Lol we have terrible defenders. Ukraine should take this fairly easily. Sweden should be happy to draw against Ukraine and keep the inevitable losses against France and England as even as possible.
Well I think this game is certainly going to see some goals but I expect Sweden to take this. Just too strong midfield for Ukraine, it'll take a tactical success to keep Swede's from scoring.

We have a really good chance of taking this game. Ukraine have the advantage of playing on home ground, but we have a lot more quality in our team. I predict a 2-1 victory.

Regardless of how fragile we might be right now, Ukraine isn't exactly the most top tier team either, and England has had all sorts of problems, so I wouldn't count us out just yet.

How is it being a realist? Ukraine is not a big footballing nation in any way. They have only been in one major tournament ever (2006), and they're coming into this championship with two straight losses whereas Sweden is 5-0 in 2012 and has a strong squad led by an absolute top notch, world class striker who is coming from his best season ever. I don't see how it's being a ''realist'' to say that Ukraine should take this game ''fairly easily''. And talking about ''invetitable losses'' vs France and England; we never lose to England in competetive games.
Yup, how can you see Sweden in such a bad light? I've got them in second place to go through, above England. Ukraine is the big underdog in this group. We'll see how much the home advantage means...

Uhm no, it's not realistic at all to say "Ukraine should take this fairly easily..."
I agree that our defense are our biggest flaw but it's not like Ukraine have it better in parts of their team. Why don't you bring up their flaws?
Sweden have a really strong offense and a pretty poor defense. I would say 3-2 Sweden. I wish we had Elmander for some through balls. Good thing we dont start with Toivonen on top atleast. I really like Hamréns line up.
I hope lustig and Rosenberg don't play. These are weak players in a functioning team, that has the potential to achieve something amazing in this tournament.

I agree with this. This is one of the weakest Swedish teams I've seen in a championship, but England and especially Ukraine are both within our reach.

I think we (Sweden) have a good chance of getting out of the group. A bit sad that France didn't beat England, but hopefully we can take them down. We have a good history against them. France didn't look strong at all today, but maybe they had too much respect for England. I'm very positive. We should beat Ukraine and put ourselves in a good position.
I expect this to be high scoring. Ukraine have some crazy pace, unlike Mellberg. On the other hand, Sweden have some truly scary forwards, especially Zoltan
Apparently Ukraine is going to start with their fourth goalkeeper? The Swedish studio mentioned it, but didn't go in depth about it. If it's true, it bodes very well for us.
Shevchenko ^^^. One of the best striker in the last 15 years, too bad this EURO come so late in his career, would have been so awesome if this was 10 years ago.
The Ukraine? You know what the Ukraine is, it's a sitting duck. A road apple, Newman. The Ukraine is weak. It's feeble. I think it's time to put the hurt on the Ukraine...
Sweden don't look very good I must say. To be honest, only Russia and Netherlands actually really looked good attacking thus far. That's the problem with the Euros, since there are only 3 group stage games, teams are too frightened to really take any risks in the first game.

I liked Croatia as well. To me it felt like they were the only team who were not happy with a single goal throughout the game.

Sweden very rarely looks good tbh, we kinda just churn, churn and churn away until something happens. Don't think we've ever played such an offensive team, that should tell you something.
Sweden is better than this though, atleast in qualifying. The occasion and playing the homeside must be getting to them. Being favourites isnt helping either. Theyre literally at 6s and 7s at times.

It's like that in the World Cup, Champions League, Copa America, Africa Cup of Nations etc as well. To some extent it's true though, depending on the match up the teams feel like a draw is a good enough result. Later in the group stages that is less true, since usually one team needs to go for the win.

Ah right, forget about them, they also looked quite good. This game is opening up now though, quite entertaining. Both teams beginning to play better.
Sweden playing like absolute shit. Not a single structured attack. Either Rosenborg or Källström decide to go on a single man spree where they attempt to run through a concrete wall of 4 defenders or they throw a 50 meter pass to Zlatan. Just play it safe and build up the attack please?
We're missing a leader in midfield, methinks. Much too slow in the build-up and no one's really taking the deep runs to tear at the defence. We need Elmander bad, and Svensson would be a good boost to the midfield.
Please, be realistic guys. Russia and Croatia were only able to play such nice football because both Czech Republic and Ireland opened themselves so much.
Otherwise the game wouldn't have been much better than that.
They are serious about watering the pitch... This has probably been the most boring day of Euro 2012 so far, it can only get better in the second half ;P

It's just worse in the Euros I feel like because the competition is higher in the group stage with no real weak teams participating. A loss in the first game is crushing. Look at Netherlands, they played quite attacking football against Denmark and created a flurry of chances which they wasted and they got caught on a break. Now they are more likely then not going home.
I guess I am kind of selling some teams a bit short though now that I think about it, as I have enjoyed most of the games with France - England and Portugal - Germany (except the last 15 minutes) being the exceptions.
Poland - Greece : Entertaining though largely because of drama and incompetence Russia - Czech Rep. : Entertaining football by Russia, especially Arshavin played well (poor Arsenal) Holland - Denmark : Entertaining game from both teams who played quite daringly. Dutch attacked magnificently at times and the Danes by no means parked the bus and had a lot of chances as well. Portugal - Germany : A little bit boring until Germany scored the goal as it forced Portugal to make some attempts to attack. Italy - Spain : Entertaining game as well, with Italy initially creating quite a few dangerous chances. Cassano was especially good. Second half Spain made some substitutions and created many more dangerous opportunities. Croatia - Ireland : Was unable to see this game unfortunately. England - France : Mostly boring game with England playing very defensively and France not willing to take any real risks to break them down. Sweden - Ukraine : At half time its been an entertaining game after the first 10 minutes. Ukraine probably slightly the better side but best chance fell to Sweden.
So I guess its been a fun tournament to watch thus far thinking about it. Hoping for the next round to be even better though.

Sweden impressed me in the qualifiers, but they are really terrible in this match. Ukraine I was expecting to be bad and I am actually quite impressed by their attack. Their defense is just as terrible as the Swedes though. Lets see the 2nd half.
So happy for Shev, Seriously they should build a monument for him in Ukraine but kind of feel bad for sweden scored a goal and surdenly boom boom 10min l8t Shevchenko sinks them!
Fuck. Sweden didn't get up to their standard. Ukraine got 2 chances second half got lucky and scored both. Then transitioned into delaying and neutralizing swedens already weak offence.
Ukraine did their shit and did it well. My sincere congratulations. Scheva is a monster, but shouldn't be given the space he gets to score. So fucking frustrating. It's exactly the same thing that we do the last two friendlies. We cannot defend corners and crosses to save our lives. The most important player to mark gets free reign. From now on we are one hundred percent super mega fucking all in in the last two games. It's looking dark as hell, but we need to stand strong, brothers. Heja Sverige.
piss poor sweden always deliver in tourneys. toivonen cant do shit, woodleg elmander cant do shit. the only player that's really good is ibra. and lustig is shit as usual. /rant
Props to Sjevtjenko. Curse his existence though. Okay, sorry, that was harsh, but curse his career choice! I'm sure he would've made a great banker or doctor or whatever :,(
The better team definately won this one, too bad the second goal was gifted away though. There should be no chance to put the ball between the post and the player that is designed to guard it. GG Lustig -.-

Oh hi there. Everything went as I anticipated as Ukraine played better and took the game fairly comfortably. Also, I spelled "inevitable" correctly, so I'm not sure why you would cite it as "invetitable".
Grats to Ukraine, they played really well especially on the right wing. Must have felt great for Shevchenko too!
I just hate how Sweden (Mellberg) keeps trying the long passes from all over the field. It doesn't only generate boring games, it is also such a chance play. Also, Lustig leaving the post during Ukraine's corner goal... I learned in kiddy league to not leave the post as a defender during corners until the ball was cleared :D
Ukraine can't be allowed to score two cheap goals like that... And even if I'm mad because the referee blew the whistle too much I must say he did a good job. I'm hope we can defeat England and France now...(who am I kidding...?)
wilheilmson (is that his name? blonde winger) looked so pissed when that guy took the chance from him, he had lined his body and posture up to blast that into the corner

"Cheap" goals? Shev did OUTSTANDING job on both of those, especially the second one, putting the ball between the post and the player guarding it.
i dunno bout you guys, but that did NOT look comfortable to me. Ukraine looked very nervous at the back for a number of chances. Sweden just failed to capitalise a lot of them.

Ukraine's D looked pretty dam shakey but now they can just turtle the next two games and a win and two draws should be enough to go through to the elimination stage. But also bad luck to Ukraine about the groups, if they and poland swapped groups then Ukraine would be a clear favorite with Russia to move on as Greece, Poland and the Czechs look like the three weakest teams, so far.

I don't know how you can argue how they weren't cheap. We have 4 defender s in the box on the first one. No one is watching or holding Scheva, who is used to heading in sweet crosses like that. The second goal is an absolute atrocity. He should not be allowed to get clear like that, and Lustig let go of the post like the fucking idiot waste of space he is. If he stands by the post LIKE HE SHOULD there is no second goal. I'm boiling with anger. Like I said earlier in the thread, this is what we've sucked at lately, and something we should have been better at, especially when facing a brilliant striker like Scheva.
That's not to say that Schevchenko didn't do it well. Two excellent headers are extremely hard to hit like that, and he is still a fantastic player, even at 35.

First goal was Melberg showing his age, its a bit unfair to expect all the defenders to collapse on one guy. If its a zone its Melbergs fault. If he was supposed to mark him its still Melbergs fault.
Second goal was just everyone in Sweden falling asleep because no one was expecting such a tight finish. Well they shouldve been.
I wouldnt call them cheap goals. If a goal is scored like that and so many defenders around its usually someones fault but still goals like that get scored all the time, a cheap goal would be perhaps the one Jelavic scored yesterday.

That doesn't make the goals cheap. It only means defenders did a very lousy job. Cheap goals are ones based purely on luck (ball randomly bouncing off of someone, goalkeeper not catching some very weak and easy ball etc.).
By the way, I believe this video is in order here:

Underestimate Shevchenko to your own detriment.
You just further explained why the goals where very cheap. I'm afraid I won't be swayed on this. Good strikes from Scheva, but the goals were gifted to him. Call me ignorant, biased, stupid or whatever, but I cannot see those goals as anything but cheap.

Wow, I thought English fans were unforgiving....
Fans (Swedish fans, British fans, any fans) know a lot less about football than the lead coaches do. That's kind of a "duh".
Fans look at things such as "in what club does he play?" and "how many goals did he score?" when deciding the value of a player.
Willhelmsson plays football in Qatar and Svensson is the only player from the Swedish domestic league who gets a lot of playtime. This is enough reason for fans to consider these two player bench material.
Ukrainians should be ashamed of themselves as their national team faked injuries left and right. Lustig next time you are guarding your post, guard your fucking post.

I take any bet in the world that Swedish players would have done the very exact same thing if the situations had been reversed.

Actually it's been the Swedish coaches who've been looking at what clubs the players belong to for a long time. And you're seriously arguing Svensson isn't way past his prime? Wilhelmsson used to be at least fast and have ok technique. Now he's not that fast and just ends up trying to make love to the ball or walk it all the way into the net.

There will always be harsh critics. Wilhelmson is playing in the middle of nowhere but almost always gives a good showing. I cannot agree with the dude calling Svensson terrible. I still hold him over Elm. A very experienced and great passer, and fights like almost no one else. I for one will hang out Lustig for the second goal, and probably said some harsh things in my rage.

Some Swedish players were rolling around as well. Unfortunately that shit is here to stay, unless FIFA and UEFA takes strong stands against it, which I hope they do.

The Swedish winger that came on (was it Svensson or Wilhelmsson?) looked so deadly. He's one to look at as this tourney progresses definitely.
England and France need to look out...this group is very open. Any team can go through
Wait, what? "Taco" Svensson is terrible and way, way past his prime. Wilhelmsson is terrible too, the only thing I want to look at him do is get off the team.
Wow, I thought English fans were unforgiving....
Fans (Swedish fans, British fans, any fans) know a lot less about football than the lead coaches do. That's kind of a "duh".

But that's so stupid...anyone who watched the game would clearly see that Willhelmsson is a fantastic winger. Every time he ran he had defenders reeling. He lacks a bit of composure in crowded environments, but there was a lot of commitment and ability there.
I hope he comes back to Europe. I'd most definitely like to see more of him after that spell.

They're both past their prime. They're not terrible. Svensson is a great passing player and he found his way through the center field with good passes today, something that the defenders, Källström and Elm didn't do well. Willhelmsson and Bajrami are the only players we have who can "göra sin kille" (dribble past the defender, one-on-one) and Bajrami, while promising, is more spectacular than he is effective.

I dont have to your doing it all by yourself.
You cant give him credit for good strikes and then take it away by saying they are cheap. I dont think anyone has ever been swayed on this forum Im not about to start trying now lol. If I were being a fan Id just say "yea cheap goals didnt deserve them end of story" doesnt matter if I'm wrong im a fan. Not this middle of the road contradictory stuff
I guess we'll just have to agree to disagree. Why can't a goal be cheap even though the strike is good? It's not contradictory at all. You mentioned Jelavic. It's a total gift of a goal, but his finish is all class. Let's say Voronin's shot in the first half goes in? It's a great strike, but it would have been a ridiculous gift from Isak if it went in.
Oh well, good night to you, sir. I will remain sad for the night and then regroup for the next two games. Congrats Ukraine. Lets go, Sweden!
What a horrendous display, embarrasing first half from the entire team. Our chances to qualify are now abysmal, 15%. I waited 2 years for this bullshit.
First half was some of the most terrible football I've seen from Sweden really. It took 21 (yes, 21, i checked) minutes until they passed the middle line offensively with the ball on the ground. And overall no offensive play whatsoever. Ironicly, when Sweden actually started to play properly, they went down 1-2 in 2nd half.
Lots of blaming going on though which I diagree with. The first goal could be called a defensive slipup, but thats debatable, it was a good attack. I dont really agree with the blame on Lustig though. Yes hes supposed to guard the post, but if the ball comes 20cm to more to the right he looks like a saving angel. And if he instead stands right next to the post then the ball will pass him on the other side in that case. The goalie wouldnt have stood a chance either way. Call it IRL-RNG if you like, but he just happened to be a few cm off where the ball came. To me, that goal was 90% schevchenko (spelling?) making an awesome header (yes it was really good, there was very little credit given on swedish TV, the header was very well placed next to the post and kept almost all speed from the corner kick, making it hard/impossible to react to) and 10% sweden possibly slipping up in that they let him get away to freely make that header.
Man, I fall asleep at the half time break and miss the second half FUUUU(it was like 4AM for me) wake up at 8 this morning the first thing I do is checking Livescore, and mother of god SHEVA. Just watch the highlights, Sheva is the best, can't believe what I just see.

haha, you better drink some red bull for Netherlands - Germany game. You don't want to be falling asleep in that one.

Agree with you completely. I commented on how poor Sweden looked initially in the game as well, it was really woeful. They did have their chances at the end however, and it could have ended in a draw if Elmander didn't sky that attempt.
Niether of the goals however can be particularly attributed to poor defense. The first one was a magnificent goal, created by two Ukrainian players (cant remember their names but maybe it was Yarmalenko and one other player) and beautifully finished by Sheva. Mellberg was the defending player but he was very close to Sheva, he was just beaten by a better player, no real shame in that. The second goal was some lackadaisical defense by Ibra, letting Sheva get open too easily but Lustig can't be blamed for that in any way. The header was simply to powerful and there was no way he could react to it. As Kreb pointed out, he could have been glued to the post and the header went 5 centimeteres to the right and you would still whine about it. Both goals were excellent.
As for Sweden's chances... I think they are similar to the Netherlands'. Both teams faced what was supposed to be the weakest opposition and both lost, now having to face the stronger teams and needing wins to progress. I think it will be tough, but if they can't get these wins, then they probably wouldnt get very far in the tournament anyways. The knockout stages have just come a little bit earlier then expected, thats all.
Good luck to both teams for the rest of the tournament.

It is United States of America, without the, even in American English. Although it is "the United States", because you do not specify which states those are but it is assumed that the states are American. Just so you know
Anyway, was it a fucking great game or what?! GO UKRAINE!!!
I`m glad that Sweden lost. I was rooting for them at the beginning, but when they didnt stop playing when there was a ukranian guy on the field with a injury and they scored, I lost all respect for them.

rofl, you don't stop playing at any point of time just because there is guy lying down. Not all guys lying down are dying of an heart attack or has a broken leg and needs the game to stop.
Sweden was in a good offensive position at that time and you just don't stop unless there is some serious shit going on in which case you'd be aware of.

While i dont necessairly disagree with you (as there are a lot of simulants in football today) the real stars would just kick the ball away like Zidanne for example

Not really .. . Its completely on the players volition when he has the ball and frankly if the opponent has gone down from something innocuous even Zidane isnt going kicking any balls out in the Euro's unless the opposing team goes balls out nuts complaining and stops playing (which is poor form and actually cheap so they dont do it).
Not like Zidane is some paragon of fair play.. you want to see fair play,
and even this is the exception not the rule. Hes well within his rights to bury that header.

Its just a spill over from the Soviet era.
It took my dad forever to stop calling the Czech Republic, Czechoslovakia or atleast it felt like forever. People will stop doing it eventually.
i actually think that wilhelmsson is pretty good, but why the fuck did they let Rosenberg play for so long? he didnt do anything good yesterday and wasnt at the right place a single time.
Also Lustig, worst game from him ever and i doubt that he will play like this the next game.
Sweden's mid midfielder didnt touch the ball on first Half so pretty much whole sweden sucked yesterday

U know that people in Football are "deadly injured" like 50times / game ye?
Ofc they wont play out the ball if they are in offensive? sure if they had the ball on own half around the defencemen they could play out the ball, but everyone in football nowadays are italians dying everyother minute

Honestly, this isn't something I have a problem with at all. As a matter of fact, I get pissed off when players stop playing because of someone lying down, writhing on the ground. You're supposed to play until the referee blows his whistle, and in the modern football there's just so much acting going on you can never know if the guy is actually hurt or not. I say keep playing.
Also, I wouldn't call Di Canio a paragon of fair play either. He has his moments, but he's also on the opposite side of the line more often than not, pushing referees and whatnot...

That was the irony I was trying to point out actually.
I don't get the point of ur debates,Sweden played how they had to play,it's not about fair play or simulations, every one got own "right" opinion,besides...
the game will be forgotten, but the result remains unchanged
P.S. Some of u may think, that what u see on ur TV can't be so painful, recommending u to play against good players with strong constitution as almost all the national Sweden team got, even a little touch while running, potentially, could be really painful and dangerous, and may cause an injure of different types. But the most serious injures,as i realise, can be caused when players goes to play harder and more dangerously, such as backtackling with two legs, and when a player injures himself,f.e when he unsuccessfully steppted his feet or smashed on the grass after heading

He was pretty good, he was the only one that actually dared to go 1vs1 in the offensive.
I really hope Rosenberg will watch the Euro 2012 from the sidelines in the upcoming matches.
Also how the hell didn't Lustig get replaced is beyond me.
A little sad about Sweden loosing, but we didn't play the best. Some players like Lustig were completely invisible the entire game. Happy for Schevchenko. Hope he gets to finish his amazing career with more goals like those he scored against us.
