My friend and I have asked two wonderful ladies for a dinner double-date. we're all in our early 20's and quite frankly pretty green to this sort of thing as we all come from rural Alaska (we all live in Anchorage now, though). We don't have very many fine dining establishments in Anchorage, but the Crows Nest up top a 30-something story hotel is the nicest place downtown Anchorage has to offer.

here is the website: http://www.captaincook.com/crowsnest.php

I was just wondering what kind of attire one might wear to a 4 diamond establishment? I was thinking of doing some dark wash jeans with a blazer and pocket square with no tie... Would that be good?

One of the girls was also wondering what she should wear, as our closets are usually occupied by carhartts and XTRATUFF boots. I suggested a "little black dress." But I digress....

Any helpful tips or comments appreciated!

at minimum pants and a shirt

look at the picture on this page:
http://www.captaincook.com/restaurants.php

thats what you should be wearing, probably not required (though it wouldn't hurt) to wear a tie + jacket, but shirt and pants, definitely

seems like a nice place, have fun!

I'm going to a nice place tomorrow night myself, and unfortunately don't have any decent slacks. Do you think a nice pair of jeans with a tucked shirt (and maybe tie) would be acceptable?

Just call them and find out if there is a dress code. From the images on the site it looks like a jacket and tie place, but it is also Alaska. If Sarah Palin taught me anything it is that while snowmobiles are certainly not, ties may be optional.

After you call the restaurant to make sure you don't need a jacket and tie you want to look good. Stay away from jeans for formal dining. Even if you can get away with it at the restaurant it just looks bad. You cant go wrong with dress pants, a shirt, and a tie. Shoes are as important though.

Women have much more freedom when it comes to formal dining. As long as they aren't wearing pants and tshirt they can do dress, skirt/blouse, pantsuit, etc.

I don't think a suit is necessary. A suit is not normally formal dining wear unless there is an event attached. Do you wear a suit to a nice dinner after a concert? Sure. After a job interview? Sure. After a wedding? Sure. But on a date? Not so much imo.

Jeans send a certain message. Sometimes that message is "I don't own real pants". I am sure you will look fine, but investing in a pair of "go to" pants is never a bad idea.

Going out to dinner tomorrow night was a bit of a spur of the moment thing, but I'll definitely look into getting a good pair of pants in the future. I checked my closet and I do have a pair of dress pants, but they don't fit as well as a good pair of jeans, and also have one of those stretchable waist bands, so I'm not sure if I should go with those, or with the jeans.

As far as the restaurant goes, I've been doing whatever research I can. The attire is listed as business casual, so I should be fine without a tie. On review sites, they say there isn't a very strict dress code, but most of the comments were from 2006/7, so they might have gotten a bit stricter since then. I'll just see how the slacks look on me, and only go to the jeans if absolutely necessary.

As a side note, I'm a bit excited, the restaurant is a steakhouse called N9NE, and it's apparently a bit of a celebrity hangout (not that I care much).

That place looks good ^^ Yeah I mean it isn't the end of the world to wear jeans, and some people have no problem with it. It also depends on the reason. But for example, if you were taking out a woman and she did indeed put on her little black number, you wouldn't want to be under dressed beside her.

Tell the ladies to ditch the other guy and you'll wear them both at the same time. It will go over well, I promise.
Good luck!
Social Justice is a fools errand. May all the adherents at its church be thwarted. Of all the religions I have come across, it is by far the most detestable.

NICE jeans with a good shirt and NICE SHOES (!) are perfectly fine.
I don't even own a suit or a tie and I'm 26... My friends also at max own 1 for funerals and stuff like this.

But I don't know, this stuff can varies pretty hard from country to country.
I was in Ireland and i was pretty shocked... During the day girls look or actually are still unwashed wearing their sleeping or sport clothes and in the evening they dress up like sluts. Horrible, it's kinda similar for guys (but it does not jump you into the eye like it does for girls)...

Oh, NEVER wear a wifebeater... That’s like Instantfail.

I would go for something a bit like this (if jeans or cloth pants really doesn't matter as long as it fits): http://www.fm-siebdruck.de/catalog/images/787_00.jpg

Decent pants, dress shirt, blazer, nice shoes.

You potentially could get away with a really really good pair of jeans, but you will need a dress shirt, and a nice jacket. Or a tie.

Whenever I take a girl out to a fine dining restaurant though, its normally some of the best clothes i can find that I wear, and the girl is normally in a really nice dress.

Fine dining is upscale food, and so you should be at least appearing to be part of the regular client base.

Right, unless the restaurant requires it as was already said.

i love fancy eating places. too bad i'm poor as fuck! come to think of it i own exactly 1 collared shirt and no formal pants or shoes, so i guess i wouldn't be able to go anyway. have fun! the % chance of getting laid is directly proportional to how much money you spend on a girl (source: SCIENCE). you're gonna be great!
