sadly alot of people base their opinion on economics viablity or having disproportional clout or funds like kwark pointed out. the essence of new nationalism (not based on territoriality) is freedom and self-determination. what does this matter if Scotts receive more funds per vote or their vote have a heavier weigh on the political balance. the point is having a full grasp on their own lives politically and this translates in everyday life. My example is quebec cause that's where im from. we have voted massively agaisnt the current federal government and yet it is still in place because we have no true political weight.

heres a little explanation about culture/language/heritage. sociolinguists have for a longtime now worked on relations between language and thinking. indeed - and you will agree if you are perfectly bilingual - when we speak a certain language we have mental structure of thinking involved. this means that when i speak french i think anotherway i would than when i speak english. In countries with different cultures languages heritages (ways of thinking), how can anyone pretend to politically represent the ideas of both nations when both think culturally (which means in everyday's life) differently. as Quebecois we do not fit in canada. and some other studies by linguists have shown that cultural but foremost linguiticminorities tend to get sucked and assimilated by the majority. it is clear for us that we have a great chance of being assimilated due to the massive enlish influence (we're a 2% of pop that speak french in the whole america - you can tell the influence of english in our culture and discourse). And canadians know that, they just wont admit. some even say :"so you're letting off the french outside quebec" right! they're supposed to be canadian according to you arent they? they don't need us (normally) to defend their rights, because it should be clear for the federal government that these people have rights.

it has already happened with the natives of canada, whose language and culture were lost. rights of land, property and perenity of their territories were stolen. yet not long ago they asked for the redcross to aid them - in canada, a premier country with AAA+ credit shit thing - thats just the proof of how canada do not care about its own nations and a good reason for me to let us go.
