Let's decide this now because I am sure that we will have lots of back and forth in the next week with the Blizzard Cup coming in the next week. So, we do we consider the winner of this event a GSL champion, or do we consider the winner a special event champion such as Arena of Legends?

Remember, the Super Tournament and World Championship are considered GSL titles while the Arena of Legends tournaments have not been counted. MarineKing asked when the World Championship was going on if it was a special event or an actual GSL championship, and he was told it was the real deal...then proceeded to get silver to MVP.

Positives on why we should consider it a GSL championship:

₩40 000 000 - That is only 10,000,000 under the usual Code S championship and actually 10,000,000 more than the World Championship

Ten champions will play in the tournament. Every single player will have won a major tournament in the past year.

Negatives on why we shouldn't consider it a GSL championship:

Only ten players. The smallest GSL championship was the World Championship which had sixteen. Every other GSL has had either 32 participants or 64.

It's only five days long. Even the World Championship had more days of competition and the usual Code S/Super Tournament season runs for four weeks or above.

So, what say you, Team Liquid community member? Do we consider the Blizzard Cup champion apart of the seven who have a GSL title, or do we put them alongside MKP as a special event winner?

Poll: Blizzard Cup: GSL title or Special Event title?

Special Event champion (Arena of Legends) (98)

65%

GSL champion (Code S, World Championship, Super Tournament) (52)

35%

150 total votes

Your vote: Blizzard Cup: GSL title or Special Event title?

(Vote): GSL champion (Code S, World Championship, Super Tournament)
(Vote): Special Event champion (Arena of Legends)

This has the best players that have proven themselves at individual tournaments. It will be a great best of the best show down.

My money is on MMA or Nestea.

A GSL champion is someone who can beat the rest of the field. Coming out on top of 32 of the best players from the starting point is what big tournaments are all about. This has a pool of 10 players, and honestly it doesn't mean that much to me. How is this different from AOL 1 and 2? It's just one of those fun events where we're assured that we get to see matches we want.

Where's the upsets? Where's the consistency? Being a champion has as much to do with being able to consistently beat lower players as well as beat people at the top. There is NO way I'd consider this as high of a feat as a GSL championship.

Yeah, it seems like a championship, but if they are not calling it or considering it that, then I guess I will go with that they say.
We think too much and feel too little. More than machinery, we need humanity. More than cleverness, we need kindness and gentleness. Without these qualities, life will be violent and all will be lost. -Charlie Chaplin

This is a championship. That's not an opinion, that's a fact. For example, if Mvp won, he would be a 4 time GSL Champion, no matter what anyone says. I suggest you deal with it.

EDIT: Another thing I'd like to point out is that Blizzard Cup's prize money is higher than that of the World Championship. If World Championship counts, there's no reason that this doesn't count, considering it's supposed to be the ultimate challenge and the culmination of the entire year.

Haha, it DOESN'T MATTER what you consider. World Championship is, well, a championship.

He wouldn't. He'd be a Blizzard Cup champion. This is not GSL, it's an invitational across many other tournaments. And considering the fact that MVP is on his way to take 3 spots so they had to give it to 2 other players? What a farce.

Tempting as it is to call this a GSL championship - let's say Stephano won, I wouldn't buy any of "he's a GSL championship winner" talk. I want to see someone fight through the quagmire of Code a / Code S, get into the finals, and then beat his fellow finalist. Now that is a champion. Agree with everything you wrote

this is a championship, but i don't consider it a true gsl championship. perhaps somewhere above a special event, but below a real season.

It's a televised GSL LAN event. The reason Arena of Legends wasn't considered a GSL Championship was because the entire tournament was played online.

The World Championship being considered a GSL title messes everything up. If it wasn't, then this would be 100% a Special Event to me, but it's been said time and time again that it's a GSL championship since MVP is titled to being a three time champ.

Why would the World Championship NOT count?

Voted Special Event almost immediately. My perception of the GSL Championships are that they are something you have to go through the harsh qualification stages in order to enter. Where you are competing against hundreds of the best players in the world.

The Blizzard Cup feels more like an invitational event to the winners of other major tournaments.

By that standards though, the WC shouldn't stand as a GSL championship and the ST would. Oh well.

...The Super Tournament does count.

And your perception doesn't matter. This isn't something the community gets to decide. GOM decides, and if the World Championship was considered a GSL, there's no way in hell that this isn't going to be considered one.

Well, that's what I was trying to say, albeit unclearly. The ST does count and the WC does not.

If your argument is that it is entirely up to GOM to decide, then you're basically objecting to the entire purpose of the poll. All comments made here are essentially personal opinions anyway.
