As the OP Title says it all,

looks like TL.net's trolling radar has gone off the roof, even I myself an insurgent was detected and got my ass whoofed by manlifesto himself.

Licmyobelisk was just temp banned for 2 days by Manifesto7.

That account was created on 2008-08-27 12:34:23 and had 655 posts.

Reason: http://www.teamliquid.net/blogs/viewblog.php?topic_id=101380

If you dont like a thread, dont read, dont post.

Then found out that some of the troll lords themselves (e.i. fanatacist and CM) were banned and given warnings that next ban is permanent.

I'm not complaining here and I know that TL is really strict when it comes to house rules but why the sudden change? I mean you guys had tolerance before to some of the long time posters that "troll" or make "flame baits" here. Now, seems to me it's a very different ball game.

As for myself, I'm still going to adhere to the rules, and this post is more of curiosity rather than rebellion.

This post should also warn the other's that are planning to do the same stunts I've done before and here are some of them:

derailing backho's blogs

P.S: Those are the first time I've ever tried trolling too much. If I'm gonna get banned again for doing that then better safe than sorry.

Hmm ok, what's your point really? A stricter TL can only be better in my eyes.
I hate the post below mine because it feels War3-ish.

i got banned too for two days for my first time for posting a retarded comment in a retarded blog. i learned that was no excuse. though i took the punishment wholeheartedly and try as much as possible to make my posts informative since that day (that is when you realize you're addicted to tl haha)

honestly i have to agree this makes tl a better place to post and learn from, otherwise this would become 4chan.

tl has given me a shitload of laughs, tears, rages and useful information and just because this is an online thing doesn't make it different from RL.

this happens everywhere when a sweep of newbies comes in and ppl in charge have to decide whether to scare them away or keeping them. its all because of sc2.

PS: its not like i wouldnt appreciate a rather clean environment but at the same time i also think its been a lot more relaxed "back in the days". i just wanted to answer the ops question.

edit: to Raptor, i think the 4chan analogy is pretty good and i agree with you on this, having all this 4chan memes around here is just boring and stupid. but then again its mostly the new guys who bring up stuff like "OVER 9000"

Well yeah, it's just better and all but the old school posters are being beaten down one by one by a stricter TL yo

I guess it's up to them to adhere or face the consequences I guess.. (Or then can try to be smarter now with regards to their "trolling" habits since it's mods are getting better and better at checking them out.

i'm sure admins are willing to tolerate a huge troll/flame post as long as it isn't frequent and doesn't get out of hand. i say it because i rarely post extremely retard blogs/posts and admins don't kick my ass for it, if it was something i did more often then it would've been a different story i'm 100% sure.

it's the motherfucking purge!!

hmm
doesn't have the same ring without rekrul ;(

i kinda disagree with MethodMan though.. imo the old days were more strict (im thinking like 2002-2004) but that's because the community was a lot smaller and if you were an idiot it was obvious pretty quickly

It's pretty chill now, as long as you aren't a total idiot. hell, even if you're a total idiot, oftentimes you can swing up to hundreds of posts before getting cut off.

You sure this isn't just because fana and CM looked invulnerable because they have 8000+ and 10000+ posts, respectively?

Much as I'm a fan of either one, you can't have "forum gods" who are allowed to do anything. It just confuses people.

You have to keep them in line.

I'm loving the 'stricter' moderation. Many cumulative problems with posters were previously not dealt with and I'm glad that they now are. Could just be a coincidence I suppose, but whatever it is, I like it.

Agreed. TL is one of the better moderated forums on the net. It is strict, but its necessary to run a civilized forum on what is otherwise the retarded internet.

The better the moderation the better the community, do we really need people like kdog stinking up the place?

Oh wow here's a recent one

Clasic was just banned by zatic.

That account was created on 2009-01-15 05:53:48 and had 1437 posts.

Reason: You have had enough warnings. I usually believe there is something good in everyone, even online. So I tried to find *something* redeeming in your posting history. What a disappointment you are.

Most bans I've ever seen on TL.net (I read the ban list almost every day, is my favorite thread) have been warranted. Really they mostly ban for straight up flames, derailings, and just all around insults. Light hearted stuff usually goes unpunished I would say.

I like the bans they give out. If this was a 'normal' forum there would be wayyyyyyyy more bans. I absolutely love the tolerance level of this site compared to any other major sites I've been a part of.

To be honest, I ask myself if I'm going to get banned for what I'm writing before ever hitting the post button.

Continuing to be honest, I will say that it's actually pretty hard to get banned from TL... but with more people signing up and posting every day, there is going to be more bans. More people = more stupidity/trolls = more bans for the trolls and regulars alike.

It's really not that hard, just don't act like a dipshit and you'll be fine. I'm not even a moderator and I can tell you that. I mean yeah we all have our fair share of stupid posts but any person with any semblance of common sense will know when they are going too far.

I've trolled tonnes over my time at Team Liquid (and never been banned). It's not about being in favour with admins, or some bizarre new change in mentality. It's about knowing where the line is. You DON'T ruin other people's threads just because you don't like the thread. That's bad overall for the community and you deserve your ban.

However, you ARE allowed to troll if it's both funny, and didn't ruin anything. There's also some case by case situations, where if you're trolling a friend, and it's basically all giggles afterward, no one cares.

Basically, if what you're doing could be seen as detrimental to the community and the site, don't do it. Nobody likes their thread being derailed by some idiot. Nobody wants to spend time making a great OP only to have some dumbass take attention away from it. If what you're doing isn't going to hurt anybody, and is probably going to make a lot of people laugh, it's okay.

TL isn't perfect, so sometimes you'll even see staff cross the line once in awhile, but usually this is the mentality and TL remains a pretty useful place because it controls itself.

Is the standard first ban 2 days? I was banned for flaming idrA (lol) for a week, and then was warned for saying the word retard. So just a heads up people dont call someone a retard.

Personally I like seeing the fact that every user is at risk of being banned and temp banned shows less favoritism imo. Also gives the community something to think about knowing that regardless of how you are and how well known you are, that you are not immune except for a select few

moderation has improved tons since we started. this is very natural - when tl.net was formed we pretty much had to start from scratch. it might appear like it has gotten stricter, and in one sense this is true. it is easier to be banned now than when we started. the difference is however, that now mostly all bans are temporary. before people would get perm banned and they'd have to start over with a new account, eliminating their ability to form a community personality. now people get banned for 2 days if its a minor offense - these can sometimes be handed out too quickly even now, but it's not really a big deal. ;p

Clasic was banned forever.

This has been the best weekend of my entire life, and to top it off, one of the worst posters in posting history was eliminated.

I believe a stricter TL is a better idea.

We have multiple brackets generated in advance. Relax . (Kennigit) I just simply do not understand how it can be the time to play can be 22nd at 9:30 pm PST / midnight the 23rd at the same time. (GGzerg)

Clicking on threads and reading them is a choice, not an obligation. If a member see a keyword in the title that would indicate that something they wouldn't want to see is in that thread, all he or she would have to do is avoid them. Why would anyone click into a thread that they would not appreciate and leave a comment that is unpleasant to read?

I dunno. I kinda agree with Mani for this one. Our main purpose is to be productive, seeing as how a new season of iCC is starting and SC2 is around the corner. And while trolling is as funny as ever (I used to be one, sorta), you kinda need an edge of seriousness.

That and flaming certain blogs leads to people getting offended.

I don't mean anything personal toward CharlieMurphy, but his posts haven't been as funny or brilliant as they used to be. And people like Day[9] are still as funny as ever despite their non-trolly moods.

So I'm afraid I can't agree with you on this one.

Edit: Sorry, I misread your blog. Rather I'm not disagreeing with you. This is just my opinion. Thanks. And sorry for misunderstanding if there was one.

Okay, I guess those were the wrong words. I guess I meant that they were actually laughable for the rest of us, and not just him. I do remember him being mentioned quite a couple times on the "Favorite Posters" blog thread.

is there a listing of what offense leads to what kind of ban/warning? of course, things are not always so objective. maybe as a general warning guideline (use common sense is the easiest one, ofc)

I don't thin officially, but technically speaking the Commandments do give a good guideline. And some things are obviously speaking more offensive than others. A silly troll blog post and calling a mod an asshole for no good reason are two different degrees of offense.

As a community grows bigger and bigger, rules should also get stricter. I find that natural. :o I might be new to TL, but one thing I know for sure is that more and more people are coming to TL community (I was one of them).

I've noticed that the mods usually allow you to troll as long as you aren't raging.

I mean, some of the most noticeable trolls are some of the mods.

Well, when they troll the OP is really made a stupid post or for all the fun. Some trolls are really offensive that's why most of the vets are being temp banned as of the moment.

Trolling is almost always offensive. I mean, you're making fun of someone, no matter how stupid they are and how they deserve to be derailed. It's not like the mods aren't offensive when they troll some people. It's usually just a matter of not crossing a line.

It's really vague though.

I think the recent spate of bans is mostly due to the fact that there is literally nothing serious to take up energy so we're getting more trolling.

It's like a kindergarten classroom. If there's not actually something to do, all hell breaks loose.
