First off, I am Asian, and so are my parents. However, they are different from other Asian parents. My dad, doesn't like it when i play computer games but unlike other parents, they let me play games, no limit either. I am a lucky guy, I was always the first person to get new consoles, I was the one playing games all the time while my friends had a limit or were secretly playing.

But only recently, have i realized how lucky i was. I am now a determined man. My parents will let me go to Blizzcon, next summer if I can get into a university that i want to. And its not hard either since I will only be going into Nursing which my parents are more than happy about. Also, they bought me a brand new 2010 Mazda 3 this summer and, to top it off, my father said, that he will buy me a Netbook (since my sister had too much trouble with a laptop) and a very good computer for... gaming. I have decided to repay my parents by not playing games at all until the university results come out.

They never made me live in a prison life (like many of you asian TLers live), which was the reason why we left Korea in the first place. And now by choice, I have made a decision not to play games for the time. People, this method of "freedom" works.

That's cool that your parents are so nice but don't feel like you have the need to punish yourself. If you want to play games and you have the free time go right ahead. But since your resolve is to better your studies more power to you.

I don't think freedom falls under bribery+reverse psychology.
Besides that. Good luck!

That sounds like a fairly good trade. But if you enjoy gaming, it's not like you're never going to have free time.
Never attribute to malice that which can be adequately explained by stupidity.

Why don't you 'repay' them by getting a job so they aren't paying for anything. That sounds a bit more like the definition of repaying.

I think it's a good idea, to show your parents that you are REALLY focused on school. I could never do anything like that but I'm glad that you are able to!

Instead of declaring 0 gaming you might want to just impose some strict limits (such as friday/sat night only?) so you play much less than you otherwise would. I don't think it's necessary to cut it out 100% and you might be more likely to crack if you are too limiting.

Micronesia speaks the truth here. I believe that if your sanctions are too harsh, then the more likely you are to tempt yourself. However, if you know in the back of your head that "Oh, I've got a small window on Saturday to play", then the likelihood of you being tempted to play goes way down.

It's the same thing with illegal stuff. The more illegal it is, the more tempted people are to do it. Same with children. The more you tell them to not do something, the more they wanna do it.
God Bless

wow your parents seem really nice and understanding

good that you're not just taking advantage of it. good that you realized what's good on your own

I'm sure your parents would be very happy and proud of your decision.

It's something non-Asian families can't really relate to. This is really the best way to "repay" Asian parents. A lot of Asian parents have a sacrifice-themselves + immigrant mind set and their goal in life is to see their children succeed. They dream of the days when their children won't have to work at laundromat / do menial labor jobs / live a secluded life having flown in straight from Korea, etc, etc. The best way to repay them would be to succeed.

Sounds like a plan, you seem to grasp the concept of do what you want but understand what your parents did for you, which a lot of kids don't get.
Get it by your hands...

I'm not sure how denying yourself your own pleasures repays anyone, Do what the others say and get a job and pay for all or some of the computer yourself.
Hell is other people.

You have really nice parents. And I agree that not playing games is not really repaying your parents. Just remember them when you grow up.
