Hey guys. I am currently using AirTran's inflight internet service with my laptop, so I thought I'd share my experience.
The cost is $6.00 for the entire flight regardless of length of flight (AirTran is domestic US). The connection is pretty fast compared to what I was expecting. Using some tests at DSLreports, I got 1-2 Mbps download and 200 kbps upload. So basically I can stream videos and pretty much do stuff I would normally do at home.
So far I haven't noticed any change in internet speed along the flight path but I'll update this post if anything bad happens (doubt it though).
IMO it was worth the 6 bucks to keep me from being bored for this 5 hour flight. I just have to keep power settings on my laptop really conservative to last the whole fligt :O

$6.00???? THATS IT? woah... lucky...
|
hey! what's your latency up there^^
|
Would be so much more useful if they had outlets somewhere close to the seats. Does anyone know of an airline that does happen to have convenient outlets on non-first/business class?
|
too bad iCCup is down right now for you
|
Wow that's pretty cool, I've always wondered how you can get internet service up in a plane. Does anybody know if there is any other way besides what the op is doing?
|
whoa, sc on a plane.
*picks up jaw*

Try as hard as I might, I would never be able to get my laptop run on batteries for five hours T_T Where ya goin'?
|
I can't believe planes now have wifi internet on them, but they won't give you a socket to plug in a laptop.

ROFL it would be hilarious if I could iCCup right now. I think the APM would piss off my fellow planegoers though.
I'm trying hard, but my battery is definitely not going to last 5 hours, My screen brightness is all the way down and I set CPU to 30% of max speed (lol), but I think I'll only get 3 hours out of this. Playing videos seems to drain battery faster.
This plane doesn't have a power socket, but I've been on a different plane that had some weird power outlet (not the standard three prong one), I would've needed some sort of adapter to use the pwoer there.
edit: @ Saracen: I'm going back to Caltech!

I was on a flight last year that had a socket for every seat. Don't know which plane, but it was on some cathay pacific flight to hong kong. Made the 15 hr flight bearable with my laptop.

Some planes provide methods for charging. In my experience, they only provide those car charger outlets, and I don't have a converter.

Dude, you could be the first person ever to play Starcraft online from a plane. You have to do it.

UPDATE: currently playing PvZ on US East in windowed mode with touchpad

I agree with motbob -- you simply have to play. At least you have the best honest excuse ever uttered by man if you lose: "I'm at 30,000 feet, my screen is at 20% brightness, people are nudging my seat, and my mouse is in another dude's crotch."

ROFL no I just got owned by some noob haha. GG

Would the change in altitude change your movements and increase/decrease your apm? just a random thought
|
I've took a dump while rolling a joint in an airplane's WC while watching random youtube stuff on my iphone. I must admit I was tempted to light it up but I didn't want no trouble.

Fucking awesome. Who needs snakes on a plane when you've got sc on a plane?
|
Haha okay this was pretty fun. Plane lands in 25 minutes so I have to shut this off now.

Wow that's gonna be an experience. Now whenever someone is complaining about uncomfortable playng conditions you can tell them about playing on a plane! How do you play sc with a touchpad? O.o

Nice, you're really lucky that it was only $6.
But I'm not on a plane. I'm on a boat.
