So I dropped my laptop as I was pulling it out of my backpack and it fell with the display side on the floor. When I booted it, this came up:
I'm pretty sure the right side is busted and I need to replace the screen. It's an HP dv2416 and there is no way I'm shelling out $400 dollars for HP to fix it. It's also only about a 1.5 years old.
Right now I'm looking for the cheapest place (that's not fishy) I can buy a new screen and I found this:
http://www.screencountry.com/index.php?section=products&model=PAVILION DV2000&brand=HP-Compaq&size=
Has this ever happened to any of you guys? Any place cheaper I can get a decent display?
Thanks

Ja, happened to me a few years back. My screen busted as well somehow. Luckily my warranty hadn't expired yet so I was able to send mine in and get it fixed.
As for buying a new screen, I guess you could search for the cheapest online, although I'd find it rather hard to trust some websites. Maybe you could take it into some local electronics store for a free diagnosis and maybe they can help you with what you need to do in order to fix it.

I used to work in IT, and in my opinion, it's a huge hassle to get new screens, and they're expensive. Like Roffles said, if it's not the original supplier, it gets more sketchy. You may be better off either taking to a store, or using this event as an excuse to get a new (non-HP) laptop! (jokes)

Buying a screen off Ebay is the cheapest way to fix it. If you have someone fix it for you, you'll end up paying a lot more money. You might as well buy a new laptop if you pay $400 to fix it.

Really? I thought that they would only replace your screen if you had accidental damage insurance.

omg never saw that... i hope its because of display yes!

I did the same thing to my mac. Turns out that the screen costs almost as much as the laptop itself. I would take the 400 deal b/c that's quite cheap for a new screen and is reliable. Either that or don't use the laptop anymore/buy a new one.
Btw, I don't even use my mac anymore b/c I didn't bother to fix it.

Sorry to let you down but these sites kinda look shady IMO and if u want a gauranteed service i think that the original manufacturer is the only place that will/can

Well the problem could be because of the video cable and/or invertor being damaged. I'm pretty sure it is the display because on the left side everything is the same as before. Also, when the laptop is turned off, you can see the black lines in the display hinting that the LCD crystals are probably crushed.
RaGe, from what I've read, replacing the screen is not all that hard and that is really why I don't want to pay for labor. I'll call HP and ask them where they purchase the screens from and possibly where I can buy it whole sale (fat chance knowing HP).
Otherwise, I'm going to go ahead and give screendisplay.com a try. It's about $100 and while I'm not exactly making bank, it's cheap enough that I'll take a chance.
