I have to be honest I have been seeing a lot of commercials especially for the Army, Navy, Police force, and Fire department where I live. All those groups have one thing in common they allow ex-cons, alcoholics, former drug abusers, and other sorts in. But because I am diabetic I can't join or take part because apparently I am a liability.
Now for what it is worth, I would be a liability in some areas such as the Army. But the Navy?
When I drive by the recruiting office I have sometimes contemplated just walking in and asking if there was anyway I could sign up. But I am pretty sure I would know what the guy's answer would be.
Just god damnit, that is how I feel when I see those fucking commercials.
but honestly these kind of organizations are pretty strict with their recruiting criteria, they consider you as a "disabled" individual and just because of that won't let you in.
i mean honestly you can work for the navy as a navigator or something like that right? no real physical activity necessary.
anyways, they do this for your and other recruits' protection.
yes.... i'm not allowed to join any armed forces because I have ECZEMA... so they're pretty strict. and I know down the road, that might be the only thing I'd regret not pursuing.

Haha I was just about to post this! Hi 5 eczema brother! But, they have a fairly good reason for it, and look at it this way: you get exempted from any future draft!

Dude the army gives you benefits out the wazoo. Cheap food (I think the commissary sells groceries at cost), sales-tax-free shopping at the PX, a pension after 20 years, great banking (USAA), free health insurance (I think), and only a slightly greater chance of dying than the average population. Maybe less because of the free health insurance LOL.

If free health insurance = worse health care, your problem is fucking huge

it's kinda funny how i'm completely opposite. being singaporean, i'm to enroll in the army for two years. i would really like an excuse to get out of it though. one of my uncle's got out of NS through an ear infection (he wasn't trying to skip NS, they wouldn't let him in). unfortunately for me, the singaporean government became more strict and forces almost everyone to enroll now.

Suuuppp. Too bad you're a toss, otherwise I WOULD consider you a brotha .
If I could be guaranteed to not leave the country I would like to join the army. However, pretty much everyone new goes to Iraq or Afghanistan these days. That's a bit too much risk for me.

it's really not THAT risky when you consider how many people have gone and how many people have come home. but yeah it's still a risk. personally I'd never join the army. fighting in wars and shit is just something im completely opposed to. id like to think that humans are better than that (but they're obviously not, haha)
I think you're assuming to much. I'm also diabetic and more than familiar with what it entails for employment. I don't know why you'd want to be in the armed forces unless you are trying to run for office some day...but if you want to "serve your country" I recommend you do something a little more intellectually engaging...the fed is desperate for translators, foreign contractors, and there are all sorts of FBI / CIA jobs. Nothing but respect for the armed forces, but ppl on this forum tend to be smarter than the average joe, so I assume you are.
As for police and fire, half the cops in the country are diabetic (type 2) and there is the "American Disability Act", which I would check out if I were you. I'm fairly certain that simply having a disease can't keep you from getting in; this is why the medical examination is required, by law, to come after the written/oral/physical/background/polygraph/psyc evaluations in law enforcement.
Where I'm from, the requirement is that you have a hemoglobin A1C below 7.0 for a consistent amount of time.
I'm from SF, california, so you can't get into a fire department around here unless you are a black / hispanic / woman / lesbian anyway. But I imagine, in general, the diabetic thing is the same. It's legally considered discrimination if you're ineligible solely for being diabetic...but you have to prove you aren't a liability.
