What's going on?!
Finally, after a long wait due to MLG and issues with previous locations, we have decided that it is time to host another LuckyFool/Torenhire LAN in the Northern Virginia area. Only one thing, Rob isn't hosting!
It's really lame for Rob to be playing and also helping try to run the tournament, so he and I decided that since I run the tournament itself anyways, I can (hopefully) take over the organization portion as well. I'll probably still call on him for help at times...but don't tell him that!
Everyone who has been to a LAN hosted by the two of us can attest to our epic and amazing LANs! There's no reason not to show up - come and play SC2, come and play BW for lols (there will be BW!), come and hang out and chat! There may also be a mafia game in the works! We're all friends here in the DC area via our TL threads, this is a perfect time to actually hang out in person! Everybody here is very friendly, don't be afraid to chat with anyone!
If you were around for DC Lan #6 at Cybergrounds, you'll know that Rob and I were chatting about doing a dual tournament - one for Diamond and below, one for all leagues. I think we are going to start the new year off with a new format!
As usual, we have a 20 dollar registration fee. Ten dollars of your registration goes to Netolic, and the other ten goes to the prize pool for the main tournament. We will have prizes for the Diamond and below tournament, but we don't know what just yet! You are allowed to play in both tournaments! You must pay the 20 dollars even if you are ONLY playing in the Diamond and under tournament.
Spectators will not need to pay this fee, but keep in mind that you will NOT be permitted onto a PC if you do not pay. We have had a few issues with this in the past - one of the reasons Cyberground got iffy with us, I believe - and we will be "moderating" this a little closer.
For the record, we did not get kicked out of Cybergrounds because we had people skip on fees. Once every two or three LANs we would be short 20 or 40 bucks and we'd have to pay out of our own pocket. This lead the managers there to be very strict about play times and this is possibly the reason they got so harsh on us with the "once you lose you are off the PC" If you do not want this to happen again, then be honest and pay up (as in the 10 dollars to Netolic), even if you are only laddering or goofing off in 4v4 with people in the tournament. I don't want to give off the impression that we've got a bad history with this, but it HAS come up at previous LANs. And it shouldn't, every one of us is better than that.

When: Jan 21st. Sign in starts at 11:00am. Tournament needs to be running by noon. Please be on time for signups, please give yourself plenty of time to warm up and get a practice game (or three!) in. The sign in time is for both open and diamond tournaments.
Prizes?? The prize pool for the main tourmanent is dependant on how many people show up, unless we get a sponsor or get some donations. I can give a ballpark once we get some interest! (PS this is good incentive to bring friends and spread the word!!)
For the Diamond and below tournament, we will likely have a small cash prize and maybe a few pieces of gear to hand out!
Format: The main tournament will be our usual format: Everyone starts out in a group - games are BO1 and top two players* advance into a single elimination bracket consisting of BO3 - finals will be BO5.
The Diamond Tournament will be a double elimination bracket** * Number of matches played and number of people who advance will depend on number of players. ** Diamond and below tournament format subject to change, pending number of signups.
Rules: Will be posted once we have an idea of number of players! General rules will be the same as previous LANs, in terms of disconnects, map choosing, etc. Refer to prior threads by searching "DC LAN" in TL Search box.
Casters: Nanman from LXG is going to cast! Yay!
He's open to co-casters so if you email me contact info, you guys can work out trading off casts, or dualcasting, etc. The LAN center only has enough for one stream however so you'll have to pick a stream to use!

This is how you get there. You'll come in on "LITTLE RIVER TURNPIKE (route 236)" which is the RED road.

I made a black circle on the bottom right corner of the square shaped building. There is a door there, go inside that door, go up to the second floor. Go all the way to the VERY end of the hallway. Netolic is the last door on the right. There's a shitton of comic books in the entry room, then all the PCs in the back.

Might want to check out the Bolt Bus here. Somewhat cheap rates and goes directly from NYC to DC (Union Station). Looks like prices are usually around $20. There might be cheaper busses out there going from NYC Chinatown to DC Chinatown, but I'm kind of lazy right now.

We live near the Washington National Cathedral. We can get to the metro and get out of the city if that is more convenient for our ride. We would just need a ride into and out of the city. If someone wants to be our ride, they can PM me and I can give them contact info etc.
Setting up a mafia game isn't too hard. All you really need is a decently balanced setup and enough people interested in playing (8-9 people and a host works great, but we can fudge the numbers a bit to make it work with more or less).

They got a backroom that is being used as storage, but I think you can convince them to set it up as a caster booth

I play SC2 way more than LoL -.- Just because I haven't been streaming doesn't mean I stopped; I uploaded 41 VODs to YT last month.
I am generally busy on weekends now and doubt I would be able to donate an entire day and anything less isn't really worth the drive. They aren't 100% sure how open the LAN center will be for the month of January. We asked tonight and they said they might have to push us back into Feb. -________-
Mr Kim from Cybergrounds is back! This is the guy we did the first three LANs with, aka the chill and fucking awesome guy who basically let us have the place for the day. He called up Rob and was like, yo, what's the deal? Rob is gonna call him tomorrow and see what's up with Cybergrounds...

Does anyone have the number to this location? I am trying to find my little brother (21), who has been missing for almost 2 days. We were told that he was headed to this place, but nobody has seen or heard from him since and he missed 2 appts he had today. Needless to say, we are very worried about him! The only number I find online does not work. Please help!! We are desperate to find him. I need to know if he was seen there the other night. I live in TX and can't just drive over there to ask. It is not like him to just not go home and to miss important appointments. Thanks in advance. Aimee

I'm pretty sure you've got the proper number... They're doing a lot or renovations so it's possible your call got missed.
I thought I explained it well enough to convey that, but TLDR: owner of Cybergrounds left for korea, temporary owner didn't like us for w/e reason, things got miserable, we found Netolic.
Most people didn't, just because we never really made a huge deal about it. Generally Rob and I threw in when we were missing for this or that reason. It was never a big deal, but I wanted to put it out there just so we don't have to go over the whole LAN center asking us why we're 20 bucks short haha.

Oh sick. Little River Turnpike. I remember I used to take that road when I went to NVCC. It's so cool to hear of LANs right near my home. Too bad that's going to be a time where people are back at school. I'll probably be able to take the weekend off and drive up but most of my friends who play Sc2 most likely wont be able too
It's amazing how terrible of an online presence netolic has, a google search brings up this topic as the #2 result for me...I assume that's how aimee found us lol. Really glad everything worked out for that. Definitely not something I would have expected to help out with.

Yes I am in constant communication with staff, they are ready to host this event no problem.
They had to consolidate the comic book store with the LAN center because rent was getting insane. So they were closed for a week or so while that was happening.

Absolutely. The LANs are more like 70% gaming and 30% social events. The DC community is pretty friendly and close-knit and we all seem to sort of know each other by now, there's no reason new folks can't become part of that. ^^
I don't play SC2 at all and I'd still be going even if I weren't hosting. :D
Just don't be afraid to float around and chat with people. Don't bug someone while they're in a game and it'll all be good!
Also I'd just like to throw this out now so people know, after 8pm if you are eliminated from the tournament, I have to start getting people off PCs. Netolic has a lot more regulars than CG, and 8pm is MORE than late enough not to interfere with the tournament. We have the PCs the entire day from 11am-8pm though.
TBH a lot of people leave well before then, and some people don't hang out to watch the rest of the tournament, so we might not have to ask people to get off computers either way, but just in case it comes up!
I think this is shaping up to being one of the most bad ass lans of the new year. Now if i can just stop playing mass effect and get back to practicing my SC2 T.T

Um if you have never been to a live person lan understandable, (Always bring your own headset/mice/keyboard/mousepad/etc. etc.) the ones at the lans are usually pretty horrendous and unusable and that is if they even have them. If u ever decide to go to an MLG in 2012 they dont even have anything but the CPU/Monitor at ever numbered station.

That is the front of the building. It'll be a lot harder to spot at night, but that's it. Look for the signs on the first floor. Netolic is floor #2
This is how you get there. You'll come in on "LITTLE RIVER TURNPIKE (route 236)" which is the RED road.
You'll turn onto the BLUE road (MARKHAM STREET or something similar)
Park in the PARKING LOT I have labeled in GREEN
I made a BLACK CIRCLE on the bottom right corner of the square shaped building. There is a DOOR there, go inside that door, go up to the second floor. Go all the way to the very end of the hallway. Netolic is the last door on the right. There's a shitton of comic books in the entry room, then all the PCs in the back.
Look for truckasaurus in that parking lot, it's got the gold TL logo on the back. You'll see it if you're in the right place.

I've been to all of these DC SC2 Lans, and damn i remember after the game was released and i was the one of the last zergs left in the tournament almost every single time. Now i'm not as good, simply because i havn't been playing/caring as much (also ZvZ is a fucking mystery to me so we'll see how i do tomorrow)
But it's okay because we all know who the 3 best zergs are in the tourniment

LAN is still a GO despite a bit of snow/icy shiz last night in DC it looks like the main roads are fine. Torenhire and I should be at the lan center at around 10:45 or 11am.
Things aren't looking too bad on the western front LXG should be arriving around 11! ^_^ GL HF to everyone playing and remember Saftey first than Team Work!

Thanks for running such a great event...sorry A51 players had to dip alil early....All 3 of us were 4-5 hour drives....which woulda been even more difficult if we left later...but I wish we could have stayed....This LAN event was by far the most fun compared to the other events i have been in....and also Thanks to Nanman for casting all my games ....it made me extremely happy....I hope there are many more lans like these 2 come....
Fantastic LAN. Toren ran a phenomenal 2 tournament day. Casting was a blast. I'm pretty sure the dudes on the Casting Couch had the most fun today. So happy to meet new DC area guys and meet up with old buds as well. Can't wait for the next event!
If you went to KBBQ afterward (which you all should have, it was a fucking blast) Ryan aka Hooktits/Hatchetwound had some vehicle issues...his brake lines ruptured or something and his front brakes stopped working...
DocFletch called AAA (thanks bro, I would have called but you beat me to it! :p) and got him a tow truck...but then we're like fuck now what do we do. We got him towed to a service station, the tow truck driver ended up being a huge ravens fan, and if any of you know Ryan's van...he's got like 1000 Raven's magnets stuck to it, so the driver was like OH SHIEEETT and towed us to a much nicer service station for free.
Then he and I went hotel-hopping to see who would give him a room for the night, he's staying at a place by dulles airport...first place we found that had a room. We pulled up to some hotel that had like 0 cars in front of it and they were like "....uh sorry we're sold out" and I was like OH FUCK NO but Ryan dragged me outta there.
Hopefully his van is an easy fix and he can be on his merry way tomorrow...
when I'm not so tired I'll do a tournament write up here, we got some good interviews courtesy of the Tits Media team (SacredSystem and Sadistx) that might go up soon as well.

Had a good time. My wife decided to come, with my kid, just to see what was up. She was pretty bored, but I had a great time getting 1-1-1'd by Avilo in the Open and I really enjoyed the Diamond/under tourney. FiveHundred had an epic run in the loser's bracket, it was a privilege to be eliminated by him.

I think the diamond and under tourney was great as well, i think it was a huge success and i hope that it can become a staple in future dc lans to come! I want to send a big thanks to Doc fletch, my manager torenhire, the nice guy from netolic, (fivehundred i think) for offering to give me a place to stay, and thx to every one else for making the event possible. Big thanks to rob luckyfool and travis torenhire for making the event run as smoothly as humanly possible. Keep up the good work, i think it would be awesome to have a camera of some kind at future events so that the netizens of teamliquid can get a birds eye view of whats its like to be at the lan center, perhaps it will help entice some more people to come, who knows some day we could be renting out an entire convention center like MLG for the dc lan... rofl waffle rofl. Mommy(she's not my real mommy :D) and I would also apologize if we can't host the next tournament. There are talks about moving the PC place to another location nearby annandale. I am trying to convince her as much as my charm can handle to arrange the new place to better fit the tournament. We will have to see though. I will try my best to get more updates as much as i can through our facebook page.

Hey guys yet again another awesome successful DC LAN :D Big thanks to Torenhire for setting everything up and managing the stress of having half as many computers as expected while trying to run two tournaments at once! Grats to Avilo for winning yet again. And thanks to NanMan for doing an awesome job casting and being so nice and letting basically anyone join him in on the casting couch, which btw was a perfect set up for casting! Can't wait for the next LAN! these are always a blast even if I get rolled! Loved the diamond and below portion of the tournament (sadly I didn't get 1st T_T but I still feel great about the games I played, proud of my performance and big thanks to the help of all the players on my team LXG)!
And if you guys didn't get to go to Korean BBQ afterwards you are truly missing out, it is the best! so definitely try and make it there next LAN! :D
i just finished reading the interviews posted by focus, i enjoyed reading them very much! I love all the coverage from these events and i am soo happy to see people taking the initiative (hope i spelled that right) to take pictures, conduct interviews, cast the event, and take video footage as well. I think its really great and look forward to looking over all of it ^_^
Im going to pick up my van today, the whole ordeal damn near cost me a whole weeks worth of pay t.t but none the less i will be happy to have my means of transportation back, i feel naked without it.
