I don't know the situation for the French team in regards to where they live but I don't feel their origins really matter, so long as they grew up and were educated in France. I can tell you the vast majority of Dutch players don't live in the Netherlands because the Eredivisie is a smaller league and their top players all go abroad. I also know for example, on the German team, Mesut Ozil was born in Turkey but moved to Germany when he was 2, was educated in Germany, benefitted from German football education, etc. He is German. Some people think he shouldn't play for Germany simple because of his blood but I think that is not only ridiculous but racist. The same goes for France in my opinion. It doesn't matter where their parents are from, it matter where they are educated. If they are educated in France then they are French and that shouldn't be questioned. Nowadays the world is becoming so globalized with immigrants coming and going from country to country and thus more and more the national team will represent that.

Uhm Mesut was born in Gelsenkirchen, Germany. The whole discussion is still stupid :p

Yes, you are correct. I misread that somewhere then. Regardless, his ancestors came from Turkey which is the subject being discussed.

So much hate towards Spain in this thread. Respect the European + World Champions.
I'm also bored when I see someone like Flash stomp someone easily in a boring way, but perfection is boring most of the time .

For World + Euro champs , Spain wasn't impressive at all , due to the fact after they scored the 1st goal , they fell asleep plus France was unable to react and played incredibly bad , Benzema was a total failure during the whole championship , this match was so boring to watch I'd prefer watch a -13 y/o match ...

Not in a stomping-everyone-boring way, more like a we-don't-really-care-to-score-boring way.

If they had stomped france 3:0 in the first half and then chilled in the second I honestly wouldn't have cared, but playing home a 1:0 by simply passing the ball around is boooooooooring....

Only reason why spain was WC champions was because of cassilas (who is severely under talked about imo) and midfield, the rest of their team was utter garbage . They're far from perfection and I'd say if it wasnt for their keeper spain would be w/e
That said I've been cheering for them since 08 only because of their keeper and the fact zidane retired in 2006 left a hole that needed to be filled

gets so bad that the players are actually affected in the way they play their game, which is why the best French player, by far, is Ribery. He's already been so entirely despised by the entire nation that now he doesn't give a fuck what retarded french people or media think and plays for the team and for himself. That's the kind of thing that comes with the experience from losing and being hated, that's what some of the players have like Malouda and Lloris and Ribery, the others are too new at this.
And Malouda's getting old, people, dont hate on him cuz he's slowing down, i think he was one of the better players on the pitch tonight. tutututut ! undefeated != winning streak. We did NOT win 23 matches, and most of them were.... so-so. I haven't seen a really GOOD match from France for a long time. The previous defeat was... well the defeat was not the problem, it was the way they played, seemingly not *wanting* to play and win, being half-assed. Yes they're scared, yes we are often calling them names and we should stop to let them gain confidence, but they kinda brought it on themselves, and the garbage from 2010 will take a LONG time to be forgotten. The first step would be to show us good games, and will to win, even if we lose. Just PLAY. Not this, or even worse the previous one. We want players who try things, might fail, do crazy shit, entertain, have a good attitude. Win or lose ? I don't really care. You're absolutely right. It's just so frustrating and infuriating to see France play the way they did tonight and vs Sweden, showing no fighting spirit, being so passive allgame long like it's some random exhibition match... What a poor display, soz to every TLer who watched this game =X.
France just hasn't had a good game for a long long time. They only won things because of Zidane (ie euro 2002 + WC 2010 are perfect examples of how bad they are w/o someone to carry them, altho domenech also messed them up a lot so its not all their fault). Zidane is my favourite player ever, but just say what it is: France is just another team thats overhyped way too much

Wow I never thought I would see the day when people accuse Spain of playing boring football I thought that was reserved only for Greece. That being said, I did fall asleep watching France vs Spain lol. I missed the entire 2nd half.

Im glad your post was on the last page of this thread. Saved me time reading it. Football threads are the worst sports threads on TL - scary amounts of nonsense.

First time ever i've fallen asleep watching football. Jeeez, France really lost a lot when Zidane and Henry left.
|
The funniest bit was when the ITV commentators (who fail epicly) said "Spain are so good on the counter-attack!".
They precede to get past the half was line, 4 vs 4.... pass...... pass.... pass it square...... pass it back...... pass it square. Until they brought Pedro and Torres on they literally didn't have a single player willing to run with the ball.

Not even the most hardcore supporters can say that was entertaining play by Spain.

Everyone is hating on Spain always playing boring which it was but you know it's quite fuxking difficult if every opponent just plays super defensively. You can't expect them to just always play amazingly entertaining when none of their opponents except Italy! This euro even want to score a goal.... Anyway i think this game proves that just parking the bus only works in like 1 game out of 10 against Spain, Chelsea did it against Barca and it worked wih some luck but it's obv it ain't gonna work this euro..

France didn't park the bus for large parts of the game. They left huge amounts of space on Spain's right side for Arbeloa and their midfielders to exploit, but Spain was too slow to capitalize. Same with counters - especially during the first 20 minutes of the second half, Ribery created a lot of pressure, but they lost possession and France's forwards/wingers were very slow to fall back and defend, but Spain blew almost every counter by taking out speed in favor of passing. Hence, the game got incredibly stale, and most of it to be attributed to Spain, who were content at keeping it 1:0, because it seemed safe.

Lets me explain, Spain is gonna play like this every game, they were playing like this since WC2010 when they discovered that they have the best midfielders out there in term of keeping possession and Guadiolar has shown them the way with Barcelona. Actually, before this 2-0 victory against France, every game of Spain in WC 2010(in knock-out stage) has been 1-0. These are
WC 2010 Spain knock-out result 1/16 Spain 1 0 Portugal 1/8 Spain 1 0 Paraguay 1/4 Spain 1 0 Germany Final Spain 1 0 Netherlands.
It seems that teams still can't find a way to counter the possession play of Spain. Unlike the beautiful play of Barcelona, Spain makes this boring cos they can't play it as good as Barca 'cos they lack Messi . This Spain team is basically Barcelona w/o Messi thus make it much more boring but still very effective.

We learnt a lesson in the past and started to actually "compete": why Spain should keep attacking to a team whose wish is to be attacked so they can counterattack? Yes, as a spectator, is better if they attack each other till one dies, but that's the worst scenario for Spain as players are not known for having a very strong condition.
So if you put in the equation a team whose best asset is ball circulation, plus having scored already (first 30 min were quite good IMO), plus a team that didn't die attacking = Spain for sure it's not gonna risk counterattacks
