I often try to research different things for fun. Where do I usually turn to look things up? Google. Google Google Google.

Search engines are great, but the sources you often come upon through Google are not always reliable or are not very good. Which is why I thought it'd be nice if we at Team Liquid created a neat little thread of great sources for various things.

What kind of sources am I talking about? Well, anything really! It can range from anime databases to awesome gaming communities to political stuff, scientific journals, reliable news sites, business-related sites, poetry, jokes, etc. etc.

How this will work:

  • Say specifically what the site is catered to (anime, news, politics, etc.)
  • Paste the URL.
  • Note whether it requires a paid membership, some kind of invite, or nothing. If the site requires a paid membership or whathaveyou I'll note it in the archive.
  • If the site is in a different language from English, please say so.
  • Do NOT list sites that may contain illegal material. For instance, no torrent sites, no music download sites, and no porn sites.
  • Use common sense. Do NOT post stuff like goatse.
  • Sites should be generally approved by readers. For instance, do not list the Daily Mail as a reliable news source.
  • I'll be archiving categories in alphabetical order.

Feel free to post any questions or suggestions.

I'll start!

Note: Academic sources that require paid memberships can usually be accessed through your University. For instance, I use my University's proxy to access JSTOR. Check up on that if you are interested.

why do you say arxiv.org requires paid membership? i not only read the arxiv, but i've published papers on it as well, and it doesn't and hasn't ever required a membership.

Economics and, to a lesser extent, Politics:

http://delong.typepad.com/
http://economistsview.typepad.com/
http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/ezra-klein/
http://www.cepr.net/index.php/beat-the-press/
http://gregmankiw.blogspot.com/
http://www.themoneyillusion.com/

http://www.brookings.edu/economics/bpea/past-editions.aspx
www.economist.com/

Authors, in order:

Paul Krugman (Liberal)
Brad Delong (Liberal)
Mark Thoma (Liberal)
Ezra Klein (Liberal)
Dean Baker (Liberal)
Greg Mankiw (Libertarian)
Scott Sumner (Libertarian)

No author, general Economics Papers Database. It's free.
General Economics Website. Clear browser cache every once in a while. Libertarian bent.

Allegedly, these are fairly good, but I haven't checked most of them; Time Magazine's top 25 finance blogs:

News:
www.pbs.org
www.npr.org

Both free and generally awesome.. Both air full length programs that are engrossing and entertaining. Frontline and NOVA? Yes please. Fresh Air is probably my favorite program on NPR. Terry Gross has a great ability to make just about anything interesting. My personal favorites are her interviews with older country music stars or young rap stars. Good stuff.

Movie Database/Reviews:
www.rottentomatoes.com

Music Streaming:
www.grooveshark.com

Preferable to pandora as you can choose the exact songs you wish to listen to, and there is also a "radio" option. i think there are no commercials on it, but that may be due to adblock on that site.

Movie/TV Streaming:
www.hulu.com
www.netflix.com (paid)

Beer:
www.beeradvocate.com

Somewhat strange in that the website's search function requires you to have a membership. You can google "beeradvocate beer" and get the result without membership.

Oh, good to know. I guess I was mistaken. Sorry for making you create an account just to clear that up for me. ^^;

Just added a big batch of things courtesy of Sky and his blog (http://www.teamliquid.net/blogs/viewblog.php?topic_id=213844).

We're severely lacking in the Games department. I'm not familiar with other popular gaming communities so it would be nice if someone can help in that regard. For instance, what is considered the TeamLiquid of Counter Strike, WoW, TF2 or other popular games?
