Yeah, he's done well this year in all the fights he's been in. Anyway, what a circus between L.A. and Edmonton last night but the result couldn't have been any better (for Edmonton at least!). Welcome to the new rules Oilers! First period was a dandy with nonstop penalty killing and power plays after the first three minutes. Rexall Place was rocking last night!

As for the Leafs versus Islanders. Well shit I didn't like one goal last night. They were all pretty bad goals. It's odd because Nabokov had a good morning skate but once the game started oh boy. He looked shaky going into the first half of the game but then shut the door. As for the goals against Toronto. Phaneuf failed to find the trigger on three of them. The major turning point developed around the first PK for Toronto where we had the Islanders in their own zone for a good fifty seconds and the boys gassed out; the Islanders regain possession and put it at the back of the net as the Leafs were unable to get back. Everyone was hooting and hollering in the building for the work our boys showed in their end but as soon as they got it back we couldn't get back in time. Other than that, Scrivens mishandles the first goal (his rebound control in his first three games has been poor and he's had shaky moments in every game thus far) and then you have goals 4 and 5 which were both glove side with no tip. I'm sure he wants those ones back. Just all around horrible game from both teams and after that first penalty kill Toronto's balloon completely deflated. Their passing became abysmal and they were losing every little battle for the puck. Reminds you of last years collapse! :D

Burrows now centering the Canucks 2nd line? Guess he got his 4.5m for the next 5 years or whatever, its time to inflate some other guys goal stats via the Sedin Line. Zach Kassian, come on down to that 5 million NTC contract!

Burrows is a clutch player. He scored two OT winners in the 2010-2011 playoffs, both of which were entirely his own efforts, and one of which was in game 7. Him and Kesler have been Vancouver's top penalty killing forwards for years, and he's averaged 30 goals over the last three years, despite not playing on the top powerplay unit. He's also one of their top players in the shootout, and can play a gritty, aggravating style.

Saying "Oh, he plays with the Sedins, all he has to do is stand there and have pucks bounce off him" is just ignorant. He's a reliable two way player who can be put in any situation and can be counted on to come through in clutch moments.

Yes. Averaging 30 goals is impressive when playing with the Sedins. Ask Anson Carter. But I guess good news, with Kesler's agent saying 'our goal is to make sure he plays for the next 8 years instead of 8 months" we wont be seeing Ryan on the 2nd line for a while longer and we will get to see Burrows greatness.

And please, that OT goal against the Hawks was 'entirely his own efforts'? Getting Campoli to feed him when he had the entire surface of the ice rank to shoot for was a god send and Burrows, together with the city of Vancouver, should be sending poor old Chris a thank you card every year. Well, I guess since Canuck fans burned down the city after that, maybe just Burrows. .

Anson Carter also hit 60 points while playing on Edmonton. In fact, when playing with the Sedins, he got 55 points that season. He also hit 55 points two seasons prior when not playing with the Sedins. So what is your point, exactly? That a 50+ point player can get 50+ points playing with the Sedins?

Additionally, in all the time Burrows has played with the Sedins, he's always played on the second powerplay unit. As a result, he's averaged 2.5 powerplay points a season while playing with the Sedins. Anson Carter, on the other hand, did play on the top powerplay unit. Of his 55 points, 25 were on the powerplay. Additionally, Burrows plays a significant amount on the penalty kill, and when the penalty kill is over, he has to rest so somebody else plays with the Sedins for a shift. If Burrows didn't penalty kill AND played on the top powerplay unit, he would easily have hit 80 points instead of 67.

The season when he was put on the Sedin's line, he was already on pace for 23 goals, and had been making steady progress since becoming a full time NHL player. Maybe he's not a player who's going to get 30 goals every season (although he certainly could if placed on the top powerplay unit), but consistently hitting the mid twenties while contributing in other areas is pretty damn good. Do you know how many players repeatedly hit 30 goals from season to season?

Carter scored 30+ goals only once, when he was on the Sedin line. Anyone who plays with them instantly gets a 10 goal difference and that automatically inflates their value, which is why Burrows went up from a 30 point to a 50 point guy instantly. And we will see that when Kassian gets 20-25 goals for no reason and Burrows stuck on the second line lingers at 40-50 points. And yes, playing on the top power play unit with the Sedins would make him better. Thats exactly my point. Anywhere else and he is a 3rd line, two way player. Thanks to the Sedin magic he is a 4.5 million guy. Just like Zach Kassian is going to be too.

And yeah, Burrows just asked Campoli for the puck and then because he had the puck it automatically went into the net. Or, he jumped up, grabbed it, and then shot the bouncing puck top corner in an incredibly high pressure situation. But since you clearly dislike Burrows, let's downplay it and sound like he did nothing there and it was just a fluke, because everyone scores playoff game 7 OT winners.

Yes, he clearly just asked for it, which is why it went to him instead of to the 99% of the ice that was unoccupied by anyone. But glad to see you agree that it was a combination of incredibly luck and Campoli's incompetence that afforded the Canuck fans the opportunity to burn down their city again.

Unfortunately, the last couple games have shown what that trade did to the Rangers depth. Losing Dubi and Arty meant that Hagelin and Kreider were really gonan have to step it up and they've looked quite meh (hagelin) or outright shit (kreider) through 3. Torts said that Kreider might be AHL bound shortly. I don't doubt that he will come around because the dude is young and has got skills, but the A might be better now.

It just unfortunately leaves a big ass hole.

Nash-Richards-Gabby
Hagelin-Stepan-Cally
Kreider/AHL player-Boyle-Pyatt
Rupp-Halpurn-Asham

Those top six guys will probably shuffle a bit, but that bottom six ahhhhhh

Why'd yall get Nash anyway? Lundquist is doing his thing but he cant help it if you have one line.

...That's not a pretty good 2nd?? You've got two 50+ guys in Stepan and Cally and a guy who'd probably hit 50 in a full 82 in Hagelin. plus you could always bounce around guys in the top 6 to balance it out if that 2nd was meh. Even as I listed above, most teams would be pretty happy to have that.

The Rangers issue is their bottom six blows now, especially since Kreider has looked like ass to start. Arty and Dubi would have gotten a lot of minutes there and they're better than any of the options currently.

The reason they traded is because the Rangers under Torts have always had an issue scoring. Arty and Dubi were good for 2nd or 3rd minutes, but on the first they weren't truly dynamic players. Nash is a stud offensively, and pretty much fits the Rangers system perfectly since he's really good on the forecheck (they dump and chase all day, even if it makes zero sense to do so at times) and is pretty decent in his own end.
So far watching the games Stepan and Hagelin seem pretty invisible. Wasnt that the whole reason why Gaborik was moved up to the Nash-Richards line in place of Hagelin to increase offensive output because no one else was doing itl? And wasnt Anisomov on his way to becoming a 2nd line center himself, Filipula-ish in his contributions so Stepan could skate on the wing? Anyway, I dont watch every Rangers game so I dont know but seems like a lot was given up for Nash.

But I guess its really hard to tell in a short season, next year will be the year when people get a real training camp and October/November games to warm up.

That was the closest us Edmonton fans have been to a playoff game in almost 7 years. If you watch the whole game you can understand why he is so over the top happy. Edmonton had 2 goals called off, one in the last minute as the game tying goal that should have been a goal for sure. A total of 19 penalties called - most just ridiculous. The whole team was so frustrated, the fans were chanting "YOU SUCK REFS" and throwing things on the ice. It looked pretty bleak as Quick was playing amazing, and then Yak pots one with 4 seconds left. The crowd goes wild.

Was a damn near Hollywood finish.

That game was incredibly hard to watch. Yakupov saved the officiating staff from getting shanked. He should get a medal.

edit: Weirdest ending since the Patrick Stefan missed empty netter.

The only thing that could have made Yak's celebration better was if he was mic'd up and screamed "ARE YOU NOT ENTERTAINED??!" while sliding.

Did you even read what I said? Burrows was already on pace for 23 goals before he ever played with the Sedins (he ended up with five more than that), and this was at a time when he was steadily improving his numbers. Anson Carter got five more goals than his previous career high, so you're just wrong there. Incidentally, 15 of those goals came on the powerplay. So, while playing on the top powerplay unit, he increased his career high in goals by five, therefore your logic is based on that, Burrows, while not playing on the top powerplay unit AND penalty killing, automatically increases his goals by ten just because he plays with the Sedins.

Additionally, Taylor Pyatt while playing with the Sedins averaged 19.5 goals a season, with a career high of 23. Later, in Phoenix, he hit 18. Again, a difference of five. Notably, when he did hit 23 goals, 9 of those were on the powerplay not playing with the Sedins. So, he got 14 goals while playing with the Sedins. Again, you are wrong.

Finally, Naslund, who played part of the 07-08 season with the Sedins got almost the exact same goal totals as he did the previous and subsequent season, and actually went down in points from the previous season. Once again, you have absolutely no stats to back up your claims of players automatically increasing their goal totals by ten just because they play with the Sedins. You know who increased their previous career high in goals by ten while playing with the Sedins? Burrows, for one season. You know who else? Nobody.

Basically, your entire argument comes down to "But Anson Carter got over 30 goals while playing with the Sedins, therefore anyone else who plays with them automatically just gets a bunch of points and they're really not very good!" Burrows has not only had the most success with the Sedins, but he's also the only one to NOT have a significant amount of his goals come from the powerplay, AND the only one to play a significant role on the penalty kill. He's a complete player who's earned his money, and getting him for $2 million a year before was an incredible deal.

Wild getting slapped around by the fucking Red Wings. Doesn't seem like Suter and Parise are making much of a difference; still see the exact same problems that the Wild had last year. No offensive inspiration worth speaking of and stupid defensive mistakes. Early in the season, but in typical Minnesota fashion, I'm not holding my breath for playoff chances.

Ovechkin needs to stop bumbling around the ice. The guy falls down more than anyone, with no contact. The thing that burns me is that the thing that he is known for is scoring, while falling down. Now if he would just stop doing it when he is entering the zone or pivoting.

Well Caps get there first point of the season, atleast, and they did look to be more comfortable in their system almost coming back to win it.
The Goalie duel between Broduer and Neuvirth was impressive as well. Some really nice saves.

On another note, does it seem like the Refs are calling a closer game than they normally would? Seems like a shortened season is the wrong time to start calling every single thing when everyone is still rusty. Or is that the reason why there are so many penalties; players are out of condition and committing more penalties because of it? I have seen alot of interference and trips, and not all of them seem like they have would have been called last season.

Canucks finally bringing their game, love it. Best part is, all the players who got crap last year like Ballard and Raymond are stepping up. Can't wait for the Sharks game.

the ice just ain't as good in warm NA rinks as it is in Edmonton and Russia's frozen north. as a result, Ovechkin is making cuts that can't be made on NA ice.
i think this is what u get when a very highly tuned on the edge player doesn't quite have his timing down perfectly.

Ovechkin will be fine.

First off, it's not like rinks are outdoors. Yes, Washington visited Tampa, but they still keep the ice cold and take three time outs per period to clean it off to keep it high-quality.

Second, their other three games have been against Winnipeg, Montreal, and New Jersey. It's averaging around 0F in the Northeast and even colder in the Midwest and Canada. It's not exactly "warm" at the moment. You're just giving him too much credit.

the ice is better in Russia... end of story.

2 quick examples,
last time i was at the Bell Centre it was 20 C like 30 metres away from the ice.
same thing at the ACC.. the ice at the ACC is sometimes average and sometimes bad.

once Ovechkin gets accustomed to the crap ice surfaces in the NHL he'll stop falling over.
