a reoccuring theme for me is dreams about escaping from something
1. at the beach (my old beach). waves get bigger and bigger coming up the beach until they are massive tidal waves one after another crashing over the embankments and enveloping the land behind. im running from them, up the hill thru the buildings and landscape etc.
2. some sort of invisible monster/creature, city senario
3. last night i had an original one. was in city senario with large open streets and tall square buildings like paris (or was it london). a lightning storm was in the distance and people were afraid that the lightning would hit them even though the giant buildings were all around.
i didn't worry, until i saw this massive lightning bolt come very gradually out of the storm, shooting down first slowly then increasingly quickly, as if it had locked onto a targetted person at the corner of my street. it zapped her and she died, screaming and charred.
i started to run to the end of the wide street (bordered by tall buildings). i could hear the whoosh as a 2nd bolt locked onto me and started to increasingly speed towards me. at the last second i rounded the corner of the building and escaped the bolt. however...there was nowhere to hide here, no open shops/doorways to enter to safety.
4. not sure if i dream/dreamt it, but reoccuring "fantasy" of mine is escaping a nuclear bomb blast/war by fleeing into a sophisticated underground vault (think t3 or fallout3).
i "explain" these themes as being something my body/mind simply enjoys experiencing because they are simply "thrilling" experiences. like going on a rollercoaster.
what reoccuring dreams or themes of dreams do you remember? how do you explain them? i had many more but haven't had them in the past 1/2 years so have faded from my active memory.

I have a theory about some of the really common ones. Basically, it's that all that matters in dreams is the present. If your mind suddenly notices something that doesn't make sense or that it needs to change, the dream will alter to fit it in; it doesn't matter whether it fits with what went before. So:
1) Flying/falling: the mind suddenly realizes that it is in a horizontal position, and tries to account for that, one way or the other.
2) Suddenly finding oneself without clothes: people often sleep with much lighter/less clothing than they walk around with in the day; the mind suddenly notices this fact, and inserts it into the dream.
3) Being suddenly unable to move: well, your movement really is pretty restricted when lying in bed, surrounded by blankets. The mind suddenly notices, etc.
Just a theory. Anyway, sorry, it was a bit off-topic from your blog, but it does address the question you raised.

I've been having the same recurring dream for the past year now.
I'm the cafeteria of my old school. Sometimes there's real food in the line, sometimes its weird shit like giant cupcakes, but it doesn't really matter. I pick up some food and put it on my tray, than go to the lunch lady. I realize then that I don't have any money, and I try to convince the lunch lady that I'm supposed to get free lunch. That doesn't work, so I start looking to the people around me, asking somebody or anybody for a nickel or a dime. There is never any response - people just stare at me. Then I run out of the cafeteria, somewhere very far away. I'm crying because I won't be able to eat lunch.

Well it's expected that dreams are based on what you've experienced recently, some people suggest it's your brain trying to sort stuff out. I usually find dreams fun, even if I'm being hurt or they're about my whole family dying. The only frightening one I have is the same one I get every time I have a fever. It's really hard to describe what the dream is about (especially since I haven't had it in ages, but I'll try).

It's a dark and cold winter and I'm sitting in the living room, I hear the sounds of bombs landing closer and closer. I run upstairs and see strangers sitting under the covers in a dimly lit room, discussing how elastic the brain is. One of them says he'll do a demonstration as he looks towards me, suddenly my vision keeps zooming inwards and outwards, I could see something really far away as if it was right in front of my eyes. A man starts laughing happily and the room explodes. The weirdest thing is that this scene is always set in an old house I lived in before moving twice.
Then all of a sudden I'm looking at a map of what appears to be Russia, the room is completely white and I can't see the walls or floor. There's a man explaining that I'll be going here (points near Poland) which is only a short train journey from the rest of my family (points near Mongolia). When I try to ask what's going on and how that's not a short distance at all, the super-zooming vision comes back. But this time the man is being stretched vertically and he starts laughing maniacally.
After some more crazy visuals I find myself back at the house, in the room with the strange people. Looking out the shattered window I see a large smouldering crater and the silhouettes of planes in the distance. The door bursts open and a large crowd of people stampede in, cheering and waving their arms about. They lift me up and parade around the house.
I first had this dream around 7 years old. I don't have a clue how to explain it, I was probably just really dizzy from the fever.
Has anyone ever woken up from a dream, then gone back to sleep and have people in the dream say "welcome back".

Without me controlling them, biting my jaws together harder and harder until my teeth shatter. Only get it when I'm under a lot of stress.

I recently went to hooters. Our waitress was very...developed. I proceeded to have a dream of a sexual nature featuring her the following night. I hope it recurs, a lot.

I don't think I've ever had a dream that's reoccured. In fact for most of my life I've either not dreamt at all or just been completely unable to remember them(not just details of the dream etc. just actually whether I had one or not).
