Not exactly a secret, but finally it's official, American Protoss player Zifeng 'hellokitty' Wang has joined the Fnatic Academy. He has made a name for himself recently, after being invited into WCS America Premier (for having placed 5-8th in WCS USA and 17-24 in the Continental), and most notably defeating (T)Heart, but losing against (T)XY.

He also qualified for ShoutCraft America, and placed 5-8th, defeating EG's (Z)Suppy twice.

His next stop is trying to qualify for Premier through the Challenger Groups.

Total Earnings: $1,575

Fnatic lineup:

Professional
(P)Harstem
(P)NightEnD
(T)Naama
(P)SaSe

Academy
(P)Pink
(Z)Zanster
(Z)Miniraser
(P)Hellokitty

So, is "Academy" the new term for "B-Team" or is there any difference?

EDIT: Gratz hellokitty!

From what I understand, Fnatic distinguishes between those who are paid (thus, 'professional'), and those who aren't. I'm guessing there are additional benefits to academy, such as hardware, travel expenses, and there's the possibility of getting promoted to professional, like Harstem and Luvsic.

From the reactions I assume hellokitty killed a guy.

Or played a playstyle people didn't like you know same thing.

Don't know but that sounds like a B-Team to me. In my opinion, "Academy" implies that the players are any of those things:
  • very young
  • learn towards a common, preset goal (e.g. be in WCS PL in a year)
  • benefit from learning from the pro squad or a coach
  • are in a teamhouse environment or otherwise physically close

But it seems that nowadays teams use it as a misnomer and a fresh label for their B-teams.

I believe its more of a exposure issue we have with NA teams. Not about investing. If a player can join an well established team and get there name out faster then they could with a unknown team then they should.

This list of teams (at least what i can think of) that would help fast track a players career, EU has more teams.

What I mean is, a lot of American teams have 'Academies' and this is where most NA players are found. Clarity, Quantic and EG all have money to invest in some American talent if they went lighter on Koreans in my opinion. I'm not even talking about up and coming players, I'm talking about some of the best players in NA, who ended up on European teams. (I'm assuming the reason why an American player ends up on a European team is either because he receives no offers from American teams, or because they do not offer as much)..Scarlett is on Acer, Illusion is on mouz, and goswser is on Millenium. coL have players on their main team who I doubt have tried to actually compete.

I would say Clarity is doing a great job currently helping out the Na talent. But for Quantic, EG, they are in it to win and make money so they would only need to go for the top rank players. But you cant just jump to these teams, players need to work there way up to get onto teams that would help them excel. And as of now EU teams have the ability to help players excel better then the NA teams.
Root is a good example of a NA team that can do this, but not too many others at this time can do the same things Root can. It takes time and connections.

Again. I am happy for Kitty. Thanks for the shout out! <3

It's the "academy" part that I have issue with, not with where the team is based. I simply think that HelloKitty is deserving of a place on the A team given that he's one of the best NA players right now.

What I meant was, Fnatic said they were focusing on the European scene, but they had the opportunity of picking up a good American player - they got away with putting him on their Academy (thus, I assume, no salary), is because the big American teams did not even try to pick him up and offer him a salary.

But yeah, hellokitty is probably better than most players on Fnatic's professional roster atm, except for SaSe and perhaps Harstem.

I'll jump in on the academy discussion. I sincerely hope that being on the acadedmy is a way to get help from players on the professional roster. Maybe a player like HelloKitty already has practicing partners on Harstem level but I really thought academy meant that you would get a chance to discuss strategy and get personal help from the professionals.

unlikely, his playstyle is the exact opposite of what you want in practice games.

Most games he does macro. He does have some very strong all in builds that would be great to be able to practice against.

Teams that have a image such as EG / Quantic in that retrospect when you look at their entirety (Multi-gaming, International Competitors and have a huge sponsorship image to maintain), they are of course going to be "in it to win it". They have to do whatever they have to do in the means necessary, and if that means popping thousands of dollars on one player, they're going to do it.

Best of luck to Kitty.
