User was temp banned for this post. i had the feeling he was being sarcastic he was definitely being sarcastic, and I'm pretty sure it was a response to garbage like this: http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=418570¤tpage=55#1099 Wow, you're right. That is ambiguous. If he was trying to be sarcastic, he did a pretty poor job of conveying that. However I don't think that a simple misunderstanding is banworthy, though. Has he sent any of the mods a PM explaining what he was trying to say? Because if he was trying to be sarcastic then I think he should be unbanned. No reason to ban over a simple misunderstanding and poor word-choice.

Why did this banner thing even start? I don't get the alt either.
Maybe I should venture out of SC2 Tourneys once in a while

the [/s] might have meant sarcasm instead of signature.
just saying.

I think one of the best rules to follow on teamliquid is to never be sarcastic, especially if the sarcastic tone can warrant a ban. I've seen a few users banned for it (especially in LR threads) but luckily some of the time it does get over-turned
It reminds me of the "He's going to trash him" a few months (maybe weeks?) ago in a LR thread. A mod mistakenly thought the phrase was "he's a trash player" and temp banned the user. Luckily that was over-turned rather quickly.

Because if it isn't then we shouldn't place blame on users who are sarcastic. As I said before I think that guy could have worded his post a bit better but if he was in fact being sarcastic (and I think there's enough reasonable doubt so that if he PMs a mod and claims he was being sarcastic then we should believe him) then I think he should be unbanned.

As far as I know, no. But I myself wouldn't want to risk a ban on myself for trying to be humorous.

As another proponent of protecting netizens from banishment without due cause, I want to say that MooMu was almost certainly being sarcastic. The /s is supposed to be indicative of sarcasm, and if you read his post, the second bit seems to be a parody of the quoted phrase he is lampooning. (as daphreak was saying above)

We should PM some mods about this so that they can unban him ASAP. He was simply trying to use sarcasm to take down the bad-guys in that thread.
Edit: I sent a PM to KadaverBB asking him to give the ban a second look.

Sarcasm is fine if you are with people that know you, but if you are in a room with strangers and acquaintances, it is a poor decision. I'm sure most people have been at a gathering where the just-introduced-person makes a sarcastic crack and everyone rolls their eyes.
On the internet one should be even more careful because you cannot see the face or hear the voice.

On the internet one should be even more careful because you cannot see the face or hear the voice. I took the whole "spoken like a privileged straight person" far more offensively than sarcasm; but to each his own.

Whether his post was in good taste and whether he could have conveyed his post with more poise thematically is one thing; whether it warranted a ban may be another. Of course, ultimate moderation, or lack thereof, is completely at staff's discretion.

There were definitely quite a few posts I thought were somewhat ban worthy.

Indeed. In real life it's relatively easy to show others you are being sarcastic, merely by facial expressions / tone. On the internet, it's much much harder. Usually people use /s, or /sarcasm at the end of posts to show that they are in fact, not being serious.

I'd say in my capacity as a gay dude that I'd support Moomu being given the benefit of the doubt on this one. And it's not like I don't like reporting actual posts on the issue ^^

LGBT Pride month/week depending on where you are in the world. TLHQ is in NYC, so they timed it with that week.

I'm feeling pretty discriminated against that they didn't choose to use this banner when I go to Brighton pride in August, to be frank.

Sarcasm doesn't work in text.
You simply can't tell if it's sarcastic or not.
The line above could be sarcastic, how would you know?

Speak for yourself, I'm pretty good at discerning sarcasm in text

The line above could be sarcastic, how would you know? Speak for yourself, I'm pretty good at discerning sarcasm in text Also depends on the quality/context of the sarcasm. If I am trying to be sarcastic about the logo color changes, I would probably err on the side of caution and beat everyone over the head with it rather than leave any room for interpretation as some of our more recent bans have done.

Good thing the guy decided to add a [/s] at the end of his post then.
