when we found out he committed suicide on the day of his birthday.

Sorry to hear about your friend mate.

I'm sorry to hear that.
I had a semi-depressed friend I met on D2 who was extremely talkative and nice to me. But he seemed a little unhappy with his life and he went to the Navy. Haven't heard from him since, but I hope he's doing well. He always said shit like "I'm gonna get killed but at least it'll be for a good cause" but hopefully not~
