So now we are at the point where the Americans actually need Germans to clear their mess, who would have said that a couple of decades ago I still don´t know what is that KBB does so special, but he really is one of the few active mods on TL I have no bad feelings for. It's not a binding thing, I may at some point in the future take some kind of action if I feel it appropriate. It's more just a general disinclination to shit where I eat and the knowledge that were I to try and impose order on that topic I would be more zealous than I ought to be.

You have to admit, you're not immune to shitposting in that thread either.

Politics apparently have a weird influence on everybody, my advice is to just stay out of it because you're not going to convince anybody of anything anyway. Only thing that happens is that you're going to get upset on the internet and maybe get banned.

Talking politics through a medium like this forum is less about convincing others and more about convincing one's self with the threat of a ban overhead

I mostly post there for my own amusement. If it stops being an interesting discussion I walk away. There is nothing to be proven from this form of discussion since at the end of the day, no one here has political influence of note and few people will change their minds.

When it starts annoying me too much I ban them I think that for people who care at all about politics so much is at stake that we get emotional. We live a bit in an age of cynicism where the mantra is that caring too much about politics, society and the world is not cool, but the fact is, what is being discussed is our future and there are hardly more serious discussions. That it ends up being more heated than talking about nerfing siege tanks is kinda normal imo.
Also, when you talk about almost anything on an internet forum, you don't realize what truly separate you from other contributors. Then you get to a topic where people are advocating torture or being openly racist, and it becomes really hard to like them at all.
I find TL political forum fascinating because it gets me a window into what people with a completely different point of view (sometimes repulsive to me) think, and that's actually enlightening, if not disturbing. And those are people I just never, ever get to meet irl.
I think the political threads on TL are fine. They need heavy moderation, they often turn into liquid shit, but personally, I learnt a lot from them.

Convincing people is soooo much hard work. politics is nice; but so many people argue so poorly it's hard to be enthused. It's more fun when talking to people who're willing to listen, think, and change their mind. Of course it's a lot of work to do that too the problem is that the silent majority is silent! well, at least we made some progress cleaning up the thread today, yay progress!

Politics is not a good social topic in general. Usually, when I discuss my honest political beliefs with new people, they politely accept it and then jokingly mock it in every future conversation I have with them.
Could be just me, but I try to avoid the topic unless I think they'll agree with me.

Politics on TL seems to bring out the most vocal and extreme minority, even more so than most other topics (religion would be one of the exceptions). I'd love to have a relaxed exchange with an average Trump voter and try to pick his brain and understand what is going on.
But that's not what I'll get in a TL politics exchange. There will instead be the Trump extremist that zealously throws walls of text on me that probably isn't at all representative of why Trump is getting so much support in the general public. There will be ludicrous factual claims (on any side), that I just don't want to spend the time to verify or more frequently debunk. And things will go round and round and round with the same arguments, as none of the extremist posters (which are the only ones left) have the slightest intention of budging in the stance or leave the exchange, and are completely incapable and uninterested in understanding what the other side actually thinks.
So I'll continue to stay out of TL politics, tyvm.

If the poll I made in the US politics thread is any indication, the US politics are basically 2/3 Europeans. Definitely a very unusual perspective to be sure.
Also, English speakers is a very biased sample of political viewpoints in the world.

2/3 of US politic megathread viewers might be European, but I'm pretty sure that most of the posts are by Americans.

There's some stupid crap going on in AU. Maybe not trump or brexit level stupid, but pretty damn retarded still. But I wouldn't dram of discussing it on TL, according to earlier remarks.
