How could this be? Clearly the old men and super buff dudes have lost their V-card to a beautiful woman, right?
Well it turns out in korean culture this is called manner hand. According to khaldor in this video it is bad etiquette to show PDA (public display of affection). As it often results in anger and resentment from the surrounding people. And then bam! Kotaku releases this article and it all makes sense.
Women, it seems, appreciate the "nice guy" gesture, while men probably don't give it much thought.
By that same token, when celebs in Korea don't mind their manner hand, people tend to notice that, too! Those moments are even called "bad hand." So bad.
But why does manner hand exist and why is it more of a thing recently? Tipster Sang thinks it might be because Korean stars are wearing skimpier outfits, which makes sense to me. Also, traditionally people in Asia are less touchy-feely than Westerners with friends and colleagues, so that's why celebs might be pulling hover hands. Or perhaps, people just want to be respectful and polite.

Many of these individuals who are using the manner hand are incredibly good-looking, famous, and wealthy. They are not your stereotypical "hover hand virgins." But they do have good manners, it seems. Good manner hands.

if its someone you are comfortable with putting your arm around then go for it, i dont think it shows disrespect to people around. Now if you dont think the person would appreciate you touching them, or if you aren't comfortable doing that, then just don't. Even better why bother doing the motion of putting your arm around her just take a normal picture.

I can understand why asian culture would find it more mannered and more respectable to let it hover.
But in western culture ? Heeh... Just do it if you feel like it. If she say something after, well then you know. Most girls won't get offended for that

I've manner handed in a couple photos before. Sometimes when someone takes a picture with you and they put their arm around you first, it feels natural to put your arm around them as well, but if they have like a big sweat stain on their back or something, I kinda don't wanna make too much contact, so I'm hoping that I can just leave my arm hovering, and the camera angle won't catch it.

While there are certainly cultural differences, to me its not PDA if you put your hand on someone's waist or shoulder. There is a reason that in ballroom dance the man puts his hand on the woman's waist, that is to take the lead, and it has nothing to do with affection or sexuality. Granted that taking a picture is different but in my experience the hover hand is more awkward than mannered, and I think most women I know would agree.

I'd never hover hand even if it was my best friend's girlfriend. It's a completely normal thing to do in those circumstance and I'm a touchy person. Only feels awkward to the other person if it's awkward to you.

If I touch you or let you touch me, then I really like you.
I wouldn't do some weird hover hand thing though, I would pose a different way, then again I would probably just end up looking weirder. But I don't really care :D
