From what I understand, Fnatic distinguishes between those who are paid (thus, 'professional'), and those who aren't. I'm guessing there are additional benefits to academy, such as hardware, travel expenses, and there's the possibility of getting promoted to professional, like Harstem and Luvsic.

Don't know but that sounds like a B-Team to me. In my opinion, "Academy" implies that the players are any of those things:
But it seems that nowadays teams use it as a misnomer and a fresh label for their B-teams.

Not about investing. If a player can join an well established team and get there name out faster then they could with a unknown team then they should. This list of teams (at least what i can think of) that would help fast track a players career, EU has more teams.

What I mean is, a lot of American teams have 'Academies' and this is where most NA players are found. Clarity, Quantic and EG all have money to invest in some American talent if they went lighter on Koreans in my opinion. I'm not even talking about up and coming players, I'm talking about some of the best players in NA, who ended up on European teams. (I'm assuming the reason why an American player ends up on a European team is either because he receives no offers from American teams, or because they do not offer as much)..Scarlett is on Acer, Illusion is on mouz, and goswser is on Millenium. coL have players on their main team who I doubt have tried to actually compete.

Root is a good example of a NA team that can do this, but not too many others at this time can do the same things Root can. It takes time and connections. Again. I am happy for Kitty. Thanks for the shout out! <3
