Hey yo~

Im interested in starting longboarding. My work load will be reduced at work soon so i'll be working only 2 days a week. i figured a cool thing to do would be to learn how to long board.

I've found a few aussie sites that sell them, so im investigating now on a board to purchase.

I have no interest and doing tricks and shit, just transportation + fun (going fast?!?!), so i can get around my town/the city where i work.

So does anybody on tl longboard? I'd greatly appreciate advice on board to buy, and maybe just some general tips/what ever that you can offer.

Don't lay down on it while going down an extremely long, steep, gravel road.

i have a longboard. its so fun carving around unlike a regular skateboard that dont turn very sharply. i like the longboards cuz theyre more stable for nubs who cant hang on a real skateboard. first thing u wana do is figure out what you're gona do. so we see ur just gona use it for transport. so i suggest getting a cheap longboard. the minimum for a complete assembled longboard on the net is like 100$.

this ones very popular at my school

the trademark of longboards is not only that they are long, but they have huge wheels. i suggest getting at least a board with 70mm wheels. anything less than that is cool too but if you wana get around faster and run over things then get bigger wheels. the longer and wider the board the more stable it is, but wider the turn. but you can loosen the trucks to make it turn sharper. i'm not an expert on longboards. ive only had my board for less than a year. but thats what i got from my experience. i have a sector 9 board.

theyre pretty sick. they can go faster than regular skateboards and they can run over things like medium sized twigs without losing very much speed. also if you get into it, racing down hill can be hella fun and exhilarating.

how come u decided longboarding than skateboarding? is it much different? i ve never seen a longboard in Greece yet. I used to do roller-blading and I always liked it more than skateboarding, same with snowboard and ski, snowboard>ski.

i have no interest in doing tricks. i wanted to learn, and to be able to skate from one place to the other in my shitty little town or skate around the suburb where i work.

Plus its learning a new skill, can't be too bad eh.

My question was why choose longboarding since skateboarding is more popular.

Probably because longboards are less trick oriented and more speed + handling based. They are looks cooler IMO and I like the fact that they are less popular. But that's just me.

maybe because with a longboard you can carelessly skate at night downhill and skate over a 1cm stone without actually falling down and breaking your right arm + Show Spoiler +

I am wondering can you actually at least ollie with a longboard? Because I can see that for simply skating from A to B it is better than a skateboard but it would be quite annoying if you always had to get off your longboard to get up a curb.

It's easy enough to ride a longboard off a curb, much like a regular skateboard. And actually, there are ways to ride up on a curb, but you can do only at certain speeds, not too slow, and not too fast. What you do, or I do (no idea if I do it the right way), is spread your legs out, so that your back foot is more or less on the tail and your front foot is over the front truck/wheels. Then lift up the front as if you were gonna do a manual right before to come up to the curb. Then the front wheels go on top of the curb. The momentum will keep the board going when it's slanted back. Then put all your weight on the front side to help pull the back wheels onto the curb. But obviously, this would be harder to control if you were going too fast. And if you were going to slow, you just wouldn't have the momentum to ride it up the curb.

My advice to learning to ride it is: when you're starting out, try to do it in a wide open area/not too steep of a hill and where there are relatively few cars. It's much easier than learning to skate on a regular skate board, because it's easier to balance on it.

As for brands, Arbor is pretty good:

I tried sector 9's once, but personally didn't like the feel. And there's this other one that's made of bamboo, but those are expensive. Forgot the name.
