Figured I'd make this, because some people are too lazy to reply to the PM's I reply to them with.

lol none.
j/k. what major, what college (in ucsd), and where else did you get into? it all depends on you really, but if you can tell us some background info about yourself, then i think we can help you decide.
|
|
nowhere else yet, waiting on UCSB, Berkeley, and UCLA
coming from community college, want to do something with math, econ, and/or finance (got in as a math/econ major)
Why don't you like it, random?

i'm curious too 0.o why does it suck there
|
|
its ok as long as more people like me go the atmosphere of the school will change
|
wtf luke, i didn't know you were this bitter about ucsd ahaha
i personally think it all depends on you and your major. luke (random krn) and i pretty much have it the worst because we are both engineering majors (ratio of guys to girls are like 10:1 in our major classes). even so, it's not that bad at all. you'll meet a lot of people; some cool, some not so much... but it all depends on you.
at the same time, i can't completely disagree with luke either. there are some anti-social people here but where are they not? the city itself (la jolla) is not a college town (like westwood for ucla), so that might explain why some people are anti-social... i personally don't mind it because it's pretty relaxed (i went to HS in LA so i've been tired of crowded/busy cities).
so yea, you can take my word for it as well. i'm not some anti-social geek or nothing either. in fact, i am very much more awesome than luke in real life lol
to sum it up, i usually recommend ppl to come to ucsd because even though i am an engineering major which requires me to give up most of my social life, i've met a lot of cool ppl down the line and have had a genuinely nice experience here at ucsd thus far.

If you try to chat up people in bus, 4/5 people either thinks 1) you are lonely or 2) you are hitting on them. Fuck people, fucking loosen up. It's so bad that it's like unwritten rule that you shut up, and sit 1 seat away from everyone unless the bus is full or you have friends.
Antisocial fuckers man, I swear.
Oh and people are fucking stupid too.
To me UCSD is kind of a mixed bag. It's true that college is what you make of it, but the social atmosphere at our school is drab at best. The fact that we don't have a strong college sports program and no football team only adds to that. Luke is pretty much right that people here, in general, seem anti-social. To what extent is debatable.
Everything Luke said is 100% true. You will get weird looks from people if you say "hi" to them on the bus, and they will think you're trying to hit on them or you're lonely, but it makes me wonder if this is the case anywhere else. Maybe I've been here way too long and have no idea what normal social interaction with strangers is like. Kinda sad actually.
On a positive note, UCSD is a pretty good school for engineering. You'll meet motivated students and decent professors, and when you graduate you'll have earned a degree from a reputable institution. This generally leads to a well paying job in whatever engineering field you're from. If you're very serious about getting your diploma and a quality education without any bells and whistles, then you're probably a typical UCSD student.
I'd equate going to UCSD as about the same as going through an assembly line. People come in and they get churned out with a certain set of skills, there's nothing unique about the people, nor the process. If I could go back in time, I'd probably have chosen another school to go to for my undergraduate degree.
The sad thing is that while the campus (and its inhabitants) is boring, San Diego as a city is amazing. La Jolla is absolutely beautiful, and there's a lot of things you can do down here. I'd definitely live here; but I wouldn't go to school here. (Not UCSD anyway.)
On a final note, girls at our school are generally unattractive; just my personal opinion anyway.

Whoa, it's xeris_sheng! Hai.
I agree with you that UCSD girls as a whole are below average, but there are some cute ones as well. You just gotta know where to look.
I disagree with you about going to UCSD being like going through an assembly line though. If you say it like that, is it supposed to be different at other schools? Would it have been different if I pursued education at Berkeley? Fill me in please... Personally, I've never considered going to UCSD in that way during my four years here.
Happy finals

Of course, you can. You'll meet A LOT of people living on campus and also in your general education/ lower division classes. You won't really be taking only your major classes, so you'll be fine for a while. Also, good job on picking warren. That's the best choice if you are an engineering major. So, we have a CSL team and have weekly practice on iccup. We sometimes have a team meet-up along with diggity.

I really like UCSD... it's just a tough life if you are in Revelle as a non-science major. UCSD's Political Science program is really awesome!

revelle is the campus I walk across to get to lab! I always figured they were an artsy college or something though because of the theater being there and because during orientation we watched a bunch of the undergrads learn some sort of group dance thing. dunno what that was about but it was pretty fun to watch.

I can't find transfer GE's for Warren, but I think if you finish IGETC you're good right? I'd just rather take major-related electives than take writing classes or foreign culture classes or whatever.

Hey guys, sorry for the intrusion. But I am just making a shout out to people in San Diego who go to GCCCD. I've been aware of the C.StarLeague (http://www.cstarleague.com/league) for a while and thought it sad that Gmont isnt there. If we can get together 5 people for the next tournament, maybe we could register and compete. So... if anyone here fits the bill. Let me know yeh? We could give UCSD some good friendly competition
Thank you.

Check out Carnegie Mellon's team. They have like 12 players over 1200 lol. Dalhousie's got like 6 players over 1600 also I think. (Valkyrie's still stacked)

Hey, I'm a UCSD student. Wondering if anyone would want to throw a GSL Season 2 Finals party.
I know we had it for the MSL Finals a couple months ago that I went to and that UCSD's Starcraft team helped organize it. GSL Season 2 Finals are coming up on Friday Night/Saturday Morning, so I'm wondering if anyone on UCSD's Starcraft team would be interested in maybe a GSL Season 2 Finals party. I'd like to help arrange one but I have no idea where to start so I thought I would contact you guys first. I also sent an e-mail to duran.parsi@gmail.com with this message. Hope to hear from you guys soon.

I don't understand lol, 1400-1500 seems low to me. Every time I play I feel like I play terrible, so I am just surprised that its good enough to play on a team..
|
I'm around 1800-1900 but ece owns me too much to join the team

Ouch...yeah I'm a computer science major so I have tons of free time

Tbh I would prefer this over the opposite.
|
No theres both. Here's my tentative map list for SCBW:
(4)-Fighting Spirit (2)-Match Point (2)-Polaris Rhapsody (4)-Grand Line (3)-Aztec
First place prize for BW: $200, Second $50 First place prize for SC2: $400, Second $100 That's how prizes will work this year
|
Hey about how many people participated last year in bw?
Could we remove aztec for outsider?
|
outsider is kind of outdated but okay... ill think about it
|
whoa i would like to participate in the SC:BW tournament!
|
can people play in both ?

Prize money? I got to play in both then. Was there prize money last year?
|
yeah people can play in both.
would you rather have SC2 + SCBW run at the same time or at different times? would you rather have a 1 day tournament or a 2 day tournament?
|
Different times (consecutively), 1 day each unless they're really huge.

Not sure where I could ask this but I thought it'd be appropriate here:
When is UCSD's winter's games fest this year? I was curious cause I wanted to organize a LAN during winter quarter for Irvine (only an intention at this point) and I don't want it to interfere with UCSD's LAN. Ideally, we'd have players commuting to both LAN events.

Where did you guys hold this last year? Does everyone bring their own computer?
Excited o.o

im assuming starcraft 2 is going to be huge this year so im running it across two days 1/22-23
SC1 im going to put on day 2 exclusively.
going to be single elimination bracket unless we have adequate room + space.
SC2 will be in multipurpose room day 1, PC ballroom east day 2
SC1 will be PC ballroom east day 2.
mapset: (4)-Fighting Spirit (2)-Match Point (2)-Polaris Rhapsody (4)-Grand Line (3)-Aztec
not sure about sc2 yet, but probably going to make it: lost temple scrap station steppes of war metalopolis blistering sands/xelnaga caverns...not sure yet
will post official tournament thread soon once i get all the details ironed out.
GET HYPE 1/22-23 FREE TOURNEY with $500 grand prize :D

what if i put desert oasis LOL
EDIT: i was thinking of putting another 4P map instead of 2 actually... scrap + steppes gives enough 2P imo
