Ok, recently my girlfriend came into a stump. She is going to a Private University in Ft. Lauderdale, FL called Nova Southeastern University. I was wondering if there's a Board for private Universities. Her situation is that she had a class that she was about to fail or did fail but not because she failed on purpose. She was in a very delicate situation where it did not allow her to attend classes. She had plenty of documentation to prove for this case.
The professor flunked her but she tried to drop the class before the grade went in. She did a student action form, which basically is a form explaining why the class should be dropped. The form went through and she was able to keep going to school. Today she received a letter saying all of her fall classes were dropped for flunking the Summer 09 class that she had dropped before she "flunked" it. Now she is put into academic suspension because of it.
So yea, basically the question is if you guys that live in FL or are very good at finding things on the internet to help me out. I just need a Board or if there is one to Private Universities. Another thing, the teacher was sentenced to bed rest. She wasn't suppose to be teaching but the school kept allowing her to teach.

Uhh... I'm not sure I quite understand the situation - your girlfriend failed/almost failed a class and withdrew... which let her keep going to school for that semester, or for the following semester as well? And then she got suspended for withdrawing from the class?
There isn't any sort of state board that private universities answer to; the best thing you can do is do research on the suspension process by the individual school. There should be some sort of academic standing committee that decides what happens with every student. If the school has a class dean system then it'd be a good idea to get in touch with them. Of course, it should be your girlfriend who gets in touch with them, since it shows that she's taking initiative to stay in school.

I doubt there is anything to do; you have to live with the consequences of your mistakes in life. It sounds like a situation which was completely her fault anyway. There's no excuse for her not dealing with it before he had already assigned grades anyway... when she realized she had some situation (whatever that was), she should've dealt with it then.

Ok sorry let me make it clearer.
She was attending a class but had to stop attending it due to certain situations that happened in her life. So she tried to drop the class before the teacher failed her. If she would have failed, she wouldn't be able to attend for the next semester or finish the current one. She couldn't drop it in time, so then that's where the student action form came in. The action form dropped her from the class, so she wouldn't get suspended from the school for the next semester. Well the teacher still failed her as if the action form was never in placed and she got suspended till the following semester.
So there isn't any board at all? She has tried to get into contact with the class dean but he's supposedly "always" busy.

Well she tried to drop the class before she would had failed it, but couldn't as the day to drop it was the week before this started to happen. She had all documentation for all her absences and even let the teacher know what was going on.

They ignored her circumstances because the 'situation' was probably not good enough a reason for not attending. I thought this seemed pretty obvious from this whole thing, you're not gonna get out of this just by going over everyone's heads.

She went through some sickness phase that caused some thing in her stomach. I don't remember exactly what it was, but she wasn't allowed to leave the house kind of deal. Then she went through a depression phase during the sickness because of being cooped up for like 3 weeks.

What kind of retarded school does she attend? If she failed due to sickness there's absolutely no way they can fail her for that.
Instead of trying to drop the class can't she retake it or something.

Okay - what kind of situations are these? Physical injuries? Psychological issues? If it's for any significant health issue then you might have a case.
You should start by looking into what kinds of conditions and terms that the student action form comes with. If she can't get in contact with the class dean at least she should start by going to her advisor to see what options she has; in addition they might be able to set a meeting up for her.
There should be some sort of board you can appeal to, but because it's a private university they can run things the way they want to. After looking into the school, it seems that each of their colleges has different regulations. I don't know but it's retarded. She was going to re take it during the fall semester but that's the thing. The teacher put it in as she failed it and it suspended her for the next semester. Even though she already dropped it.

Well she has tried her dean and advisers and they have told her everything will be fine, under control, but still this happened. They told her if her classes weren't dropped by two weeks prior of the new semester starting, she was ok. But that wasn't that case. Her clom all of your asses dropped August 20th. Her classes start this monday.
The letter states:
Our records show that you have failed to maintain satisfactory academic progress during Summer 2009. Therefor, I regret to inform you that you are being suspended from Nova Southeastern University for the Fall 2009 and Winter 2010 Semesters. You have been dropped from all of your Fall 2009 courses.
The letter dates Aug 20th like I said and she filed the action report like a month and a half before this happened and was approved about a month ago.

Well then - there's not much she can do besides keep fighting, which includes bothering her dean/advisors, etc. Again it might be helpful to look into all the documents you can find to see if you can get a handle on the situation. This sounds like just a mistake they made - has she tried to get in contact with the professor that failed her?

OH YEA, that teacher is a total bitch. She's senile, and old. She's not even suppose to be teaching.

I don't know you, but I am getting the tone from you that you believe she has done NOTHING wrong.
When you miss a class, it is your responsibility to make sure the teacher is aware right away. If it was after the normal drop date, as I am unsure of how private universities do this, they will most likely tell you "Sorry, try again later."
I understand she may have been sick, but you must look at it from the point of the school, and at least accept a little bit of the responsibility.

If she can prove all you said it true then take it to the registrar or guidance offices or whatever and get it sorted out.
I'm not sure why you're asking us here when the best place to go is through official means...
MOST univs will want to help out their students especially is mistakes have been made.

Well the purpose of this was to find out if there's a board for private schools. I already know the best option is the adminstration, but the thing is, they barely help.

gf gets sick with "some stomach thing" and can't leave the house for 3 weeks. Was this not important enough in your life to remember what happened to her within the last few weeks?
gf files form to be dropped and accepted
teacher fails her (is it even possible to fail someone not on your roster any more?)
dropped for fall
additional information: teacher is a total bitch who is senile and should not be teaching
