Guys some sort of offtop but I am just very very curious.
Could you classify known US collages in their authority in the respective branches of science?
E.G. I know that for CS the most known universities are Standford/MIT/.., math is Princeton, maybe Berkeley, Harward is known for humanitarian things.
Could someone well enough informed tell which collages and what for are famous ?
Thanks.

Add Carnegie Mellon to CS.

Go to some ranking publication such as US NEWS for some basic rankings in certain fields... there are really too many to really list. I guess it's easier to ask "what are the best colleges for _________"?

And that was a really good post, WhatisProtoss -- I'll refer some clueless juniors and sophomores to that as it is too late for me ;D

Thanks, never knew that Carnegie Mellon is that great.
I am going to apply to a collage in US or preferably in Europe for 1semester/year collaborative work as I work on PHD in CS. I'd be happy if I manage to get to ETH Zurich, they have awesome research groups, but a good collage in US would be nice too.
GL everyone!
Btw one more question: guys you are applying for 2010? wtf? Or did I miss anything?

We are the college graduating class of 2010. So 2006 (current year) + 4 years = graduation year (aka 2010)

Harvard has math people...but they don't dwell on that.

WhatIsProtoss's post is excellent advice for admissions.

It's true, at least at Brown, that many of the essay readers are young; I don't know any undergrads working admissions at Brown but I do know three people who are between 25 and 35. One of them told me the other day that an interesting essay or a recommendation which is really strong (some phrases they remember are "This student is the brightest I have had in 20 years..." etc.) were important in distinguishing applicants.

PlayJunior: No matter what your field, Harvard will give you a good background. For some fields, it's the top school in the country. For others, particularily sciences/math, if you are sure what field you want to be in by the time you are finishing HS, there are better places to go (Cal Tech, MIT, Berkeley/Stanford for some fields, etc). Most people aren't sure what they will major in at 17-18, but if you do, there are a lot of lesser known schools that are very strong in certain areas (Duke, Johns Hopkins come to mind, for example).

Carnegie Mellon's CS is top undergraduate in the country if i recall correctly.
BioMed Engineering at Case Western is top 5 and not that hard of a school to get into even for that field.
Cornell Engineering is top 10 maybe top 5.
Cornell School of Hotel Administration is top 1 in the WORLD, and its really joke too but you need that kind of personality.
UPenn is known for their business school
I say UChicago is a good place to go for liberal arts, and their application/essays are weird as hell.

PlayJunior, yeah figure out what you want to do (or at least a general idea) and have a backup, one of my friends here thought he would be doing bioengineering and then switched over to philo so you never know till you start working on the subject.

Oh... dude, don't worry so much -_-;; SATs is not bad, you can do the math part easy. Verbal just takes some practice and memorization.

Buy the big SAT practice books. I think the best for SAT I is CollegeBoard's "10 Real SATs". Doing those will help you a lot for SATs. If you need help on SAT IIs, buy CollegeBoard's SAT II's books. Just work hard. One step at a time...

Other good companies: Kaplan, Princeton Review. I think Princeton Review makes it harder than it really is, so if you can get a decent score with Princeton Review books, then you're all set.

When I took the SATs, I got a combined score of 1140. I was scared shitless, and one summer of studying brought me up almost exactly 300 points. Just old fashioned, korean style mindless memorization.

Haha old fashioned korean style.

Harvard, CalTech, MIT, and UCBerkeley are all on par for math. Harvard is actually a good overall school. Maybe not as strong in engineering though.

Ummm... weak point yes, but that's just because everything else they have is so good.

Engineering
1. MIT
2. Stanford
3. UC Berkeley
4. Georgia IT

8. CalTech
9. Carnegie Mellon

12. Cornell

17. Princeton

20. Harvard Univ.

Yeah, their engineering school is extremely good.

well, the UC system is heavy on california residents, and are REQUIRED to take something like the top 3% students from each highschool class. Out of state students have a REALLY hard time getting into UC schools, so it's not your fault.

I'd say those are excellent numbers, but all these places you mentioned get thousands of applications with similar numbers. In the end, it comes down to "how are you different from everyone else?"

I dont even remember wtf I wrote for my college essays and extracurricular stuff, but I remember trying to make myself distinct from everyone else.

edit: just read whatisprotoss' advice, and I must say it was absolutely EXCELLENT advice.

I think i had an edge of a lot of people because I attended a small private school with only 40 kids in my class, knew all my teachers very closely, and they all knew me on a personal level. My recommendations were from 1) my spanish teacher with whom I had classes for 4 straight years up to AP spanish, and she knew what kind of student I was. 2) my physics teacher, who was also my varsity soccer coach.
It's best if you can create a very close relationship with your teachers who understand how hard you work, you bright you are, etcetc, and have them write you your rec.

edit2: >ilikestarcraft - If you have any questions I'll be happy to help out as well. ALthough I'm not as familiar with korean HS stuff as whatisprotoss, I have some close friends on campus who are from korea, so it shouldnt be too hard to make the connections.

i guess one of my few "pulls" was that i help out at my church (4 hours a week?) even though personally i don't really believe in christainity, i got my recommendations from one of the sisters there, a teacher of one of my college courses, and a teacher that liked me from high school

Wtf? I can't see how someone with those numbers gets rejected from a school like Cornell. The average SAT for Cornell is probably around 1450 Also I guess the college courses don't really matter unless they come from a pretty respectable college. It doesn't prove anything to Harvard if you can take calc 3 at a community college --

In fact places like harvard, princeton, yale, stanford etcetcetc wont even accept college courses taken before college or AP's.

The most I got was placement into more advanced courses based off of AP's. They will not give you credit for the course.(except for some small exceptions)

edit: again, numbers are like the "prequalifier". It's like the bare minimum an applicant must have for them to even be considered. From there on, it becomes a quesion of "uniqueness" of the applicant.
