You could get him an Australian Flag. Or the Flag of your country.

What type of packing? Is he a minimalist? Sending him a food package a few months down the road would be an amazing gesture. Will he be staying at hostels, outback, with people? Im guessing all of the above.. I know backpacking, give me more info and I can help. EDITED.

He probably has a water bottle. Swiss army knives are overrated for backpacking, when was the last time you used a corkscrew, scaled a fish, etc. while backpacking? The problem with being a backpacker is you don't want to carry extra weight that you'll never use, and you probably already have most of the essentials. So you have to upgrade to functionally superior equipment. Might try lexan cutlery, a commercial hobo stove, a titanium cup or pot, super lightweight wicking garments, a goretex type shell (breathable one way to moisture). If you're willing to splurge, you could try a golite backpack or high quality boots/trail running shoes or a high quality goose-feathered down sleeping bag.

Maybe even two books - one literature, something with an adventure or survival theme, and one on Australian life/culture/wildlife/tourism. id say either this (especially geography/culture one with landmarks and sites) or a nice jacket or pair of walking shoes

Give him something produces lots and lots of fire, because, since he's going to Australia, he's going to have to kill shit like this with it
