DC LAN #14
Was thinking about doing an event in Feb but I'm going to skip that and focus on having a bigger one in March with bigger prize pool. Hopefully this will help if any players are considering driving in from a few hours away. I'll do much better promoting this event than the last one so its possible the prize pool also goes up. I know this is far in the future but I wanted to throw a thread up anyway, I don't expect much action here for a month at least, but, save the date!
When: Saturday March 15, 2014 (12PM-10PM)
Where: Monster PC: 7031 Little River Turnpike #13b, Annandale, VA 22003
What: Two concurrent Starcraft 2 HoTS live tournaments, one tournament open to all players and one for just diamond and below players. Costs $20 to enter one or both tournaments. (IF YOU ARE DIAMOND AND BELOW PLAYING IN BOTH IS STRONGLY ENCOURAGED AND COSTS NOTHING EXTRA) Spectating is free. (Limited spectating at the LAN center though, no viewing areas other than watching players monitors)
Open tournament (SC2): $500 1st: $250 2nd: $130 3rd: $80 4th: $40
Diamond and below: Prizes TBD (Depends on number of signups) 1st: TBD 2nd: TBD
Format/Rules: Double Elimination Bracket
For the diamond and below tournament you MUST not have gotten to any league higher than Diamond in HOTS. (I don't care about your WoL career) If I see any career leagues above Diamond in hots you will be instantly disqualified with no refund and if I find you were smurfing or using an alternate account you will be banned for life from all future DC LANS Semih style.
Map Pool: Alterzim Stronghold Heavy Rain Habitation Station Frost Polar Night Daedalus Point Yeonsu
How to sign up: Post in this thread with your *BNET AKA* and which events you'll play in (Open, Diamond or both)
Notes: Please join channel "DCLAN" on sc2 bnet when you arrive at the LAN center as we will use this channel for communication during the event since the LAN center is split into separate rooms.
Unfortunately the LAN center is a bit cramped so there isn't a whole lot of space for people who plan to just spectate the event. You can (and I recommend) bringing your own headset and mouse. Monitors and PC's are provided by the LAN center.
If you have any other questions before the event or during the event please let me know at any time, best way to contact me before the event is PM me here on TL.
If you are willing to volunteer for one of the below positions please let me know, I will need at least 2-3 people dedicated to helping with this, to keep players on schedule and tracking results if you can bring a laptop in order to not take up a tournament PC for entering results and bracket management that would be ideal, please PM me for more details. Also if you can donate anything to the prize pool it's much appreciated. I'm guaranteeing the prize pool, but spreading it out among multiple esports wallets is definitely more ideal for me.

Some important admin differences between this and past LAN'S to keep in mind:
- My start time is 1 hour later but we will be starting PROMPTLY at Noon this time. If you arrive any later than 1PM you WILL be w.o'd in round 1 and have to play from the losers bracket. Please text/msg me if you think you may be running late so I can add you in the bracket on the day of the LAN. (pm me for cell #) we will need to keep to a tight schedule this time because of point two below:
- The LAN center owner is no longer allowing me to use admin access for all people playing in the tournament. I don't think they like some people on PC's for 10+ hours without paying for it in past events. What does this mean? It means you have to pay $10 to the LAN center directly and register an ID number at the LAN center to log on to PC to play. Please arrive early in order to take care of this, especially if you have never registered at the LAN center before. $10 will then have to be paid to me which goes to prize pool.
Still a total cost of $20 for all players but I can't take all $20 of it anymore, sucks but I had no say in this unfortunately.
edit: I'm still in talks to the owner about allowing admin access to those still in the tournament after 5PM, to avoid anyone having to pay more than $10 to the LAN center. (it's $2/hr normal PC use cost) usually we have cut the player pool down quite a bit by then anyway so I will probably have them switch to admin for those who need it when we get close to 5PM.

Just talked to my friend yesterday about going, since he has some friends in DC. I haven't played since the last tournament but I'll definitely head over to watch/help with any administrative stuff! I'm also gonna stay the weekend this time so I don't almost fall asleep at the wheel lmao!

I quitted Sc2 for nearly 1 year , probably just come and watch, see u guys there !
|
This event is looking amazing! I'm glad so many people are going to be coming to watch/play. We've still got a couple weeks so be sure to continue to spread the word guys!
Also i'm saying this ahead of time and not just in the post LAN stuff. Come say hi to me when I'm casting all day, if IDK you or you don't know me introduce yourself! I can't go around and meet everyone like I would like with chaining myself to my computer for 11 hours
|
famousN.518 Currently Diamond, was Masters season 1/2 of HOTS (6% probably). Sign me up for Open.
Just for clarification, we do not bring our PCs, correct? This will be at a LAN center? So does the $20 entry fee INCLUDE the LAN fees? Or is it $20 entry for the tournament, and then $10 on top for computer usage?
|
@famousN the $20 should cover ur pc useage for only the sc2 tourney, make sure u bring ur own gear such as mice, keyboard, headset, etc. extra money for food/other things needed for human survival. there is 1 restroom in the BACK of the lan center. again the $20 only covers ur entry into the sc2 tourney/pc useage for said tourney.
|
Hey Rob I will be there i will play in the Diamond tournament. My bnet is Bizzaro #246
|
YelloOw.285 Sign me up I haven't played sc2 since DC Lan #12, I'm diamond now xD
|
Just as a note for those wondering, yes the $20 DOES cover your pc usage for while you are in the tournament. However, once you have been knocked out/once the tournament has progressed to a certain point the owner of the lan center will start shutting down people's computers if they are not still in the tournament. If you want to continue to play or ladder or just dick around on the computer once you've been eliminated plan on bringing some extra money to cover that. The hourly rate at Monster PC is $2 an hour and if you pay then you can stay on for as long as you pay for, just don't be surprised if they are more strict than they have been in the past about shutting down the computers for people who have been eliminated.
|
When will map pool be announced?
|
Whoops didn't realize I hadn't updated the map pool. Fixed that.
We're just one week from tomorrow! Hope to see everyone there. Should be a solid turnout.

What if we're Diamond now and havent been masters for a really long time?
|
Krosse / 492 Would liek to play in both diamond and below and the open bracket. Thanks!
|
my cutoff basically is hots, if you've been masters in hots (basically in the past year) I still consider you a masters level player who just hasn't put the games in.
as long as I have at least 8+ people for diamond and below I'm happy, I actually would rather not have too many people there otherwise things get crazy.
somebody give qxc a ride!! I think bonkarooni is from that area and he used to come, I wonder if he still plays. the greyhound stop isn't really convenient to annandale, annandale is about a 10 minute drive outside DC and not really on a metro stop, I can pick you up from DC in the morning if you end up greyhounding it though.
|
Sounds like lots of fun. Is anyone coming from Philly by any chance? I can't commit to going, but it would be cool to play in an offline SC2 event. I haven't been to one in a long time.
@QXC/Luckyfool Megabus goes from Pittsburgh to DC, but it's a really long drive - and costs like 30 bucks.
|
United States1537 Posts
I'm driving from Rochester, NY Friday afternoon, not sure which way down PA I'm going though, I remember last time I went down route 15.
|
QXC, I can't get you from Pittsburgh, but I can get you from Union Station which is where both Greyhound and Megabus let off. And to be honest if you're willing to ride a bit longer I'd recommend Megabus, definitely cheaper than Greyhound. Hit me up on skype byron.felt or shoot me a text 703-638-3180 if you need a ride. I'm basically the unofficial taxi for the group. ^_^
|
I can vouch for Ochrow, he's given me rides to DC starcraft things 15+ times and hasn't violated me yet.
|
Also, QXC, if it would be easier for you to get to Baltimore there are a few people who could pick you up from there, they offered in our group's skype chat. So depending on a9arnn's ability to grab you from Pittsburgh, if you can get to anywhere in the DC/Baltimore area we should be able to pick you up.
|
So quick update for everyone that hasn't heard we will be having some great coverage this coming weekend.
Deadly Gaming's Minny is coming to not only play in the event but also do some behind the scenes footage/interview videos. Richard(a9arnn) will also be helping out with the interview side of things this weekend. So if either of them come up to you and ask about an interview try and make a little bit of time during the day to meet with them
Last update Boisterous, one of my co-casters from the DETL will be coming out and helping with casting for the event!
|
Something came up and I have to back out =| Ill play next time!
|
Will there be a stream? (Possibly with a link?)
|
Yes Nanman will be streaming the entire event. The stream will be linked under the calendar entry for the event during the day tomorrow and we will link it here
Damn there are so many people signed up, this is so awesome. We almost have enough to do groups!
|
I'm going to try to make it on time. Please enter Battlenet ID AslanVondran#138 aka Eris into both tournaments.

I'm gonna make a liquipedia page for the event, are there going to be groups or just a bracket?
|
Hey Rob. So my fiance is running int he marathon tomorrow morning. I have been compelled (against my will) to be there at the finish line. However, the city will be a complete cluster fuck of fuckery, and I will run late to the lan. If I am to late can you please allow me to compete? even if it means starting from the loser bracket? Thanks
|
Richard- Just a bracket, not quite enough for groups although it would be possible. (harder to manage though)
Erik- that's ok, generally there's an hour per round so until 1PM there isn't much risk of getting kicked down to losers bracket. ur fiance better run fast anyway though, I ran the MCM last year, marathons are def hardcore.
|
OMG why must i have a life TT i really wish i wasnt busy.really every single time one of these is happening i have to be doing something and the fact that qxc might come one of my favorite players will be there makes me even more sad TT. gl everyone hope you all have alot of fun
|
all 7 players that I found in TLPD for this event are Terran, lol that player list.
DC is officially a terran stronghold...and this isn't counting ancient legends like theognis...and nyoken...

T'was a very fun time. One day I'll make it to the after-lan-dinner. Fiance at home wasn't too happy with me being gone all day being a huge nerd =(
But, jeffrey had fun.

How about we thank Rob lol.
Without him there would be NO event. He spent a lot of time getting people and administering the event, making sure no problems, and even paying out of pocket for some people's extra time!
Thanks for everything you've done, Rob!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! We appreciate u!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Great day yesterday, thanks to everyone who donated to the prize pool, it really means alot. Thanks Peter and Byron especially for handling the whole time/pc issue. LAN center not giving me unlimited time on PC's anymore added a new challenge this time but we managed it fairly well.
I am going to talk to the LAN center owner and hopefully improve that, 6 hours of time covers the majority of the players but then we have to worry about anyone still there after 6 which turned out to be 15 or so people which wasn't really ideal. Having two tournaments at the same time worked out fairly decently although some players did have to wait forever for some matches...
Thanks Nanman and Boisterous for casting as well.
I love how huge the after dinners are now lol, I didn't get an official number last night but it was the first time I remember basically 4 full tables (and some?) there was at least 32 people at dinner after, that is so sick.
Next LAN should hopefully be in early May, thinking May 3rd maybe, cuz I can't do 10 or 17. Will need to confirm that with the LAN center and others before its final though.
Almost forgot a couple player shoutouts-
TyrantJunior placing 5th (best finish at a DC LAN?) Bizzaro for being the only Protoss player in the entire event yesterday. (and also winning the diamond and below tournament)

Dinner is always the funnest part, and I counted a full 36 people (the tables on our side had 10 each and your side had 8 each table I believe!)! I can't wait for the next DC LAN, hopefully they won't be too frequent!!!

As always big thank you to everyone who came out to play in the event! You guys provided some very entertaining games to cast up all day long. Thanks to all the viewers on stream who stuck with us most of the day or just tuned in for specific matches we really appreciate the support you guys give to local events! Thanks to Boisterous for flying down to his first LAN and casting it up with me all day long!
Big shout out of course goes to Rob for setting up these events and coordinating everything with the LAN center ahead of time as well as helping to set up and run the event while still playing in it. Thanks to everyone else who helped to run the event/bracket side of things Richard and Peter (Not sure if anyone else was helping out sorry).
Another big thanks to Minny and Richard for helping out with the media/coverage side of things. Minny was able to bring all of her equipment down for doing behind the scenes/interviews. Richard of course running around with the microphone all day asking some great questions. Minny is currently editing and throwing together the interviews so keep an eye out for links on those.
Also thanks to those players that came up and introduced yourself to me or came up and said hi during the event/dinner. I wish I could just go around and chat with everyone at the LAN even for a couple minutes but I never have time T_T So please keep swinging by the caster area at future LANs!
See you guys in May :D
