So I spent 6 hours today drinking beer and watching the travel channel and it really got me thinking. Over the last 5-6 years I have been doing a lot travelling mostly with WCG. Travel is one of my life's great passions and more recently I have worked up the nerve to just pick a random location and take off, even if it means going alone. My plans for this year are already booked, I'm going to spend a couple of weeks in Nepal in May trekking to Everest base camp, Oct/Nov will be LA for WCG and throughout the year I'll also be doing some travelling around Australia. I got my globe out and was trying to figure out where I'd like to go next year and nothing really stuck, which gets me to my question.

Do you guys have anywhere in the world you have always dreamed of going? And more importantly, why?

Have a good think about this before you scream Japan or Korea! if you had the money and time and had to pick one location on this planet to visit, where would it be?

I really would like to go to South Korea or Japan, but other than that, I'd like to go to New Zealand or another trip the U.S. Travelling in Russia would also be fun.

He's a SC referee.

I have so many places I want to visit Korea/Japan being one of them, but also Sint-Petersburg, Moscow, Argentina/Chile, Vegas, Canada and many more

Hrmmm well I've always wanted to go to Hawaii or Australia. Out of everywhere in the world those are my two "dream vacation" destinations. I haven't traveled too much, but I did get to go to England and France last summer, and I've been to Cancun and Dominican Republic for spring breaks (Cabo San Lucas, Mexico next week 8) ).

It would either be the two places listed above or somewhere in South America. After working in a global enterprise and working along with a lot of people from Brazil (and Australia) specifically I've grown a liking to the people, and that would explain some of my reasoning for wanting to visit a foreign place to begin with.

Skip the Arabian peninsula.

Chile / Argentina / Bolivia / the Andes / Patagonia. Also Buenos Aires if you like cities (I do).

Aside from that, I'd kinda like to go to Russia. No particular reason why, I think.

Alaska: Primary for snowboarding with a helicopter at my disposal but the Yukon and the rainforest are nice too.
Svalbard: beautiful but harsh and extreme nature, ghost towns + you are not supposed to leave settlements without a rifle because there are so many polar bears
Kronotosky Reserve, Russia: ever since i read a national grographic article about it
(http://ngm.nationalgeographic.com/2009/01/russia-wilderness/michael-melford-photography)
Zone of Alienation around Chernobyl: Ghost towns are fascinating and nature taking back human settlements just looks beautiful.
Bhutan: Really interesting country. They are developing rapidly they had like no electricity even in the capital about 50 years ago (maybe exaggerated i don't remember the exact date, but it was quite extreme). Their philosophy of Gross National Happiness makes it just awesome and it's the 8th happiest country in the world even though they are dirt poor. Their leaders are awesome, their king introduced democracy. Yes, that is the first time in history that a democracy was introduced by the leading king(ok I'm not sure about this but I think it is) who happily gave away power for the greater good of his people. Just awesome country

I'm planning on going trekking in Nepal when I become 18 (I'll have finnished 'highschool' by then) just like you! But! I've also always wanted to go to the wild Canadian north.

Ever since I was a kid I've wanted to go to Japan aswell, because how can you not love their culture/history, seriously?

Borneo also, but it's not that high on my list

I have quite a lot of other places I've wanted to go to for ages, but for now I'm stuck with school and thus my family, so I can't get around to it, but I have the blood of a traveller coursing through my veins.. I can feel it pulling me onwards!

Be Chinese and/or Korean and/or Russian and/or a woman?

I need to return to Morocco after I learn French or Arabic (not sure which will happen first), Tehran, Damascus, Karachi, Sudan/Uganda (coming up next year!), Russia, Spain, Prague, Budapest, Bucharest, Bulgaria (not sure where to go there), Kiev, Bahrain, Helsinki, Stockholm, Holland, Singapore, Malaysia, NZ, Iceland and NW US/Canada. I like traveling.

I might get to knock off the E. European ones this summer, but I'm hesitant without a travel buddy. Not because of safety, but because traveling with a companion is way way way way more fun.

Svalbard is actually a pretty cool place, so I would recommend going there. I would stay in Longyearbyen, and from there go snowmobiling in the area around the city. You should also take the ferry from Longyearbyen to some glacier (can't remember its name) and to Barentsburg, which is the Russian settlement. Only thing that sucks about Svalbard is that it's a long (and usually quite expensive) flight. Also, there isn't really too much to do there other than seeing beautiful nature and looking at polar bears through binoculars, but I guess that's the reason most people go to Svalbard for, anyways

I have plans to go to Thailand this summer, might stop by at South Korea for a tiny bit. Then the following year I'm going to Costa Rica, and New Zealand. Then the year after that I'll be going back to europe.

I think it would be best to speak from experience.

I've been to China, Italy and Japan but Turkey is just something different.

Japanese people may seem polite and formal and do their job very well, but their English just sucks and are really cold, maybe because of the language barrier. The Italians' English arent much better either, and the same applies. Of course, looking around and eating their food was nevertheless a huge eye opener.

Unlike the other 3 countries Turkey was just special and hence, memorable. My cousin who has been to a lot more places also agrees. Moreover, we travel with our families on a tour group, with obviously sucks compared to what you can do, and yet it still made a mark.

This is of course, speaking from my perspective as an Asian. They surprisingly seemed to be so fascinated with us =D Either that, or they treat everyone nicely. But I'm telling you I went there having the negative mindset, the preconception that it was a very "Islamic" place with how Islamic countries are shown in the media. But I have been proven wrong.

Just to assert my former point more, they have packed clubs and huge huge posters of lingerie models on their shops in the main street and in most places, very few wear headscarfs, about only 1/20 or so, unless you're in Angkara, where its like the other way around. Tuning in to their music channel, the level of sexuality is not much different than English videos.

Also, based on what little I've experienced, the level of English there is quite good. Most people can speak and understand enough to have a conversation.

the chicks are quite hot too

Ankara has only closed up recently since the new gov't, but yeah, Istanbul is very much a European city, with crazy nightlife, etc.

The thing with asians is weird, it's with black people too. If you're black, you're going to garner a lot of attention, including touching and requests for photographs. I hesitate to call it racism, since it's just excitement at someone superficially different, but I don't think think really judge you for it (unless you're Arab!) The same thing happens in Japan if you're a tall, blonde Westerner, but the Japanese are far too reserved to approach you or say anything. Not the case in a Mediterranean country...

I would take a trip from Beijing to Moscow or vice versa by Trans-Siberian railway. Looking at the globe and thinking about the distance it would be pretty awesome, crazy and unique.

This is definitely something I would like to do, I'd have to share the experience with someone though, I'd hate to be stuck in the cab of a train for a couple of weeks by myself reading.
