Just wanted to bump this. Only 15 people have signed up so far for the May 7th GeekBox tournament. C'mon guys, surely there are more than 15 players that can go to this. Spread the word so we don't lose out on this awesome opportunity for free stuff and sponsorship by such a wonderful company like GeekBox! Even if your not a top player, still sign up and enjoy the LAN and good company. Everyone has a chance to win something through our giveaways. SO GO...NOW...SIGN UP! :D

GeekBox guys are the shit. Seriously. I will do everything I can to make this.
Just to give you guys an idea how sick they are as sponsors my friends and I EACH won PCs worth almost $2k for winning the MW2 tournament last year.
They are serious about helping and building the local gaming community. Most, if not all, are gamers and have gamer mentalities when it comes to most topics. They are very fair, open, and respectful. I advise you to be the same to them and it will always be a great experience for everyone.

Hey everyone! I had no idea that Utah had it's own SC2 community that is actively engaged in tournaments etc. I'm just here to announce that I'll be participating in this future tournaments as much as possible. I'm a part of VP, and plan on representing them in Utah (since I am the highest ranked player from Utah in VP) and plan on bringing a few other masters level players along with me.

We're ready to make a splash in Utah!

If I can find a way to come I will. The BYOC is gonna be a pain though. I worry that will keep people from coming. Personally I think it would have been better to have your first Geekbox sponsored tourney not be BYOC just cuz I would think you would get more people.

If you can find a venue that doesn't charge $20 for a tournament with prizes and giveaways then please let me know. Oh, yeah, and it must be able to hold over 50 people and accomodate casters and an audience. Sure, an online tournament is an option, but there's nothing like spending a Saturday playing SC2 with like-minded people and eating pizza. Seriously if you can find a venue that has computers and will let you play for a small fee that includes pizza and drinks let me know. I will gladly host my next tournament there. I've spent the last 6 months trying to find such a place.

The only labs I've been in at the U have been in the engineering buildings. Although they may have enough computers, there is no room for spectators nor an area for casting w/o having all the players hear. In addition, the majority of Utah's players live either near the U or BYU. Being that the U favors Salt Lake more than Provo, tournaments up there don't produce as many people. Same goes with Versus down south - most players that attend are from around there. Versus is a nice venue because they have 50 computers and a spectating area - unfortunately though, they charge $20/person.

I'm definitely not opposed to a non-BYOC tournament and I will look into the U computer labs more in depth. Any more places a little more centrally located to balance the commute for both Salt Lake and Utah Counties?

Well Neumont would be fine, but I find it hard to believe that they don't have a computer lab that we could use...? I would just figure a school that does "Game design" would have computers that could play games on them

Sorry I wasn't trying to complain, I was just expressing my concern that there are sponsors and I was worried about the BYOC thing scaring people off. I know I am hesitant to come because my tower is HUGE and I have a 32" monitor so between the two its a giant headache to move.

Oh and I thought I would ask here since I didn't get a response on the blog, but if I'm not able to make it what is the URL for the stream that the casters will be using? It would be nice to watch some games if I can't come.

I agree that BYOC's aren't the greatest, but for now it's the best/cheapest thing we can do. There are quite a few people though that play on laptops, I was surprised at the last Neumont tournament. As far as the stream goes, Tear and Sonde will be broadcasting on justin.tv/tear388

Their computer labs consist of about 5 to 10 computers and that's it and they're in fairly small rooms (definitely not big enough to handle 50+ players and spectators). Their "Game Design" classes are offered like once every two or four years I think. I believe it's mainly a computer programming/technical school and so most of the students have their own laptops.

I still find it hard to believe that a computer school does not have a full lab :\ There is something hugely wrong with that to me.

Oh, thought i'd add this, since I haven't seen it posted here yet, Geex is adding $150 for prize money, plus giving out some of their sweet tshirts

Any complaints about it being a BYOC should be null with that kinda money involved ;D

Yeah, having a huge rig is a pain for BYOC stuff, but there is nothing quite like playing on your own system. I just feel "at home" wherever I am if I'm on my own rig. I feel like I play better, but I could just be crazy.

Well it sounds like they already have 2 casters for this event so I'm guessing they don't need a 3rd. If I understand correctly it looks like you have 3 guys that manage these tourneys for both SLC and Provo? If so do all 3 of you monitor this thread? I just want to offer to help out with casting if you guys ever need it. I know I had read for the Provo tourney that some people weren't happy with the casting so I'd be glad to help the current caster if he needs a co-caster. I won't go over my resume here, but I have a lot of experience and access to a featured teamliquid.net stream.
