The TL staff that consists of lazy, out of shape ESPORTS workers officially challenges prominent SC2 pro teams (and MLG or Justin.tv staff) that wishes to compete in a very short distance (sprint) relay race at MLG Columbus. We will find a field some where and conduct the relay race. It will be filmed and put on YouTube. The winner will receive universal acclaim and bragging rights, the losers will be publicly shamed through internet video.
Your relay race team must have at least 5 team members. All must be official members of your team / organization. If you do not have enough players attending MLG Columbus, managers can participate.
Please respond to this thread if you would like to participate. If the TL staff do not receive any acceptances we will declare ourselves the "most athletic."
Hopefully TeamLiquid team accepts the challenge (if they are eligible to race), since Tyler is track athlete, Huk is a soccer pro and I imagne Jinro has long gorilla legs.
edit: oh snap, qxc "mr parkour" riley is probably the last guy you'd want to participate. :lol Good thing it's a relay race so other teams still have a chance!

Man Hot_Bid is the most gosu obs in the world, very handsome, attractive, not unattractive AND fast!? What doesn't that guy have <3 I second the hyper commentator idea =D

Can there be some up-keeping of starcraft values? Jeebus, this is a 1v1 game - there should be 1v1 races for prizes and team games for fun! It only makes logical sense.

nothing brings the spirit of winner's league into athletics like a relay race! it's too bad i won't be at columbus since people have been known to call me usain bolt from time to time
Lol, I'd love to see Tyler, HuK, Haypro, Ret, Jinro, TLO and any other TL member run in a race. Would just be funny because most people have the stereotype of video game nerds being unathletic.
Though HuK is pretty decent at Soccer I hear, so no surprise from him if he did well.
My money is on TL player team, I mean Tyler looks fast as hell, Jinro used to do some martial arts? And HuK is tiny and fast. Haypro got long runner legs and Ret will prolly just boss mode last lap!
Any decisions on where you'll be holding this? There are plenty of athletic fields around the Ohio State campus, which about 3 miles north of the convention center. Also, although not a pro team, I'm sure the Ohio State CSL team would be glad to compete if allowed. (We'll definitely have at least 5 players competing at MLG, probably more.)

LOL.
I dunno, I think haypro is the weakest link. I imagine him getting shoved up there by everyone, and then just sort of languishing through his lap, not wanting to look like a try-hard.

Tyler from what I'm aware was like an all american distance runner for Duke lol, thats no joke. Even if he ran marathons his short distance speed would probably trump many nerds.
I used to throw javelin for Track back in High School so I was around these numbers quite a bit
In case you guys don't know, a 1:53 in the 800m is insane, anything sub 2:00 will basically beat out anyone at MLG that didn't also run Track at a competitive level.

I don't know man, I think Hot_bid looks pretty fast..
Tyler should definitely wear the shirt iNcontroL was planning to design for him on SotG for another MLG a while ago. i think they forgot about it but wearing it while running would be the best chance to remember that bet :D
Well I don't know if my team would be allowed to compete because we might not qualify as pro, but I'll post a picture I found of sixjax's team. All have insanely low bmi and would look great in speedos! + Show Spoiler +
That's them in the background, chilling in sandals, sitting around watching idra jog, and phoning some bros after finishing the race.
imo IdrA vs HuK in the last lap, HuK will throw the baton over the finish line, IdrA will stop because of rules imba, HuK will let him know that he wasn't loss.
Seriously though I would pay money to see IdrA in a footrace lol.
I'm in Columbus, and Goodale Park has enough room to run around in, but not an actual track. Might be a bit hard to find that in the middle of town. Fred Beekman park on the West Campus of OSU also has a lot of room, but not a track if I remember correctly.
I doubt Idra would participate in this as I'm sure there is a clause in his contract somewhere that forbids him from participating in such life-threatening activities.

I'm pretty sure the Beekman park on West Campus has a mile-track, though not a 'track' in the traditional sense. There's lots of space at OSU for an event like this to occur, at least somewhere. Other than OSU, I'm not sure where'd be a good place to hold something like this.

Yeah, as I suggested earlier in this thread, I think OSU would be a good location, either at Fred Beekman, or the fields by Lincoln/Morril towers (or even around the Horseshoe ).
On that same note: would the OSU CSL team be allowed to compete or is this strictly for pro teams? (If everything goes well we should have at lest 5 participants in MLG.)

There's no way that Slasher talks this much trash and doesn't actually participate. It's a race between the SC2 community site (TL) and their staff and they don't have their community correspondent (or w/e Slasher's job title is) racing?

Also, the Columbus convention center is surrounded by highway and parking lot, the closest safe fields are probably at OSU
There are a few parks(small ones though) near the convention center. Will not be to hard to find one in walking distance or at worst a couple minutes drive. All the fields around OSU are on center/north side of campus so that would be a good 15-20 drive. If they need more space then what is around downtown then Berliner park is probably the closest thing and is just down High St.

Do you know how fast you have to run to get a 4:23 mile? If he ran just his mile pace, he would probably be faster than anyone elses sprint speed.
Showed promise as a high school junior, anchoring his team to a Texas Relays title in the sprint medley ... has run a 4:23 1,600m, has split 48 point in the 4x400m and owns an 800m best of 1:53.63
Damn, in high school my cross country team took 6th in state in the 2nd best CC state in the country. I thought I was fast with a 4:40 mile time. 4:23 is like running balls out the entire time.
Edit: I'm not sure what 48 point in the 4x400 means, but if he runs a 1:53 800 meter, then he probably runs somewhere around a 50 second 400, which is just ridiculous. i can guarantee he'll be the fastest person there.

I dont believe its true. 48s requires serious training for a couple of years.
Yes and he ran track and field at Duke. While I have no clue how good Duke's track and field program is, I'd think it's at least somewhat high caliber. Additionally, I google'd his name with track and his Duke bio said he ran a 48 split in a 4x400.
Look, I really don't think that a race is fair considering the physical shape of many pro gamers. Can it be full contact sprints just so everyone has a fair shot at winning within the first 5M? Ex. Incontrol tackles Huk - and allows EG a better chance at winning with Idras 1337 sprinting skills?

Duke's team is really really good. My friend is a top track athlete in Arizona, and Duke told him he would have to be top 5 in the state before they even consider looking at him. When he did reach that goal this year, they still said he probably did not have a good chance at getting money from the program.

I feel like this is TL's secret ploy to make other team focus more on track training and thus come underprepared for MLG columbus so Liquid players can laugh their way to a clean podium sweep.
What kind of relay race it will be? Brutal 5 x 1km race? A "I can't play after that" 5 member beer marathon? Or just an ordinary 5x100m or something like that?

Any chance of a Decorah Eagles team? Also, I demand a team with Uniden and other Funday Monday notables.
And TB would be the perfect caster for this with his tendency of using the word "trunk" when announcing players.
I recently checked up on the Baby Eagles stream, and it seems that the baby eagles are growing quite large. It seems like yesterday that they were only cute little chicks, but now the feathers of adulthood are beginning to grow out. The baby birds are becoming quite fierce.

Any rules to this race? I can imagine competitors getting Clotheslined by incontrol while Idra casually walks down the race with a huge grin. EG has to represent.
Unfortunately since I am not a professional relay-racer I'm not sure I would be qualified to cast this solo. Will need an analytical co-caster to assist.

We'll pair you with Day9. He can explain the mechanics of Idra's stride for you!

Hahaha this is the best idea ever! Glad all the teams are accepting the challenge and are going to spend their entire time practicing for the MLG SC2 Tournament Relay Race!
Imagine the drama if Cruncher and Idra are both running the same leg of the race..... Actually imagine if Idra is running his leg of the race with the other racers being Protoss players....

Woah... That's hecka evil but possibly even true haha! Nah, Kiwi has to get second place, its tradition... Besides that though...
This is going to be unbelievably epic. More so than the the event itself in my opinion. The SC2 prize money should be split in half and allotted partially to the winner of this event.

In the race, other way around! MLG staff are just too fit. Maybe TL will get second.

Hmmm, seems he was slightly faster than me at the shorter distances, seems to get slower the longer it goes on. Texas always has beast track runners though! I ran a 1:55 half in HS and had some quicker times in college, though at longer distances. I ran a 1:53ish split in the DMR my freshman year of college. This is shaping up to be quite a race!
I am in Nebraska right now at djWHEATS house and we just got back from a morning training run. While we are mortal enemies now on the track, you should see how baller he looks running with a cig in his mouth...so gosu!

I was in crunch time trying to study before a Chinese quiz when I happened to see this thread on the homepage when I opened up Chrome. Damn you all for taken away 15 precious minutes of mine but thank you so much for the excitement I now have to watch this come MLG time.
By far my favorite quote has been from Sundance..."Our stream may not run but we do."
Ok I just thought of a way to add some regional flavor to the Anaheim MLG. We should alter the competition so that it is a biathalon in which participants will run a certain distance with pistols holstered, when the distance is reached he will un-holster and fire at stationary targets. Scoring will be calculated similarly to the winter version. I think this would increase the survivability of contestants and just be a very fun addition to the competition.

I hope somebody video documents this ^_^ The community would love to see this I would imagine haha, thanks for organizing this hotbid, where would sc2 be without you? :D
Meh, I can't do it. :/ ... So stupid to have it before a lot of people get in. VT won't be able to participate, we'll be driving people from the airport
This is happening at 8:30 tonight. Why is it not in the TL event calendar? Seriously, would love to watch this streamed. Hope somebody makes it happen.
Didn't Gunrun promise to have a stream running for this? Surely failing to deliver on such a promise for event as prestigious and anticipated as this would have severe consequences.

is tyler running for TL? didnt he say he used to run track
He sure looks like he did, haha.
Yeah at like college division 1 level, TL should slaughter between him and kennigit if TL is running as admins + the team. If not tylers got some carrying to do xD
7 of the 11 registered teams flaked out of a MLG tournament.. I suppose it's just coincidence it happened to be a competition for who can run the fastest?

lol, this hsould have been hyped more. Like, when I first read the thread I was all hyped and shit, but then I forgot about it. Didn't know it was happening today, missed the whole thing.
Also think it would have been better if there were more videos before the race, showing the players and everything. Interviews or something maybe.
Still, was awesome. =D The 1080p video was sick. This MUST become MLG tradition!

Holy crap Hot_Bid making the rest of his team look bad (except Tyler). You could see qxc ready to shoot out of there, but it was too late. Some pretty pro race announcing from Joshy, too.
Obviously times are not exact and some had to be estimated with the video I have. :p
People like you are the reason this community is awesome. :D Thanks for putting that effort in.
Thanks, hopefully HotBid can add to OP when he gets some time.
awesome work, but how did you figure out some of those times that couldnt be seen from the HD video? did you use that other low quality video combined with the HD one to figure them out, after some addition/subtraction/etc ?

I attempted that at first but referencing the low quality video didn't help fill in any big holes from the high quality vid (I don't think it did anyway) so it was just an approximation judging from how close player x was from tagging player y when the camera cut off of them. There wasn't any math involved :p
That was a great race, it was really hard to tell who people were (almost got a lil sick by the camera at the end, haha) but nice work. Hope TL takes Number 1 at the real MLG competition though.
On June 03 2011 13:34 KimJongChill wrote: Honestly, I can't find Idra in this vid at all. It's incontrol, then machine, then wat??
Idra was the last guy to run for EG and the camera was focusing on Tyler and the MLG guy so you didn't get to see him really since EG was quite far behind.
For EG it was: Incontrol -> Machine -> Axslav -> LzGamer -> Idra

Because they follow progaming well enough to know that QXC isn't on EG, but FXO. Also, he's clearly visible in the videos.

Oh my god, that was awesome. A lot of these guys are faster than you'd think. And <3 Slasher. We're gonna have to listen to his glorious run for the next ten episodes of Live on three...
Looks like Geoff almost ate it midway through his run. I think you can hear him talking about it at the end of Joshy's video. I've had that exact feeling before when running as fast as I possibly could. Right before actually falling 5-10 steps after I first felt like I was going to. I was luckily on an artificial turf field. I'm glad he didn't fall because that would have just been scary.
After some careful and in depth analysis of the video it looks like inControl pulls a muscle half way along his leg. Also, based on the performances of Slasher, H to the otbid and Tyler wearing a headband is worth at least 0.5 sec and all professional athletics bodies should immediately invest in some form of headband if they want their athletes to continue being competitive in the world scene. It was a poor choice for QXC to not wear at least a bandana.
Someone posted the first footage I got up for compLexity (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bp5dHjXLRqw) but I got more footage that I couldn't prioritize. There is some more stuff from before and after the event still on my camera, working on it. =)
Today's the actual event though so I'm going to be really busy with all of that stuff. x.x
All in all, fun race, and fyi the FXO runner nobody can seem to identify is FXOUnstable, a caster/manager/I'mnotsure. =)
Haha, poor TLO in JoshSuth's HQ video. "Oh yeah someone just told me I was going to be running. I don't even have any running shoes, I need to do it barefoot."
Will update as I time the rest Hot_Bid knew what he was doing when he proposed the relay race And wow, Tyler was fast O_O
Well if the organizers had let Machine and Idra spread creep they would have been less than a second from MLG, and TL. So I call shenanigans.
Oh shit, no wonder Tyler is fast, guy was a middle distance runner in college with 1:53 800m and 4:2X 1600m. That's some wheels to be moving like that. Wouldn't be at all surprised if he had quarter speed in the low 50's or even high 40's.

With no offense to Tyler, I think this is worth correcting that I think those are this highschool times as he went to Duke and those times are pretty slow for a D1 college runner but pretty good for a highschool runner. Probably good enough to make regionals, but not state judging from my highschool running memory.

In our school in Ninth grade (you're 16) the record on 1500m is 4.44, we must be reaaaally slow? T_T
Also congrats MLG, sick runners, was rooting for FXO though

High school times, probably. But a 1:53 and a 4:2X in 800m/1600m respectively are state qualifiers in NY when I was in, if not place very highly.

No those times are extremely fast for any Division in college. For example a good 800m time for high school is 2:00. The kids who break 2:00 are the kids who run for d1 schools.

Incontrol said in an interview somewhere during MLG that the shoes he wore weren't specifically for running, so he slowed down halfway because his shoes were coming off? or something like that. I will try and find the interview and edit it in.
I need to see the full lineup for each team for this event before I can place my bet...if it's the same people running, I would bet on MLG again. But, if the lineups change...I could see TL taking it.
